Was this the last time a rock song was culturally definitive? I don't just mean the last time a rock song was popular, obviously there have been popular rock songs since. I mean a song that broke out, crossed all the way over to the mainstream, and defined the cultural moment to this degree.

Yes, Welcome To the Black Parade was a swan song for rock, it's final innovation/goodbye, with MCR being the culmination of rock, the highest point in it's long evolution hystory.
For that reason, I maintain that, not only was MCR the best rock band formed in the 21st century, but likely the best ever, period.
