>Electronics, Synth [Synths], Tape [Tapes], Programmed By [Programming], Audio Generator [Audio Evocations], Drums, Percussion, Guitar [Guitars], Bass, Strings [String Instruments], Other [Processes], Sound Designer [Sound Design] – Mike Sandison

Big thing of note being that only Mike is listed as writer and producer for the album.

the number of people on here with no concept of delayed gratification is very telling

why would you listen to some shitty phone recording when you could wait 5 days and hear it studio quality

I bet we won't get any interviews this time so that they don't have to answer about the liner notes

Feels good to have gone to a listening party now I can listen to the leak guilt free lmao. Second half of the album is amazing.
>>
>>130410471
go to the leak thread plz
>>
>>130410407
Literally nobody forced them to make those liner notes, they themselves did it
>>
>>130410489
The comment is still valid. They (Mike) felt compelled to include those specific liner notes and they didn't want to answer about them so they're not accepting interviews. Oh you thought they would've preferred to make different notes and do interviews but they felt "forced" to do this instead? Think again.

Honestly I have to give credit to these bros again for being the least attention whorey people on the planet. They're really just passionate about making music and nothing else related to being an artist. It just happens to be so incredibly good that it becomes popular and they can't help setting the record straight when people start going crazy with speculation and misconceptions. Now they feel whatever they've said is sufficient. People should get the gist at this point, if they don't, tough shit. They don't give a shit about going back to releasing exclusively to 10 friends if people are being insufferable assholes.
>>
>>130410103

>Am I wrong to think that you should just put both your name and your brother's name on the same credits for everything?
Maybe the brother is making the ‘Heaven’ counterpart album solo.
Or maybe only one of them is still a full-time musician, while the other has a completely different job and just helps out as a hobby. We don’t really know anything.

they've said in a past interview that Mike generally writes most of the tunes and is the key producer, but Marcus plays a big role in the aesthetic and does produce some of them, like Gyroscope.
>>
Friends, the great hexagonal sun approaches on the 29th. Five more days to go. For those joining us now: we have begun an auditory purification pilgrimage to prepare our brains and revisit the catalog of the brothers.

There will be seven totems, one per day:

First Totem - May 22nd: Pre-Twoism Material
Second Totem - May 23rd: Twoism
Third Totem - May 24th: Music Has the Right to Children
Fourth Totem - May 25th: Geogaddi
Fifth Totem - May 26th: The Campfire Headphase
Sixth Totem -May 27th: EPs
Seventh Totem - May 28th: Tomorrow's Harvest
Final Totem - May 29th: Inferno

Third Totem - May 24th: Music Has the Right to Children

The signal reaches the surface.

Sun-faded photographs. Playground voices carried by the wind. Faceless people gather mountaintop and claim a great fruit was seen. Educational tapes left running inside abandoned classrooms. Indigenous tribes are shaken, constant numbers emerge, and a call for rights is relinquished through teal-cyan skies.

For the first time, the brothers fully open the gates to the strange warmth hidden within their world.

Music Has the Right to Children is the absolute classic, imbued with ’90s memory decaying in real time: beautiful, distant, and comforting. Childhood nostalgia, something sacred and fragile, half-remembered through damaged magnetic tape and late summer sunsets.

Behind all the synths and rhythms, the emotion creeps up in the back of the neck with the feeling that something important has already disappeared before we even realized it existed. From mythology, revelation is born. Life sucks.

Today, we gather beneath orange skies and television static to honor the first great transmission. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJj24t6nOn4

>>130410605
Interviews could still be dropping this week my dude, or after the release. Most of the TH interviews dropped after the album, only 1 prior
>>
>>130410761
so in other words literally nothing has changed, they have just for the first time now properly credited Mike.
>>
>>130410110
Keep it to yourself, if people want to open their Christmas presents early, they can, mind your business. Everyone loves a little peak under the tree
>>
why is everyone freaking out over the credits?
all the other albums just say "written and produced by Marcus and Mike", which yeah to a lot of people would imply they both did everything equally, but that was always most likely not the case
technically saying it was written and produced/recorded by both brothers is accurate and doesn't actually mean everything is 50/50
its probably just more specific on this one instead of being vague, which is more to the industry standard of giving specific credits
>>
>>130411145
It's so over.
>>
>>130411145
doing it like they did before is generally based tho, causes less strife in bands
>>
>>130410110
>no concept of delayed gratification
Does that really have anything to do with gratification?
Do you ruin the first time you hear it in good quality by having already heard it in bad quality beforehand? Not really.
>>
>>130411145
>john lennon walks into the room and farts while paul writes another granny music banger
>gets equal co-credit
>my brother, my flesh and blood, the guy who poses in every single picture of the band ever taken
>oh he played drums on a track i guess
>>
>>130411383
What if it was Marcus' idea? Why are we assuming Mike suddenly got an ego and demanded full credits?
>>
>>130411383
except the credits say Marcus did the sound design, synths, tapes, and "other processes"
I genuinely think people are conflating "producer" with the general definition of "to make something" instead of the music industry definition of "mixed and mastered"
Mike being the only producer doesn't mean he's the only one who *made* anything, it most likely just means he did the bulk of the mixing and mastering that's all

you're not special.
art is too be experienced in any form.
someone else dictating your method of enjoy a work defeats the entire purpose.
(ah but it's made to be experienced in THIS way) you say.

