sonic youth are just a bunch of massive pricks and a girl. Those guys are so fucking full of themselves, they are just a bunch of assholes, that play the shittiest music of the 90s. They were the worst band of that period.

Never said to listen to their 90s material

>As melodic, but not as hard/rocking:
The Replacements - Tim
>As rocking, but less overtly masculine, more androgynous
MBV - Isn't Anything

But really, nothing else quite sounds like Bleach. Very unique, interesting album.

Just go through Sub Pop's releases from the mid 80s to 1990

Melvins and Mudhoney have already been recommended, and you can't really go wrong with anything those two released in the 80s. SWANS' Filth was recommended, but for my money I think Cop might be the better fit for you (also compare Paper Cuts to SWANS' Your Property off that album). If you dig the crazier Incesticide material recorded before and during the Bleach period, try Scratch Acid. And the 80s punk band Fang's Landshark record has Bleach's grungy feel (plus Nirvana covered their song The Money Will Roll Right In). It's a bit hard to tell if you'd like them or not, but try Flipper's two 80s studio albums. Flipper's song Sacrifice was a favorite among the band, and they loved Flipper's Album Generic--the guitar's all over the place and the bass is grungy and thick throughout. And try The Cows' Effete And Impudent Snobs, which is a great plodding bass heavy grunge album.

Isn't Anything is a solid rec, same with the EPs You Made Me Realize and Feed Me With Your Kiss which mine the same territory.

Listen to Unwound.
