punk was a reaction against prog music and it was also a way to return rock to being energetic and rebellious like it was in the 50s, i like prog but prog was for upper class poshos and punk was for poor people and returned it to its roots while also revitalizing it for the youth

Most of the formative punk musicians of the mid-70s to early 80s don't even say anything negative about prog, in fact a few even like the genre.The "punk vs prog" war is bullshit made up by music journos in the 70s to help push punk as a brand/its own distinct culture for clueless teenagers to drive up sales. You didn't start to see punk bands openly hate prog until later waves of punk in the mid-late 80s, long after progressive rock kind of died down, and this hatred was just regurgitating music journalists from the late 70s/early 80s.
