Their earliest incarnation when it was just Scott and John was basically a 1:1 imitation of the Righteous Brothers, hence the name. It's arguable that the only reason Scott started singing lead (originally John was the lead singer) was because they wanted a strong baritone to compete with Bill Medley's.
