No offense to Andre Matos (RIP), but his vocals are so annoying. His vocal tone is so sweet and he does a weird yodel thing every line.

Kinda surprised at these scores. I know Mastodon is a little divisive so I wasn't expecting glowing reviews across the board but I figured the early albums would be sitting in the 80s

I don't take review scores on that site seriously, there's always some holier than thou retard review bombing with a ridiculous score, basically shitting in the pool. Especially that ultraboris retard gave a few 0% reviews to popular albums just because, imo such things should be deleted.
>>
>>130224112
Yeah remember that MA scores are from just those handful of reviews, they're not hundreds of people voting like on RYM or elsewhere. So they're not at all reflective of any community consensus, just the opinion of a dozen people at most.
>>
>>130217265
This album would've been legit total kino if the production was actually good. Andy Johns nearly did it, which would've sounded great, but then they decided against it because of his coke habit. Problem is, Dennis MacKay who got the job was drunk for nearly all the sessions and completely mailed it in. Subsequently you have a piss weak drum sound and Bonnet's vocals are strained because he was singing at the absolute top of his range - a good producer would've brought it down half a step to make his vocals more comfortable.

The second album with Steve Vai has great production and way better vocals thanks to Eddie Kramer but then material isn't neatly as strong as the debut.
>>
>>130227118
i don't really mind the poor production that much. it definitely detracts from the album, but not by a lot and i think the material across the board more than makes up for it.
>and Bonnet's vocals are strained because he was singing at the absolute top of his range - a good producer would've brought it down half a step to make his vocals more comfortable.
this is my only complaint about the album, though. graham is one of my favorite rock singers from the early 80s, but outside of the mid-paced rockers like general hospital, i don't think his performance is all that great. it's serviceable, and he has his moments but i think he's far better on assault attack by MSG.
>>
>>130217544
fun fact, the album after this one was written by david defeis, from virgin steele.

>>130222299
Looks about right to me. Mastodon is pretty pretentious music. Most smarty pants metal albums should be around 7/10 because they don't have catchy melodies.

Not a fan of this
There's a common issue I have with a lot of trad metal, it tries too hard to sound 'epic', but just ends up sounding overly self-indulgent. And I'd barely consider this heavy either, it's just aimless harmonised guitar melodies and not enough impactful riffs

>We're still on 1997? I thought this year was gonna be easy.
i'm pretty surprised as well. 1996 didn't have anywhere near as many albums i liked, but that one went by fairly quickly. this one's just dragging. and it's not for a lack of nominations, either, there's plenty of 1 votes.
>Anyway, I second Savatage and nominate Sacred Steel - Reborn in Steel.
gotcha. by the way, is 90s savatage any good? i've only listened to their 80s stuff, of which the only album i really go back to is mountain king. (though that ep they did as part of the sirens sessions is pretty good, too.)
>>
>>130254305
90s Savatage is a true rollercoaster ride. There's a mediocre album between every good one. Gutter Ballet, Edge of Thorns and Wake of Magellan are the really good ones.

there is some of the classic UFO sound (like on the closing instrumental, change brings a change and house of pain) here, but this is just early 80s heavy metal and rock that got released in 1997 instead of 1982. as for the amount of metal, it's comparable to screaming for vengeance or blackout. plenty of metal, plenty of rock in roughly equal quantity. i'm also going to second this because it's a great album, and honestly better than any of the UFO records i've heard.

Have been listening to Moody/Marsden Whitesnake since I was 14, I have a soft spot for their riffs which should sound heavier (and that is exactly what drove that producer to change their whole image and upgrade their sound) in theory, but somehow fall just short of what Blackmore wrote.
>>
>>130255248
I have to add that I was rocking out to Sweet Talker and Come On however. And Walking In the Shadow of the Blues is a bonafide bang ER.

>>130257712
whitesnake were one of the earlier bands i got into, shortly after deep purple (go figure lol), scorpions and rainbow. come to think of it, i don't recall listening to their '87 S/T until well after i had checked out lovehunter and come an' get it.
>I have a soft spot for their riffs which should sound heavier (and that is exactly what drove that producer to change their whole image and upgrade their sound) in theory, but somehow fall just short of what Blackmore wrote.
fool for your loving is a good example of that. metallic, driving riff, same kind of deal as smoke on the water - but it doesn't have the same power as that song's riff. the chugging in between dave's lines in the chorus are also kind of heavy. mean business off lovehunter also comes to mind. it's so obviously a metal song if you're going by riffs, but it doesn't sound metallic at all. none of the crunch that would've been there if it were recorded by later whitesnake or deep purple.

