"Eddie was a sad sight by '95. He would shamble around in an old trenchcoat while drinking cheap shiraz straight from the bottle. It turned his teeth black. I said to him 'Don't you want a glass for that?' He tapped the side of the bottle and replied 'It's in a glass.'"
>>
>>130224168
>unironically believes he fucked an alien
yeah i'll take eddie's side in this fight, sweatie
>>
>>130224168
supposedly eddie was more coked out during the recording of VH3 than ANY of the other old 70s/80s albums. that's kinda crazy if you actually think about it.
>>
>>130227805
Bowie and Elton were 5x more coked up in the 80s than on any of their prime 70s albums too.
>>
>>130224168
Eddie was rock n roll, drunk and chain smoking cigs and snorting meth. Eddie made millions of dollars for untalented hacks like Roth and Hagar so they could be egotistical primadonnas.
>>
>>130227826
Sammy was an established industry pro for a decade before Van Halen so I don't think he needed them to "make it."
>>
>>130227908
He was a washed out has been that made forgettable songs like I Can't Drive 55. Sammy's solo material isn't played anywhere anymore because it was not good.
>>
>>130224168
p. sure Malcolm Young turned him on to shiraz. must be bad for you given that neither exactly lived to life expectancy.

Imagine sucking so bad your replacement is fucking Gary Cherone.
>>
>>130228601
That's not exactly how it went. Van Halen III is basically a Eddie Van Halen solo album. He just needed a vocalist. It shouldn't actually count to the Van Halen discography.
>>
>>130228238
Eddie was Aussie? Makes sense.
>>
>>130228601
Eddie wanted a totally compliant frontman who would just execute his orders without question.
>>
Eddie jammed with Limp Bizkit but he didnt like them so he got out of there. then he returned all coked out in a tank and with a shotgun and demanded for his gear back
>>
>>130227825
Bowie was most coked out during Station To Station. pure psychosis.
>>
>>130224168
Eddie was complete trash. He died in pain. It was a good thing.

eh VHIII was a trainwreck because Eddie's coked-out ego couldn't work with a good producer (shit even Templeman would've been better than Fairbairn).

But Gary Cherone was a great singer for Van Halen. They were great live w/ him singing.

src: me, I saw them in 98, it was the last good Van Halen tour. 04 was an appalling trainwreck and the DLR "reunion" shows (sans Michael Anthony) were a joyless cash grab.

but man, there's no need to pick on Gary. He was put in an impossible situation and did very well under the circumstances.
>>
>>130231996
the tour was great but the album...no, just no, ok?

*Mike Post, not Fairbairn.

The fucking Hill Street Blues guy, and people wonder why VHIII is so cringeworthy.

based and absolutely correct. The thing about Sammy Hagar that people don't get is that he was playing arenas w/ virtually no airplay, long before I Can't Drive 55 and One Way to Rock. And he still plays large venues while getting no airplay. He's kinda like Phish or countless other bands that DGAF if the mainstream likes them or not. You want "organic" success? that's it, in a nutshell. People come to your shows because they like your music, simple as. No ram-it-down-your-throat radio and Spurtify marketing, just good music.

>>130227931
>forgettable songs
>I can't drive 55
everyone with anything remotely resembling a pulse for rock music knows I Can't Drive 55.
You sound kind of insecure there anon. Maybe try to cry harder about Sammy.

>Sammy's solo material isn't played anywhere anymore because it was not good.
Radio play != "good", per my above comment.
Also, you still hear big Sammy hits all the time out and about (sporting events/etc). So I'm not really sure what kind of cope you're engaged in right now.

Are you trying to cancel Sammy because he's MAGA trash?

correct, they wanted to make him look not nearly as old as he was

>It was 2006. I had been waiting at 5150 studios for more than an hour when Eddie finally showed up. I hadn't seen him in a decade. He looked like he hadn't bathed in a week. He certainly hadn't changed his clothes in at least that long. He wasn't wearing a shirt. He had a giant overcoat and army pants, tattered and ripped at the cuffs, held up with a piece of rope. I'd never seen him so skinny in my life. He was missing a number of teeth and the ones he had left were black. His boots were so worn out he had gaffer's tape wrapped around them, and his big toe stuck out. He walked up to me, hunched over like a little old man, a cigarette in his mouth. He had a third of his tongue removed because of cancer and he spoke with a slight lisp.

>He may have lost a chunk of his tongue to cancer, but he was still smoking cigarettes. He claimed the cancer came from putting the guitar pick in his mouth while he used his fingers to play. He was living with a pathologist, who kept taking slices off his tongue, to check for cancer. He beat the cancer. He told me he cured himself by having pieces of his tongue liquefied and injected into his body. He also told me when he had his hip replacement, he stayed awake through the operation and helped the doctors drill the hole. What a fruitcake.

Wait the guy's almost 80? Does tequila preserve you or something?
>>
>>130232153
in all that it's surprising that Eddie even lived to as old as 65
>>
>>130232151
This whole obsession with rockers having to be paragons of virtue is so bizarre. Were Little Richard, Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis expected to be heckin' wholesome? I partially blame Dave Grohl and even he turned out to be a hypcrite, almost like people are human beings or something?
>>
>>130232166
>Does tequila preserve you or something?
I hope so. It's my only chance.

