Is there any band that managed to sound like 1979? Even on one song? I feel like this song was generational defining and no one managed to live up to it. Makes me sad and nostalgic all the same
>>130231994this song is kind a ripoffhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ossEKyxfQR0
>>130231994also perfect is the official "sequel"
>>130231994https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-mxBDuRaZ8
>>130231994>I feel like this song was generational definingIt wasn't even that big of a deal when it came out. SP were always the band that girls mostly listened to.
>>130232208why does the guy sound like a girl
probably the best music video of all time
New Radicals - Maybe You've Been Brainwashed too
>>130232256How would you know that zoomie?
Zeitgeist [Martha's Music, 2007] *dud*
1979 is a song about nostalgia, it reminds me of the song life in a northern town
>>130232104There's a difference in tone. This one is mundane.1979 is sublime. They deliberately made a different song than 1979 would be. So Billy deserves his props.
>>130231994always found another sister song would be1995 by Radio Depthttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHfqC3LG9LMdifferent years, same nostalgia vibe
>>130232208this stays low to the ground whereas 1979 reaches deep into a cosmic scalenot in the same league
>>130234645let's be real: 1979 is disjointed, juvenile, nonsensical, and distinctly low-effortit's aptitude is a product less of intrinsic quality and moreso resonance with audience imagination
>>130234645...............this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4aeETEoNfOgwhat
>>130238371*its
>>130232256I was there, this is true. Sure, it got played a lot back then but everybody with any kind of real taste in music knew it was just 'meh'. It was mostly normie shitstains who dug it, same with 'Tonight Tonight'. They weren't the worst shit on the radio and MTV back then but they weren't the best either. I'd put SP above garbage like Green Day but below better popular mid 90's alternative music like Tori Amos, Nine Inch Nails, or PJ Harvey.
>>130238489this isn't about Smashing Pumpkins, this is about 19 frickin 79
>>130231994>I feel like this song was generational defining and no one managed to live up to iti've always gotten the sense that most of the smashing pumpkins threads are started by billy himself and this statement confirms it
>>130238489Nirvana is another band like this. Cobain has achieved legendary status over the decades because of his suicide, but at the time they were just one of many alternative rock bands that got popular in the early 90's. Sure they were good, but back then Nirvana was no where near as big of a deal as people make them out to be today.
>>130231994>1979why do zoomers love this song so much?
>>130241542Millennials don't really get rock
>>130241528Desu Nirvana was genuinely getting huge as fuck basically right when Kurt killed himself. It's a big reason why his suicide ended up immortalizing their fame. Their rise from like the very end of 1993 through early 1994 was genuinely meteoric, it's their fame from before then that gets retroactively blown out of proportion.
>>130238489>'Tonight Tonight'lol the thing i remember about that song is i was making microwave burritos in the kitchen and my little sister was watching sabrina the teenage witch in the living room and they started playing tonight tonight in the middle of the show. i was like damn i knew it was lame but i didn't know it was that lame
"remember when" is the lowest form of conversation
