I do not get the hype for specific ambient artists. I understand the appeal of ambient music, I just can't understand why, for example, Grouper is considered "good ambient". I've listened to all of her main albums, it just sounds like, formless, I personally find her music more annoying / distracting if anything. I thought good ambient was supposed to be music you could ignore, something basically unnoticable unless you pay strict attention? Genuine question, not trying to troll.

why would anything good be something worth ignoring? i don't understand your definition of worthwhile ambient

Sorry, that's kind of exactly what I'm asking - why is her music so critically acclaimed? Is there some sort of context for it outside of the music, do I have to listen to it through expensive equipment to experience the soundscape? I don't really get why some ambient artists are considered extraordinary, what is there to find?

I don’t really consider Gooper to be ambient. She's like supersketchy acoustic folk rock or singer songwriter. Lyrics kind of preclude the possibility of something being ambient imo.

To me, ambient is mood music. In Grouper's case, I can only really listen to her in Autumn/Winter. I get from her themes of isolation, contemplation, nature, spiritualism, the occult, melancholy, etc. Her whole aesthetic, sound and image-wise contributes to this. She also has some great melodies once in a while. Plus you have the technical aspect, which in ambient's case is more related to sound design. One thing is slushwave where you just slow down the shit out of a track and call it a day, the other is where you compose with synths, textures, pedals and such. Grouper is fairly skilled in taking these organic, fuzzy textures out of a guitar. She has stuff which is more ambient, stuff that is more songwritter-y and stuff somewhere in between. It gives you more flexibility according to the level of attention you want to spend.

Thank you for the in-depth response! I'm not one to really feel deep attachment to "mood music" so to speak, I'm not sure why, and it's difficult to find anyone explaining in concrete terms what they find compelling about, well again, Grouper specifically. That's kind of why I always found her relative (emphasis on relative) fame a bit perplexing. Take care, anon.

I disagree with y’all, dragging a dead deer is summer night music and she uses simple pop melodies and chords that sound lovely

dude picture yourself camping in a lush forest in summer at 5am and then putting on Heavy Water or Headache. Peak existence
