Seems like a pretty safe ranking.
Probably the most out-there choice was putting Around the World in a Day above Parade. Parade is honestly one of the most musically daring popular music LPs ever made. ATWIAD is cool, and probably underrated by many. However, I can't say it is as consistent as Parade is, nor is its pallete as complex and singular.
I personally have always been colder on Sign O the Times than most Prince fans. Don't get me wrong, it has some extremely good songs on it, but it has some pretty boring shit too imo.
The other thing that always rubs me the wrong way about the Prince fan consensus that this list exemplifies is the underrating of For You. It is an immaculately performed, composed, and produced album by any measure. The fact that all of that was from the mind of one man, let alone one 19 year old boy, is nothing short of staggering. But ignoring that, the music itself is simply enjoyable. Great album, maybe even more consistent than the self-titled, which has too many ballads for my taste.
Lovesexy is another one that many Prince fans don't give proper credit to. Very unique, but singular sonic quality. It has that feeling of boundless, fearless creativity that my favorite Prince stuff has.
Won't rank them all, but my top 5 would probably be:
>1. 1999
>2. Purple Rain
>3. Dirty Mind
>4. Parade
>5. Lovesexy

Redundant choice of adjectives. My bad.

Prince was more similar to Bowie than MJ, they were just popular at the same time

I think he has a lot in common with both. His control freak side was similar to MJ, while his wide ranging style and ability to inhabit characters was similar to Bowie.

It’s an OK list. I like how jazzy the songs on The Vault are and definitely think it should be ranked higher. Chaos and Disorder and especially Come are way underrated also. Around The World in a Day ranked far too high- it’s become so “underrated” that it’s now overrated. It really was a disappointing follow-up to Purple Rain and pales in comparison to the next two, really three if you love Lovesexy as much as I do, albums that Prince released after it. Graffiti Bridge absolutely sucks and should be ranked a lot lower too. I don’t know what happened there- Prince really hadn’t fallen off too badly yet by ‘90 and the next four albums he released after it were all excellent. I’ve been making my way through his discography again recently, here are my rankings through The Vault:
1. Sign of the Times
2. Purple Rain
3. Parade
4. Dirty Mind
5. The Gold Experience
6. Lovesexy
7. 1999
8. Love Symbol
9. Come
10. Prince
11. Diamond and Pearls
12. Controversy
13. Chaos and Disorder
14. Around the World In a Day
15. Batman
16. The Vault: Old Friends 4 Sale
17. Emancipation
18. For You
19. Crystal Ball/The Truth
20. Black Album
21. Graffiti Bridge
