In Utero was originally supposed to end with the song Sappy after All Apologies. I think it would have been better with the tone of the album to end on that bitter note but I also think All Apologies is too good of a final song to mess that up.
>>130305333If Sappy was in the tracklist, I think the album would have sold better.Old Age too.But the band was too stubborn in their wish to destroy their fame, but somehow secretely hoping they'd still be famous for doing it.
>>130305355I don’t really agree. He would record and workshop songs for years and I think he wasn’t ever really happy with how Sappy sounded and gave up putting on the No Alternative aids album. And Old Age I think he wrote for Courtney.
>>130305355>>130305375But I recall Steve Albini saying that he was confused as to why they didn’t put Sappy on the album because he liked it a lot.
>>130305375He probably disliked the basic-bitch solo and was hoping to get more inspired and come up with something more special like on Drain you
>>130305391It’s probably the most technical solo he ever played. I think he was just running out of songs in his pocket and wanted to save it for another album and then just knew he was going to blow his brains out and stopped caring. Some songs on in utero had been demoed like before nevermind I think
>>130305391>>130305416In bloom probably has the best solo he did even though it’s like 15 seconds long. But that’s like the most musically impressive song the band ever did. It uses all 12 notes, it’s constantly effortlessly changing keys, great harmony on the vocals.
>>130305375He didn't want to release Sappy on In Utero because it sounded too much like a Nevermind song.It was written back in the 1988 period when he was trying to come up with Beatlesy melodies dressed in metal riffs. That's when he wrote Polly, About a girl then next year Been a son, Stain. it's part of that melodic streak that was mostly kept out of Bleach
>>130305428Yeah the In Bloom solo is goatIt's like a grunge guy impersonating Van Halen, making it sound both retarded and interesting at the same timeIt's a mockery but it's very smartly done
>>130305430It’s way too depressing and bleak for nevermind. I feel like people say the sound studios version is better but I disagree so hard. It was like the first song he wrote that sounded like an in utero song even though it’s really catchy. And the albini produced version would have fit perfectly on In Utero in my opinion.
>>130305464I could see Sappy played in the unplugged show. It doesn't need much screaming or rely too much on overdriveBut that show already had too many moody songs, they really needed to play something more upbeatJust saying that Sappy seems like one of those versatile songs that you could do in many ways because it's singer-songwriter stuff basically. You could do a campfire version too
>>130305499Plus nobody knew about it unless they bought the No Alternative album and it was a hidden track on it. It became way more popular through the Montage of Heck soundtrack with the really depressing original demo. Which I don’t think is really as good as the later electric versions
>>130305464Yea Nevermind is mostly full of energetic uptempo songs (except for the 'ballad' Polly or the ambient rock piece Something in the way)
>>130305440Yeah totally. And the song itself I think is misunderstood. The lyrics in the chorus are about how unhinged the lyrics in the verses are. And how people don’t pay attention. Not about new fans when they got popular, this was a bleach era song that got rerecorded. The verses are saying let’s sell our kids to people, we could always make more.
>>130305555and all the songs that sound super 80s new wave like come as you are
>>130305555Polly is the absolute worst track on the album.
Dumb feels out of place, honestly. An underground noise rock-style record doesn't need some soft song.
>>130305911You're pretending In Utero has any underlying coherence at all other than Kurt intentionally attempting to disappoint people.
>>130305911The seafoam album had too many noisy tracks. I think he was in two minds about this album: on one hand it was a fuckyou gesture to the label/wife/media/world/fame on the other he still wanted it to get good airplay, especially those softer tracks and the HSB hit, that's why he agreed to have them remixed to a more normie-friendly sound. After all, he had some houses and family to leave a fund to.
awesome thread. Just listened to the Albini mixes of HSB and All Apologies. Was like listening to these songs for the first time again
