But for about 4-5 years they were a hip music act that played colleges.

I still have my doubts that Pat Boone ever had any organic fanbase, but usually if you can name it chances are there is someone out there who thinks they were a misunderstood auteur/genius.

Every time. And it's not even his later stuff. EVERY time I go to drop off stuff at Goodwill I see one of his first 3-4 albums in the media section. I don't know if it's related to his SA charges or if Bill was just that oversaturated in the market but he's just a main staple at Goodwill.
