Decent French powerprog, worth a go for fans of Symphony X, Royal Hunt or Elegy. Good Coverdale-ish vocals from Pink Cream 69's David Readman and some great guitar playing even if the leads are a bit derivative of Malmsteen in parts.

Why did Queensryche break out into mainstream popularity while these guys struggled? They both started out with a similar power metal sound but I think Queensryche pivoted into more MTV friendly territory whereas Fates Warning remained true to a power metal sound.

80s Queensryche just outright had better songs than period Fates Warning and Crimson Glory

Caught - amazing intro and solo section, neat atmosphere, but a bit repetitive and overlong, 7
Wasted - some of Maiden's best pop metal, classic solo, 9
Sea - underrated song, I enjoy the awkward rough-and-tumble of the verses which I think hurt it for many, and the bridge is sublime, 10
Heaven - terrible vocal melodies but excellent instrumental bridge, 7
Loneliness - one of their most melodic songs and the passion makes the repetition feel deliberate in a good way, 8
Stranger - borders on AOR with another classic Smith solo, 9
Deja Vu - kinda fillery, cool Dave intro but the song itself is too simple even for its already shorter length, 7
Alexander - the actual peak of Maiden's dual leads, 10

Turbo - classic, 9
Locked - excellent, a bit urgent, 8
Private - fun hard rock, 7
Parental - not a fan of "hello fellow kids" songs especially with Halford's weird sneery punk affection going on, 4
Rock - fun pop rock, 6
Out - the equivalent to Maiden's Stranger, cold atmospheric AOR-ish excellence, 9
Wild - fun pop rock, 6
Hot - totally overlooked gem, energetic, pre-chorus bursting with energy the synth effects on the solos sound almost alien, maybe my favorite on the album, 10
Reckless - classic, 9

Tailgunner - weak chorus and the lyrical theme a bit of a rehash, but still memorable and very enjoyable, 8
Holy - goofy but enjoyable, 7
No Prayer - excellent and a little outside the norm, 9
Public - enjoy the rowdiness and aggression, some amazing melodies from Dave, 9
Fates - one of their weirder songs that people don't seem to recognize, and Janick's solo is sublime albeit brief, 9
Assassin - goofy but underrated, one of their more musically involved songs, could have fit in a King Diamond album, 8
Run - has potential but a bit disjointed with some strained vocal melodies, 6
Hooks - guilty pleasure, always loved this, 9
Bring - trashy but catchy, 7
Mother - not a "true" epic but riffs and shreds, 10

SiT is the clear winner, but all three are great

I see Death Metal fests all the time which I would love to attend (I feel like shit having just missed Maryland Death Fest again) but I barely ever see Doom Fests advertised at all in the USA. substantially better than their 1976 debut. there's still a few lesser songs but the highlights (doomsday, on wings of love, mother nature's pride) are worth it. this record's also consistently heavier, too. on wings of love has riffing like a classic rainbow song and doomsday sounds like something off sad wings or sin after sin.

this was a giant pain in the ass to find a download of that was both complete and in good quality. murasaki are a better and heavier band live, even if the vocalist is still subpar and some of these songs aren't that noteworthy. with that being said, there's a lot of cool stuff here. wrath of the gods, black out, double dealing woman, and doomsday are all great songs; and doomsday and double dealing woman have a punch that the studio versions just don't have. black out's main riff in particular is very heavy for 1977, similar to steamrock fever by scorpions.

from 1977-1981? no, but not a lot passes them. fire down under is one of the very few albums that even though i don't consider it truly perfect (i give it a 98/100) i still group it in with my all-time favorites. because really, outside of no lies, a still pretty good song; the album IS that fucking solid. the band struck fucking GOLD on that album, and i know guy left riot 'cause of religious reasons, but if he had just stuck around for just one more fucking record, the band could've potentially been as popular as priest. they had the chops, they had the commercial and heavy crossover that drove albums in the early 80s, and they had the songs.

Its the chorus for sure. Thats probably the only 1st song of an album that hasnt been used for its album tour and never ever used by the band for anything. They know it's bad. That album should have opened with the title song. The intro is great for it and the scream introduces Dickinson perfectly.
Or an entire other opener type song should have been written.

I think the later albums had more of a problem with songs blending together. Armor of Light was pretty much nothing but fast songs, and while I do like fast songs, please mix it up a little. You're just as good at slower songs.

i just find much of seventh son merely decent and nothing more. at worst (can i play with madness?) it's irritating. i also remember thinking the title track went on way too long, and the repeating chorus was kind of lame; but other than that i don't have much to say about the album. it's just sort of... there.

Moonchild is REALLY good. It immediately caught me on first listen.

