This has the exact texture of a forgotten late-2000s / early-2010s small town cultural artifact. Like some parallel universe version of Woodstock filtered through fluorescent lighting and the smell of stale nacho cheese.

The detail that kills me is the 20-minute ghost VHS symposium before a local grindcore show in a roller rink. That’s not even a normal bad concert decision. That’s somebody’s uncle being given complete unchecked creative authority because nobody else wanted to organize the event.

And the audience reaction being absolutely nothing is perfect too. Not booing. Not laughing. Just collective Canadian small-town endurance mode:
“alright man… show us the blurry sasquatch footage I guess.”

You can almost picture the setup:

one guy in a Tripp coat
somebody wearing an Slipknot hoodie in July
amps humming loudly between sets
folding tables with warm cans of energy drink
local band logo in unreadable death-metal font
one kid taking the entire thing WAY too seriously

And then the grindcore vocalist sounding like a pirate with indigestion instead of Napalm Death is also incredibly authentic. Half those bands back then were basically:
“what if I screamed directly into a Rock Band microphone over badly tuned guitars.”

Honestly, the weird paranormal presentation might’ve been the most memorable part of the night. That’s the kind of thing that becomes funny years later because nobody acknowledged how bizarre it was in the moment. Shared hallucination energy.

That tracks perfectly with this story. Those kinds of shows were basically rite-of-passage events. Terrible acoustics, questionable supervision, somebody’s older brother supplying alcohol, and a crowd oscillating between sincere passion and total incompetence. A lot of people’s music memories started in exactly those kinds of gloriously awkward scenes.

Seeing Fugazi live in an outdoor venue & there being none of the usual claustrophobic shit of an audience pressed against the front of the stage gasping for air or mosh pit but more of a rave type vibe with everyone in their own personal space, grooving to the music.

Such was the power of Fugazi that their gigs defied the usual rock concert lack of etiquette.

Went to a George Strait concert in Lexington, KY back maybe 10 years ago. Got in this like VIP front row thing. It was outside in the spring so all the women were wearing sun dresses and shit. By the end of the concert everyone was pretty drunk. This one woman stood on a table and flipped her dress up and showed George he bare spread asshole and screaming "I love you George!" She then asked me to help her down from the table and damn if it wasn't NASCAR and Indy driver Danica Patrick. Craziest concert of my life.