Says who? who dictates that?
If everyone has the exact same experience with a piece there's no fucking point.
>>
>>130411924
i think violating the wishes of an artist after a 13 year wait because people are too impatient to make it through another 90 hours is just sad
it would be one thing if they didnt care but it was mentioned everywhere many times to not record the entire thing
both when you purchased the tickets, and at the events
no one is saying it doesnt count as "experiencing art" its just a very shitty thing to do

outside of tomorrows harvest all their releases are over two decades old
warp might want a more standardized crediting
the uk has also left the eu since tomorrows harvest which may have affected some copyright laws

their old credits were vague and not industry standard

I don't remember any of the first times I've listened to any album ever and I've got 5k+ rates on RYM. There's a generation of people aka zoomers which have sprinkled conservative preoccupations on top of the meta discoveries of the previous gen. "Crediting the artist", "respecting the artist wishes", some of these things are extremely important to them as a way to connect with art in a world where everything has become transitory. They're rolling back the changes and attempting to bring back "the object", as music attempts to be a CD, a vinyl, a cassette - all of the 3 in this case - but is most overtly just a piece of soundwave without any mythology around it. You obtain the items as an exchange of value with the artist, you don't actually go out of your way to use them in a musical way. For younger BOC fans, listening to the leak breaks the myth that has been passed down to them: that they are control-freak storytellers as much as they are musicians.

Happy to have heard it the same day those privileged few who live in a world capital.

mods clearly didn't understand my post so let me make it more clear.

The small embryo is already visible
Brain, Eyes and other structures
Beating heart is pumping blood...

(The joke was the sampling in The Word Becomes Flesh, thank you for making me explain the joke.)

Idk I keep listening to the new single and it's just so meh. It's really not growing on me
>>
Boards of Canada are pastoral & heavenly - this sounds like the soundtrack to a DOOM reboot....
>>
>>130418279
I've seen a decent amount of people who went to the listening parties say it's one the "weaker" tracks on the album
>>
>>130418291
>inferno
>>
>>130418279
>>130418331
i'd say so yeah, there's a lot of neat things on the record, tracks 7, 10 and 11 and 14 were very standout to me.
>>
>>130418335
Exactly my problem. At least Geogaddi is earthy, and Tomorrows Harvest is barren but not hellish. This is just straight up demoic stuff. I wanna feel like I'm floating listening to these guys not like I need to put on a demonslayer suit. That's fucking gay
>>
>>130410055
Damn i was hoping you meant blue oyster cult
>>
>>130418335
>>130418376
it's pretty floaty yet punchy, the setting it brought to me when i heard it was that it's very dystopian but not bleak dystopian, it's like hell is on earth but as if it is more the status quo rather than damnation.
kinda like, "it is what it is" sort of feeling.
It’s like if after death the world would return to the womb
>>
>>130418391
Well I hope they do a more positive album after this one, if they do another one (which I do hope they do... because I like them)
>>
i swear every person is saying the album sounds like something different
ive seen people say it's optimistic and upbeat, demonic, gothic and shoegaze, and funky and retro
ive even seen a few people compare it to autechre like wtf is going on
>>
>>130418410
would be cool but doubt it.
they've always been more partial to gloomy melancholic atmospheres.
(maybe they'll change their mind)
>>
>>130418376
>>130418391
>SATellite ANthem ICarus
>The Devil Is in the Details
>Geogaddi (66 minutes and six seconds, 666 megabytes when ripped to MP3
>Beware the Friendly Stranger

They were always evil. The music was good, but they were always on the other side, lol.

>>130418410
The Tomorrow's Harvest IS Inferno. There is no hope (at least, that's what they want you to think)
>>
>>130418417
When they DO make music with positive themes it's my favorite of theirs. Even Geogaddi has flashes of this. Tomorrow's Harvest too (New Seeds). Always their best in my opinion
>>
>>130418435
I don't buy it desu that seems like soccer mom type bullshit. They are way more explicitly engaging with catholicism on this record - they're just being edgy about it
>>
>>130418413
let me set it somewhat straight for you.
it's not shoegaze, it's sometimes upbeat but in more of a groovy way so funky is right.
Gothic yes, sometimes oriental.
autechre no, i don't know where someone got that, maybe some of the sound design is slightly reminiscent?
retro in the way that most BOC works are yes.

