so my birthday is coming up and i can either buy myself a synth (or electric piano ish) or an eguitar, both the cheap kind under 150$i make electronic music on an ipad and a midi synth would let me record my stuff live for more feels, but a real eguitar also has an irreplaceable beautiful soundive tried both instruments and yes im bad at both, but which would you recommend more? i live in a shithole so i probably dont have the model youll recommend anyway, so i want to hear an opinion
>>130209380Electric piano has added versatility in using it as a midi keyboard (if you don’t already have one), and you can use that to get a slightly more human sounding performance out of vsts. However, unless you’re using samples, programmed guitar, especially rhythm guitar sounds like total shit most of the time. If you want to write your own guitar parts for songs and plan to do it often, then I’d say go with guitar and get maybe a cheap midi keyboard if you don’t have one already. If you are a good pianist and want to show that off in your music, then maybe electric piano.
>>130209506Oops sorry I didn’t see you said you’re bad at both. Then I’d say get the guitar + a super cheap midi keyboard, not like you’d need all 88 keys anyhow.
The keyboard is probably more useful if you're just using it to make music, guitar requires a fucking lot of practice to sound even remotely passable
You'll get much more use for EDM out of something like a keyboard.
>>130209971The electric guitar in this:https://vocaroo.com/1eAMz25o8iI5is just me fooling around with the "Crunchy Guitar" preset on a Yamaha SX7.Heard the song only once before...totally blasted, just improvising, put a bit more chorus on it, nothing more.Advantages are many, insane amount of possibilities.

>>130209380Piano obviously duhAnd you better git gud af dont half ass it, get into classical music and jazz fusion and git gudone helps you come up with beautiful melody the other helps you improv, if you are making edm the former is more important
>>130209971A keyboard is definitely the most useful specifically for EDM genre. But if you don't really play piano/keyboard there isn't much use in spending upwards of $150, a $40 midi keyboard/controller will do the trick just fine. >>130209626My husband (barely) plays guitar, I had a couple days to throw together an instrumental one time and asked him to play the guitar parts....except he barely could so it was recorded at half speed and often one chord or one note at a time, then I edited it all together to make it sound more like someone actually playing lol and it sounded a million times better than the programmed guitar. https://vocaroo.com/1kkmzLF6GiznSo that is to say, with some editing magic you can make it sound like you actually play guitar. And yes I know the track sounds cheesy but I had limited time and I tried to make it to fit what I imagine an edgelord 8 year old boy might like since that's who it was for. I also never made rock music lmao
>>130211396he should get 88 keys and not half ass it. a 40 dollar midi keyboard aint gonna make him get good at all, he can make EDM with it yes but thats very little range and it sucks.88 keys or bust.
>>130211433I mean if he's actually planning on spending the next few years learning how to play keyboard/piano seriously then sure, go for the big one. I would agree being a good keyboard player is better for EDM than being a good guitarist.Personally I only took two semesters of keyboard basics in school, at that level I never felt like I needed more than a midi keyboard for programming. I just play simple stuff on it to give a less robotic feel for programmed parts that otherwise sound stiff. The one I have is 2.5 octaves. My husband whose main instrument is piano, even he uses the midi keyboard for programming the little stuff. When it's a part written for actual piano, like with two hands + wider octave range then he uses his proper electric keyboard. My advice is more from "what do you need to produce music and make it sound good" standpoint, rather than "what do you need to become a good instrumentalist"
>>130211165There's a rich tradition of classical improv.
>>130211609NTA For just playing in a melody, even some cheap 2 octaves midi keyboard is fine most of the time.If you want to seriously get into playing, and especially for playing live, something more serious can feel much better. My Yamaha motif with 76 keys is a workhorse. With my cheaper keyboards there's always that "Be careful, or else you might break it!" thought lingering in the back of my head, with the high end ones....they can take some abuse. And if you manage to break it, it's easy to get parts and repair it.For EDM, Im prefer a lighter synth action, I don't need to pretend that I'm playing a piano with all the mechanic stuff inside, I just want to get the info in as easy as possible.Just some thoughts.