The Prophecy is one of their greatest songs.
Gun to my head, it's actually my favourite off of 7th son.
It always bemused me that it's often highlighted as a weak link, especially factoring in the album's conceptual ambitions, and seeing as the lyrics really strongly resonate with 7th son's overall thematic identity.
Even aside from the acoustic outro, the song has one of the more unique classical-inspired melodic approaches in the bands repertoire with a thunderous driving rhythm and desperate operatic vocal performance, and it's a shame they've never played it live. Bruce probably couldn't belt out the almost tormented, howling vocals like he did on the album, especially with the pre-chorus panning vocals, and the (what I presume is a) very dramatic key modulation leading into the chorus, but it'd be great to see.
Strictly talking about 7th son, I think the album's weakest tracks are actually The Evil That Men Do and Only the Good Die Young, despite the former's popularity. Maybe they fit into the vague storyline approach that loosely functioned as the album's connective tissue, but I always thought The Evil's pre-chorus repetition was low-effort and lame, and the overall function of the lyrics served the aborted attempt at the storytelling rather than emphasising the general themes of psychic transcendent abilities and future sight etc. I get why the track is popular, but it's also clearly the default attempt at making a Run To The Hills/The Trooper style galloping huge chorus hit and feels untethered to the rest of the songs. I also reckon the album would have worked better if the titular track was the climax at the end, rather than Only the Good, which is both too similar in structure/pace to the preceding track (The Clairvoyant) and just not as interesting as it as well.

I don't understand people who say they don't like Iron Maiden album x or y. They all sound almost the same. They have the same style, and it's better than many other bands, especially the other nwobhm bands. I was listening to No Prayer for the Dying, a "hated" album, and it was actually pretty good - if you like Killers why wouldn't you like this? Now I'm listening to the song The Book of Souls and it's also good. If you like Powerslave why wouldn't you like this? Musically it's basically the same.

This: >>130454522 >>130457339

The chorus has that weird major scale riff that just sounds goofy and childish. The rest of the track, while somewhat upbeat, still has lots of energy and is actually quite good and catchy.

The song has grown on me over time btw and is one of my favorites on the album.

Because of the bloat. Your Book of Souls to Powerslave comparison - book is over 10 minutes, slave is 6 or so. In the particular case of Book of Souls song, Id say it's length is justified, because it uses its time to paint a picture and tell a story, plus uses the standard Harris formula of intro > build-up > pay-off >outro.
But the last 3 Maiden albums each have several very long songs that just have no reason to be as long as they are. There's so much fat on Senjutsu and Book of Souls that makes them drag needlessly. That's really the reason people have been turned off from the newer albums. Unjustified song length and repetitiveness.
That and both the last 2 sound horrible in production. It's mind-blowing how good Powerslave, Somewhere and 7thson sound compared to Book, Senjutsu and even FF, and those 3 were recorded some 35 years ago.
I give big kudos to Harris for sticking to his own stubborn vision and not caring what anyone would think, certainly knowing that the reviews and sales wont be as big as for the older albums, and just pushing through, but songs like Lost in a Lost World and Shadows of the Valley are just a pain to get through.
>No prayer
I dont really hate it, it's a fresh one, more Rock n Roll and simpler. I think that's the reason its panned, its just stripped down, basic Maiden.
No synths, no epic historic themes, no prog elements, maybe besides MRussia, no live production, from stage outfits to jeans and leather jackets. And no Adrian to be an autistic perfectionist when it comes to sound and tone. It sounds raw and more aggressive, which isnt bad, but if only it had stronger written songs. Fear is literally NoPrayer.2, just has a bit of a better sound and the songs are just better written and structured.
The Assassin, Public Enemy, Tailgunner, Hooks in you, No Prayer, Fates Warning are cool though. Just not that amazing or memorable.

much of savage amusement is on the wussier, more commercial side but there's still some heavy in there. honestly, i find the commercialism of that record kind of overstated. it reeks of hairspray and aquanet like pretty much every other rock album from 1988, but sonically it's the logical followup to love at first sting.

This can only be because the first two albums are punchier, faster, shorter, had a punky singer and shitty, punk-like sound quality.
Harris himself has said many times over that he dislikes punk and doesnt consider Maiden as punk whatsoever, other than acknowledging Dianno was a punky-sounding singer.
Soon as Dianno was out, Maiden went full on opera with distortion.
The reason those people you mentioned are characterizing Maiden as punklike is because they're the cool edgelords that only acknowledge the first 2 records

Thoughts on Crimson Glory's sellout album? It gets shit on pretty consistently but I think there's some decent stuff in there. Good production and performances - Midnight sounds really good on the more commercial stuff. It's not quite hair metal but not too far off - very Zeppelinish in places but also not really like the MTV Zeppelin clones like Kingdom Come and Bonham. I've also read people comparing it to Badlands I don't agree with that at all, even the fairly minor prog leanings they retain make them sound different.