You know what the real gem of this general is? Besides learning about bands and music, we don't try to sell each other stuff. We are fucking going with our tastes as our only compass in the sea of a music scene, largely commodified. Like a fanzine, online. I remember an ad from Brian Slagel when he launched Metal Blade, where he said that the spirit of 60s rock rebellion lives through the new era of 80s heavy metal, which of course had to be infused with punk. And it was a new sound and it made you stand out, mostly fingers (of scorn) pointing at you, which is a GOOD thing. And it made all the christ freaks condemn heavy metal for the faults of a class society. Now you have 'Tallica selling out arenas within an hour for 400 dollars/euros a pop, Araya turning christian and of course you already had a lot of bands from the 80s just being charmed by the rebellious sound while being conservative.
I am not trying to alienate anyone here, just sharing my thoughts honestly, but heavy metal is the music of the rebellious, bar none. And in here, you can share your tastes and opinions without anybody sensoring them. As it fucking should be.
>>
>>130263005
>Like a fanzine, online.
You're right, this sort of feels like one, just sharing what we like with each other. People here stay on topic unlike the teenage drama that is /metal/. I appreciate what gets posted here a lot, even if I'm not replying to it I'm still checking out most of what gets posted.
>>
>>130263005
That's the worst thing about nowadays internet in general, everything is for fucking profit. Fucking ads, sponsorships, paywalls everywhere. Unlike once where people just shared and talked about stuff just because they genuinely liked it.

Anyone here into Damien Storm? People on RYM and metal-archives seem to really hate this album, but it's fun. Apart from the no budget production values and obvious homage to King Diamond/Mercyful Fate, the real contentious quality here is that the themes and presentation are deliberately kitsch.

I am aware of him because there are photos of Seth Putnam where you can see a Damien Storm sticker on his guitar, though I never got around to listening to it until now. This was meant to be a UFO album but iirc Schenker had partial ownership of the name and wouldn't sign off on Mogg using it.

George Bellas is one of the better latter-day Shrapnel shredders, he's like Yngwie with a bit of jazz thrown in.

apparently there's three members from 60s DP that are still in the band. (gillan, glover and paice, though paice was the only one that played on any of the studio LPs). in fact, the only member from the 60s that's dead is jon lord. the rest are still alive.

Was gonna post this in the main thread but I've seen thrash posted here so I'd rather leave it here

This album has some really nice riffing and excellent production for thrash, but the vocals really tarnish it at some points.
The vocalist is trying to be 'melodic' but he can only hit like 3 different notes. Sometimes it works and he sounds decent, but there's so many moments where it just doesn't. And it doesn't help that he loves holding those notes for so fucking longgggg. It gets fucking annoying lol

This feels like one of those albums with so much potential, it could be a really fantastic album if they had a more competent vocalist. I think if it had somehow come out a few years earlier with a /trad/ vocalist it would be hailed as a masterpiece. Even the album cover looks kinda early-80s

I never had the patience to listen to that album in full. There are some great riffs in there but it really didn't need to be a whole hour long. And I agree about the vocals being monotonous, which is strange because on the previous album he sounded looser and even did some higher pitched screams, then suddenly here he is very restrained.
I guess this was mainly influenced by Metallica after they did AJFA, but a lot of thrash bands in the late 80s decided to slow down a lot and write long ass songs, and I was never a big fan of that. That is going in the opposite direction of what thrash ought to be imo. Thrash metal should be high adrenaline music that makes you literally want to thrash something. Darkness Descends itself was already a perfect example of thrash at its best. Aggression's The Full Treatment is another that comes to mind as an example of a perfect thrash album to me.

Hot take, but I think this album is a bit too inconsistent to be considered a masterpiece. There are songs I would absolutely rate 10/10 on here (Mirror Mirror is pretty much the quintessential power metal song), but then there's a bunch of 6/10 songs and I'm not talking about all the interludes. Songs like Blood Tears, Noldor and The Eldar never did much for me. I think A Night at the Opera has the same problem.