Sammy's Cabo Wabo tequilla is actually quite good, better than Patron or even Don J

I wish he made a Cabo Wabo Mezcal, I would drink it right up.

>We brought in producer Glen Ballard, who made Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill, a total pro who really tried to make things happen. We had [new songs] ready within one week. It took three months for Ed to do the guitar parts to three songs and a couple of solos. The Eddie Van Halen I first met could have done that in an hour. When they finally laid down the rhythm-guitar tracks, that was all I needed to sing. I didn't need his guitar solos. As soon as they got that, I went in and knocked out my vocals on all three songs in two hours. Mike came in and we did all the backgrounds in another two hours. Eddie was still asleep. By the time he came down, we were finished. They spent the next three months doing Eddie's guitars.

>Our new manager, Irving Azoff, agreed to hold an intervention with Eddie. He brought a big, beefy security guard and met Al and me at 5150. Eddie walked in, carrying his wine bottle. Irving did all the talking. He told Eddie the [2004] tour was going to be difficult, that he needed to go away for a week or two, that we could postpone some dates if we needed. We all agreed Eddie needed to clean up.

>He smashed the bottle. "Fuck you," he said. "I will kill the first motherfucker that tries to take this bottle away from me. I left my family for this shit. You think I'm going to fucking do this for you guys?"
>>
>>130232199
how was Dave Grohl a hypcrite[sic]?
>>
>From the start of the tour, Eddie made some terrible mistakes and it seemed like he couldn't remember the songs. He would just hit the whammy bar and go wheedle-wheedle-whee.

>Whenever he came out with no shirt and his hair tied up samurai-style, he seemed fucked up. That was his little signal. I don't know what it was. He would come out first with his hair down, go back to change guitars, or after Al's drum solo, and come back with his hair up and shirt off. I'd look at Mike and we'd roll our eyes — here we go.

>One time, we got on a plane after a show and he spent practically the whole flight in the bathroom. When he finally came out, he had this hairbrush, the kind with the fur bristles, twisted up in his hair, hanging down. He was soaking wet, covered in water, like he tried to take a bath in the airplane sink. He flopped down on the floor, fussing with the brush caught in his hair, and never went back to his seat, landed that way. Hospital-crazy.

>After one show, Mike and I stayed back, like we normally did, and showered. Ed didn't shower. He jumped into the limo right off the stage and went straight to the airplane. When Mike and I rolled up, laughing, joking, eating a couple of barbecue sandwiches we had ordered, Eddie was sitting there drinking his wine out of the bottle. He went off on us. "Don't ever fucking make me wait," he said. "Without me, you're nothing. You need me. You'll see. At the end of this tour, you guys will have nothing. You're going to have to call me if you ever want to tour again."
>>
>>130232222
quads of truth checked

If Eddie's ego had let Glen Ballard produce VH III it would have been absolutely killer record. You could tell just from "Me Wise Magic" that GB would've been just the guy for the Cherone era.
>>
>>130232199
it's not "bizarre" it's just that the culture shifted to Millenials who have the approximate morals of a 50 year old church secretary in Nebraska
>>
>Once in a while, I'd go over to his dressing room before the show and see how he was, and the times I did that it was usually great. He'd start playing, I'd start singing, jamming around, like old times. Other times, he'd start telling me crazy shit, like, "I pulled my own tooth — this thing was bugging me so I got a pair of pliers and pulled it out."

>I didn't think he could make it. I kept thinking each week would be the last. He was going to land in the hospital. He collapsed a couple of times. He told us one time that he had been hit by a car. He was lying down, and he was so fucked up, he couldn't get up. "I got hit by a car," he said. "You guys don't understand."

>His solo turned into a disaster. It used to be the highlight of every show. Now he would play nothing, just garbage. He would try to play "Eruption," one of his greatest pieces, and screw it up. He would just grab the whammy bar, hit the sustainer, and start making all this noise. The audience wasn't buying it, either.

>I didn't go near him onstage. No more Jimmy Page and Robert Plant. If he's over there, I'm over here. When he comes over here, I'm going over there. No bad vibes, just no vibes. It seemed to me that Ed was going through the motions, like he didn't care about his playing. He didn't care about the way he looked. He just went out there and took the money. He was embarrassing. Al, Mike and I did it from the heart. We played our asses off every night. Ed went out there and jerked off.

>Irving took me aside. "When this show's over," he told me, "I'm getting you in a limo, and we're getting out of here." My plane was waiting to take me home. It was the worst show we'd ever done in our lives. Eddie played so bad. He smashed his favorite guitar to pieces. Sprayed shrapnel into the crowd. He got on the microphone, crying. "You don't understand," he said. "You people pay my rent. I love you people."

>He spent years being the "nice guy of rock" and then got exposed as cheating on his wife with a fat trollop.
just go ahead and re-read that and consider that maybe your assessment of Dave is motivated by something other than "dude cheated on his wife"

also, he never said he was a "nice guy", just lots of folks he interacted with were like "the guy's great". So yeah him fucking up and cheating on his wife doesn't really make him a hypocrite, and it doesn't make stooges/fools out of any of the people whose lives were positively impacted by their interactions with him.

be honest: if Dave was MAGA trash you wouldn't be saying shit about his infidelity.