It's like if you attended and eerie sunday mass in the womb with a dj.

The most upbeat tracks on the record are "Arena Amercanada" and "You Retreat In Time And Space". Imo
>>
>>130418444
yes they do, it's just not their go-to is what i meant, they've always stated they go for a more emotionally ambiguous feel.
>>
>>130418469
>>130418458
>>130418444
>>130418435
The first anon I'm replying here gets it - BOC are not satanic... It's like The Binding of Isaac. They're just engaging with themes.
>>
>>130418469
appreciate this ty
is it gothic in a music genre way or more as in being dark in tone and subject content? that's one of the descriptors that's making me the most interested but I've seen people explain it as being gothic by way of being actually shoegaze/post rock/industrial and others saying it's more just the morbid or sombre vibe
>>
>>130418458
i dunno, the hexagon, the "vibe"... These aren't the kind of music that uplifts the soul; on the contrary, they always took me to lower mindspaces. I liked them for that reason, but I never felt genuine happiness listening to BoC, only a "nostalgic" kind of existentialism (which is a bad feeling), and sometimes even dread.

Things that generate negative emotions aren't good. The duo isn't Christian, for sure. they seem to be a kind of new age/atheist/satanist (it amounts to the same thing in the end) who have a materialistic worldview with a strange spirituality embedded, as if the devil actually created the world. That's what I conclude from their music: a soundscape for a world that lies in evil.

>we're not Satanists, or Christians, or pagans. We're not religious at all. We just put symbols into our music sometimes, depending on what we're interested in at the time. We do care about people and the state of the world, and if we're spiritual at all it's purely in the sense of caring about art and inspiring people with ideas.
lol, that's what I would say to throw people off the scent.
>>
>>130418537
>We're not satanists, or christians, or pagans
Or that's would you say if you genuinely did not know what you stood for and were interested in selling an aesthetic product. They make beats, they're not theologians
>>
>>130418537
>new age/atheist/satanist (it amounts to the same thing in the end)
Those things have virtually nothing in common beyond simply being not Christianity lmao
>>
>>130418537
Also:
>new age/atheist/satanist (it amounts to the same thing in the end)
No it does not. Atheists like Schopenhauer were monist & you cannot tell me that eastern shinto/buddhist religions are satanic just because they are godless. That's not how it works
>>
>>130418531
It has elements of both in the thematic and literal way (lightly),but it's very subject to track.
>>
i really didnt find it to be dark and i dont really understand why people are saying that, other than people reading into the inferno name and the music vid imagery/some of the vocal samples, sonically its pretty focused and bouncy, it gets worldy and ethnic at times. they've definitely been way darker than this album
>>
>>130418580
ty based anon
>>
>>130418583
it's dark in sound design but more in the way that a cave is cavernous.
It's not inherently evil but evil COULD exist there without being out of place.

>>130418570

>>
does the album have tape 05 vibe?
>>
God isn't real, faggots
>>
>>130418537
I really do think they just have an obsession with religion, cults and things surrounding them, (it can be a very interesting topic to learn about).
It's not as deep as i think you'd like it to be.
>>
>>130418626
some tracks have a similar sort of worship-y feel yes, but in different ways.
>>
where would you rank it just after one listen?
>>
The way the listening event was introduced as an experimental audio procedure made me imagine myself a member of some esoteric religious cult in a retro-futuristic 1970s, being loaded up with too many drugs and undergoing rituals intended to bring about my supposed enlightenment. The whole thing is like a long, hallucinogenic, spiritual quest. It felt very film-like, maybe the work of Panos Cosmatos comes to mind

>>130418639

They are interested in mining the cultural mythology and media surrounding these ideas rather than endorsing the ideas themselves.... this album is creepy and dark in a pretty campy way, like a kid's memory of watching a satanic panic PSA

It's really hard to say, the venue's lows were insanely drowning out the highs in the tracks so till it releases for real it will be difficult to be definitive but first impression wise
(this may not be accurate to how you would rank it since everyone has different orders and I actually like Tomorrow's Harvest)

i'd put it around here (as of now)
(sorry don't like campfire that much, i know that's sacrilege)
>>
You Retreat In Time And Space was my fave, blissful.
>>
>>130418689
that's a good description.
But i really don't think the intent of this record is a satanic one, it's highly christian though for sure.
>>
>>130418724
without having heard it i figured it would be below geogaddi and MHTRTC for most people but above TCH and TH
sidenote i still will never get why TH was so panned even by fans, its sadly pretty much universally their lowest rated album
>>
>>130418749
i think it's due to the bleakness of it, yes it has a lot of lovely melodic notes, but it's definitely the most overall thematically depressive work they've released. But in some notes it's also their most optimistic.