Is /trad/ at all aware of Metal Enterprises? If not, treat yourself:
https://thecorroseum.org/features/metalenterprises/index.php

Started by Ingo Nowotny, Metal Enterprises produced some of the most bizarre, ugly, heinous and thoroughly otherworldly records cut to wax. The first LPs were licensed editions of non-German releases, but overtime, the label released unique LPs. By far, the most infamous releases were what were later called Metalploitation records, where previous signees would allegedly forfeit the rights to their names before Nowotny and his merry band of hired studio musicians recruited by Holger Schmidt would record and release fake follow-ups similar to those shitty Italian horror/sci-fi film sequels. At least three bands were prey to these schemes, including Killer Foxx, Kahlkopf and Thrash Queen. The label also had notorious studio projects like Extreme Napalm Terror that only existed for the label to cash in on Grindcore and Death Metal. I strain to think of a practice too unethical or shameful for Nowotny and friends.

Against the odds, the label intermittently released some unique records worth listening to at least once. For me, the best LP was Think of Misery's Poverty Is No Disgrace:
https://youtu.be/j0atXlctyEs

Pure Teutonic Thrash in the vein of Kreator and Sodom with hints of Sadus or Coroner.
>>
File: ThrashQueenAshestoAshes.jpg (248 KB, 1196x1147)
248 KB JPG
Perhaps the most infamous of their pseudo-sophomores was "Thrash Queen"'s Ashes to Ashes:
https://youtu.be/aaQcCrBwtY0

Opening with a grotesque rendition of Richard Strauss's immortal "Also Sprach Zarathustra", the completely discordant arrangement sets the tone before the album hits you with "Vox of Thrash". The riffs start out with what you could expect from '80s Metal, but then comes the vocalist. This woman shrieks out nigh incomprehensible hebephrenic lyrics that follow no coherent theme and convey no narrative or message. It's like what would happen if an echolalic child recorded an album comprised from movie quotes, but in this case, it's a tone deaf woman trying to imitate opera. The woman's hysterical yelping and thick German accent drive home cheery lyrics like: "VOX OF THRAAASH! LIGHT THE INFERNO! Let's make love in the pool! Let's make love in the refrigerator!" As if that was not enough, the subsequent track "God Save the Queen" features our lovely lady caterwauling, "GOD SHAVE THE QUEEEEEEEEN!" With each proper song running well over 7 minutes in length when the music can only justify 3 at most, you'll be questioning reality before your brain gets sucked into a black hole.

Must be heard to be believed.
>>
File: ThrashQueenManslayer.jpg (203 KB, 1000x1000)
203 KB JPG
The story behind the original Thrash Queen is a rather curious one. Formed in Southern New England around 1984 at the behest of a friend who would later marry (then divorce within a year) the band's guitarist, Thrash Queen would record what is largely regarded as one of the worst Heavy Metal records ever recorded: Manslayer. Featuring simplistic, derivative Speed Metal riffs and tanker bottom-tier productions, the album's statement as being the world's first all-female Thrash band would be entirely lost on the world, but the story doesn't end there.

Across the pond, Metal Enterprises was more than curious about Lanslyde Records's airfare and agreed to release licensed editions of both Killer Foxx and Thrash Queen. According to Lanslyde founder Matthew Brooks, Nowotny apparently did not ask for master tapes which were customary industry practices, leading him to assume he mastered the German edition directly from the vinyl. Considering how shoddy the original LP sounded on account of being recorded on a Studiomaster 4 track with the guitars in turn recorded through a microphone and a 4x12 cab stuffed into the rear of a Toyota (try picturing that in your head), God only knows how the German edition sounded:
https://youtu.be/Ypa9TqK_zvs

Truth be told, I've heard worse. I've listened to my share of shit-ass Metal albums, and after sitting through this track to track, the music itself isn't any worse than some generic Speed Metal band's demo tape, although it doesn't help when your title track is both your worst and opening track. Nonexistent production values aside, even the good tracks are monotonous and repetitive.

