My first guitar was a gift back when I was gigging as a bassist and was only somewhat interested in learning guitar at the time. It was a surprise gift and a hand-me-down so it's not my first pick by any means but it's a nice quality Gibson SG (red) and it has been very faithful to me and the person who had it before me/gave it to me

I very quickly fell in love with learning songs on guitar and now play almost every day but as nice as my old SG is, it's a bit of a beater and its condition is starting to finally feel like it's limiting me so I'm in the market for a new guitar.

Should I stick with what I know or opt for the only other guitar I've had any experience with (that an ex of mine had) that I really enjoyed: an Ibanez RG?

I'm also really torn between getting just another 6 string or a 7 string

I play a 5 string bass (LTD) after having learned everything on a 4 (Yamaha) so I'm used to adapting to extended range , but I kind of like what I've been doing over the years with using heavy gauge strings on my SG to play anywhere from D standard/D Drop C all the way down to A Standard/A Drop G (sometimes even a little lower like F Standard lol)

I've realized that downtuning, while limiting in some ways and, is a lot less brainwork than trying to "relearn" a lot of those songs on an extended range instrument and was curious if anyone has any insight or advice on the decision between a second 6 string w/ heavy gauge strings or a 7 string

Should I just get another 6 and keep my old SG in E Standard maybe? Or try and have almost everything at once via 7 string?