It's trades spots with MHTRTC a lot for me for the number 2 spot at least when it comes to purely LPs.

>>130418732
It's very lovely, rounds off the experience nicely.
>>

Naraka is literally a ritual track, lol
>>
>>130418778
i think some of it is a bit bleak but the same way people overstate how "satanic" and "scary" geogaddi is i feel like people overstate how "bleak" TH is
i typed out a whole track review of it but to be more concise i think just a few songs are truly bleak, the same way only a few songs on geogaddi are truly scary, but because they are so evocative and powerful they stick with people and thats what they remember the most
>>
>>130418828
Naraka is the Hindu realm of torment is it not?
Hinduism is about spiritual liberation.
Krishna is the god of love and compassion.
(i'm not religious so this is just based off cursory reading)

aren't the voices just in prayer?

>>130418833
I completely agree
people just kinda like to put entire mood labels on each release despite the variety in each, another problem that people seem to have with Tomorrow's Harvest is that it's more film-score-y

I don't really see the issue in that since BOC loves film and makes home films in their free-time so it's not out of place.
>>
satanic album preaching against religion as a whole...
>>
>>130418871
Yes, but there is a clear subversion, an inversion of the meaning of the prayer; the track's name is literally "hell," it's a ritual in the very same sense as praying the Lord's Prayer backwards.
>>
>>130418913
or it could just be a reference to iskcon, re: their interest in cults, followers were often called hare krishna's in the 70s-90s
or it could just be a regular prayer, in the same sense a christian person going through a hellish experience would typically start praying to their god

>>
>>130420625
Yes, happy as well as sad tears is bittersweet, euphoric means intensely happy
What you just described is poignant and melancholic, not euphoric
>>
imagine caring about how someone else listens to an album. love y'all but some of you need some introspection on what you let upset you
>>
amazing there has not been a good leak yet. how is that possible?
>>
Here is Mike S from a Tom Harvest interview saying they both do it all, including Marcus writing:

"Sandison: "We throw tracks back and forward at each other. Sometimes we jam the core idea down as a take, or one of us will start something and hand it over, and vice-versa. There isn't really one method or any particular strength for either of us because it changes from track to track. We both write melodies but at the same time we're both technicians in some way, so the process is quite unpredictable and messy.""
>>
I am manifesting a leakless week because I personally want it on friday, not on a weekday.
i want to come home from work on friday have the whole weekend ahead of me along with new BoC, that's how it is going to go down, no leaks.
>just don't listen to the leak
If it leaks, I won't be able to stop myself.

>>
> Dotted across 70 minutes of music, these highs are fleeting. Inferno is another epic BOC album statement and diehard true believers will bow down to the duo’s ability to conjure their signature corrupted nostalgia anew. The rest of us might regard them as we would a cult leader: impressive, even charismatic figures with a dubious amount of substance.

I would chalk this up to the reviewer being bald and unattractive, but Fantano will love this album. Fantano isn’t ugly though. Maybe that is the issue.

>>130422317

>>
>>130422315
I mean it's extremely common practice to release something final week and we know they have at least 1 more music video coming, probably 2. My guess is one more by Robert Beatty (which my guess is Age of Capricorn) and then 1 more music video by the brothers which obviously is already kind of confirmed to be You Retreat in Time and Space, I haven't actually seen it myself cause I don't wanna spoil it but people are saying that that was the only song at the listening party with a video accompanying the music.
>>
most yogys are perverts and want to suck your dick.
hare krishna surely deserves to be here. the brothers included every other religion though,
>>
my favorite is father and son. it's not as wild as jaquard causeway. it resembles Palace Posy, as it waves voices with the actual thing
>>
>>130422351
I'm not sure it's exactly confirmed there's multiple music videos on the way
Come to Dust was released as a single for TH almost 3 months after it came out, boc don't necessarily do things in a typical way
>>
>>130422463
>I'm not sure it's exactly confirmed there's multiple music videos on the way
Beatty has kind of confirmed there's more coming by him in his "So far" tweet. And You Retreat in Time and Space had a video at the listening parties, now maybe that will stay a listening party exclusive that's entirely possible.
>>
>>130422328

if all of Tomorrow's Harvest sounded like Semena Mertvykh it would have been amazing, I say that album isn't bleak enough for its reputation.

fun fact about Semena Mertyykh is that the brothers apparently finds it funny how hopeless it sounds after 2 relatively optimistic sounding tracks hinting at a new beginning, then it slaps you with Semena for the finale to bring you way back down.
