I think French hip hop is huge right now. Electronic music is fairly popular there too. In the underground, France has a strong history of screamo, one standout band being Daïtro. France is actually starting to become one of the most famous bands in black metal thanks to bands like Seth, Alcest, and Blut Aus Nord. I also have to point out they have one of the most successful extreme metal bands ever, Gojira. 60s French Pop artists like Serge Gainsbourg and Françoise Hardy are very popular with hipsters and record collectors. Edith Piaf is also pretty much the defining artist of WW2.

Overrated festival though, when I was there it was probably the last soulful year but people complain more and more about both the "Disneyfication" of it and the line-ups that get less and less impresive.