Guys, I might have uncovered forbidden knowledge that has thus far eluded discovery.
I do not know what to do with this information, but with minuscule tweaks(example ones below) the lyrics for "The Gambler" goes perfectly with "Whiskey in the Jar".

Sing along.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vnz0p29rym8&list=RDVnz0p29rym8&start_radio=1

On a warm summer's evening
On a train bound for nowhere
I met up with a gambler
We were both too tired for sleeping
So, we took turns a-staring
Out the window at the darkness
'Til boredom overtook us
And he began a’speaking

(chorus doesn't work)

He said "Son, I've made a living
Out of reading people's faces
And knowing what their cards were
By the way they held their gazes
So, if you don't mind my saying
I can see you're out of aces
For a taste of your whiskey
I'll give you some advicin'."
Do with this arcane wisdom as you please.

I was never really big on Metal Church but I stumbled upon this song and I think it's fantastic. I love the clean riffs, I love the dirty riffs, I love how the song alternates between them and gets heavier over time.

I like the song enough to have listened to the rest of the album, which was pretty good, but this song is still my favorite by far.

With all that being said, what the fuck were they thinking when writing the solo? Is it supposed to sound bad? I mean, I guess it kinda fits the song but it still sounds absolutely bizzare to me lol.

Say what you want about this album, but Architect of Pain is great.
>>
Damn, this album is so vastly overrated. I can't believe it was voted the greatest metal album of all time.

Starts out great with "Battery" and "Master of Puppets", yeah, two classic songs, great. Then "The Thing That Should Not Be" comes on and it's not a good song. It's very meandering without making any lasting impression. Then "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)". Great song, one of their best.

Side 2 starts with "Disposable Heroes", a good song, but nothing spectacular. Same with next song "Leper Messiah". Good, but not great. After that the low point of the album, "Orion", an instrumental who completely halts the momentum that is left on the album and it's way too long for what it is. Last song is "Damage Inc." and it picks the record up a bit, but it's still not a great composition.

3 songs are great and classics, 1 stinker song and 4 good songs. Definitely not the greatest metal album of all time.

I can say the same thing about other "greatest albums of all time". Holy Diver is another example. Two or three classic songs, then a bunch of average and forgettable ones. Even the first Black Sabbath album is pretty inconsistent.

>the low point of the album, "Orion",

You could have picked one of the other songs you don't like to call it the low point of the album, but Orion? Orion is the sound of Master of Puppets. It's a brutal and yet melancholic instrumental.

How far Metallica have fallen.
>>
>>130371168
And you are...?
>>
>>130378268
For me Leper Messiah is the low point. Orion is a great song, and actual musicians like guitar players must learn it at some point. Mutards are mostly untalented hacks.
>>
>>130372792
>I can't believe it was voted the greatest metal album of all time
It's because Metallica was many people's first exposure to the genre, so it holds a lot of sentimental value. They're gonna look at it less objectively than other albums
>>130378316
>For me Leper Messiah is the low point
Yeah I'd agree, it's the least interesting song on the album, and funnily enough that's the one Mustaine claims to have written riffs for on this album.

I like Megadeth but the dickriding of Mustaine is ridiculous, saying that Metallica went to shit right after they ran out of Mustaine riffs is just dishonest bullshit, considering the greatest songs they ever wrote like Master of Puppets and Sanitarium didn't use his ideas whatsoever. Sure his contributions to the beginning of the band are undeniable but Metallica very clearly peaked WITHOUT him, no matter how hard mustard stain and his legions of megadickriders try to portray it otherwise

I like Blaze, a good voice (and a nice bloke) albeit completely wrong for Maiden. I genuinely think Harris kneecapped himself by refusing to budge on not having a non-British singer in Maiden.

Blaze and Doogie White were the two final choices, but then a lot of the Euro power metal singers who auditioned, as well as John West, who would've fitted a lot better were never seriously in the running just on the basis they weren't Brits. Though at least with West, the Maiden camp liked him enough to he passed his audition tape on to Cozy Powell, which is why he sings on his final solo album.

No greater opening than E5150/Neon Knights. That solo of Neon Knights? You could be any person in the band during that solo, and you would be cool. Sabbath is a band. Fuck sharon and her mafioso dad.