The lazy title/chorus-lyric repetition was already noticeable on some of their earlier classic tracks like Children of the Damned, Heaven Can Wait, Caught Somewhere In Time (which at least had the grace to change a single line in the climactic chorus), and 7th son, but by the reunion-era, it had become sort of a trademark that at least 2-3 songs on the album would feature Bruce just pointlessly bellowing out the title over and over again during the chorus. Shit like Brave New World, No More Lies, For the Greater Good of God, Satellite 15... The Final Frontier etc. are just inexcusable.
It's annoying because many of these songs are actually among their best, and you get the sense if they maybe included a lyrical counterpoint or anything it'd make them that much better.
I think Out of the Silent Planet probably has the single most instances of the title being used in the lyrics.
>>
>>130497364

Which is the best track off of Powerslave? For me, it's the eponymously-named title track, Powerslave.
>>
>>130498679
Powerslave>Rime>2M2M>Aces>Duellists>Flash>Village>Losfer
Very tough choice between the top 2 though. Powerslave actually took me ages to get into because initially it came off like some gimmick circus-ride Egyptian tune with an unconventional chorus. The instrumental middle section adds a great unspoken pathos to the malicious grandeur and arrogance of Bruce's little tale.
>>
>>130499039
It is not a tough choice between Slave and Rime: since the latter is 20 minutes long, it will lose every time no matter how equal it is to the former. It is the Egyptian riffs that make Slave so outstanding, though they may have copied the idea from Mercyful Fate.

I guess it's kind of a 'black sheep' in their discography considering its the only one without Schmier (not counting those late 90s albums which the band themselves disowned lol). But I really like the vocalist Andre on this one, maybe even more than Schmier, he sounds like a more manic, crazed version of him which matches the vibe this album is going for perfectly.

Also the riffs and solos are really unique. Like I've heard a lot of thrash metal but this one always stands out to me. This and 'Release from Agony' was the peak of the band, I honestly prefer them over the early stuff (Sentence/Infernal/Eternal).

How I interpret it is that the lyrics are from the point of view of the city of Berlin itself, witnessing the violence happening within it. The line "hooks to my brain are well in" is referring to the wall.
>>
>>130521301
Absolutely pointless re-recording. If they did the first two albums, it would have been more interesting. Those songs always sounded more powerful live.

I read in an interview that Halford came up with that line while touring in West-Berlin and standing at the city's river, looking into East-Berlin which he said looked dark and empty, while West-Berlin was lively.
I don't think it means much of anything other than that Berlin is grungy and rough which makes the lyric sound badass.

I cannot think of a single post 60s album that is improved by having a random cover song on it. It almost always ruins the flow of the album too because the style of the song that is being covered is usually very different from the album's originals.
Worst is Death's Painkiller though imo.

I have always loved this cover. Though the album doesn't sound nearly as mean as it looks (maybe that's what they meant with the title...) it does have some nice rockers in there

Listening through this for the first time. Excellent vocals though very different to Midnight, Wade Black sounds extremely similar to Ripper Owens. Songs are generally good though a few dodgy attempts at sounding modern. Fucking terrible use of a drum machine though, I don't know if was due to budget limitations or what but it's extremely distracting.

Apparently they were planning on rerecording the album with Midnight before he drank himself to death.

Yeah that one is painful to listen to

I'm not a fan of TSOP at all either, it's definitely my least favourite Death album. I mean it's not even meant to be a Death album, it was initially for Control Denied and forced to change name by record label bs. It has some cool riffs but the songwriting is a mess, Chuck was trying too hard to sound 'progressive'
>>
>>130530908
>Chuck was trying too hard to sound 'progressive'
It does sound like that a bit and I think he was still figuring out the sound he wanted. Control Denied was an improvement on TSOP and I think that if he had been able to do a second album he would have improved that sound even further.

Shill me some Anthem, I know they're big in Japan but the only thing I have of theirs is that album with Graham Bonnet that I, as I understand it, is basically a Greatest Hits re-recorded in English. Plus that album of Castlevania covers the bass player did.

This album is so goddamn well produced. The crisp, John Bonham-esque snare is probably one of my absolute favorite drum sounds and the guitars sound so goddamn crunchy. Feels like Saxon's later material actually got worse production-wise.

This album starts of so well with 'Bloodbath', an awesome song that could absolutely belong on the first 2 albums. If they had kept that same quality it could've been one of the best OG-lineup comeback albums ever.

Unfortunately the rest of the songs range from mildly entertaining to straight up boring...real missed opportunity

There seems to be a general consensus that Black Sabbath is THE perfect metal album, but I always thought it was inconsistent. Their next three albums are all better, as is In Rock.
>>
>>130554468
i don't get that at all. because i've listened to their debut plenty of times, and every single time that i do i don't leave it thinking "oh, that was a masterpiece! one for the ages." i think "wow, that first half was fantastic!" and forget about the entirety of side B besides that kind of cool, swinging riff in the warning like 7 minutes in and the beginning of sleeping village.
>Their next three albums are all better, as is In Rock.
i actually think that vol. 4 is on a similar playing field to the debut. plenty of hits, but there's a few songs i just don't care for.
