Does anyone know what the exact release time is for the digital download on Bleep? How does it work exactly? Can you switch timezones and get it early or something?
>>
Unfortunately, I am quite disappointed with Inferno, and this feels like a huge step down from the brilliant Tomorrow's Harvest. The first five tracks serve as a fantastic opener, all being punchy, evocative, and guiding us to a new side to BoC's musical process. But so much of this album feels underdeveloped, unchallenging, unmoving, and completely stagnant. Take, for example, All Reason Departs, which starts with a beautiful motif and then spends the last four minutes of its runtime meandering aimlessly. Of course, there are some really wonderful moments in the album’s second half, such as the brilliant The Process. But it is a largely uninteresting affair with predictable track structures and a serious lack of BoC’s usual effectiveness. Many of these tracks simply don’t have enough layers to dig into, and worse yet, some of the drum choices feel incongruent. One example is the distractingly gross snare drum in Naraka that comes in at 3:45. Such a shame, because that is one of this album’s strongest tracks up until that point.

it being a deranged weird piece of music is exactly why i like it, the sample is taken from The Jesus Trip (1971) and imo it fits with the rest of the voice samples on the album. they're all more humanlike than usual, but also heavily distorted almost corrupted by some kind of electronic consciousness

>Sad to say I liked the bootleg better, before I could hear everything clearly. I miss the textures and the tunes, here they take a back seat to the 80s production and the album concept, which seems to be about confusion.
>The ambiguous "message" of the vocals is so in your face that it starts to not matter if it is satire or mere symptom of our confused world. The White House using BoC music in a propaganda video in BoC VHS-glitch style is icing on the cake. When does something fully become what it mimics or satirizes? Becoming what you fear. BoC is fully part of the AI-dystopian landscape now, not just observing from a distance.

You have to blame Warp for that, this doesn't remove any quality to what BoC did. One of the brothers even said in an interview like twenty years ago that they don't even have a say on the t-shirts designs.
Strange for a label that pictures itself as a home for fringe electro acts to have such corpo ways, but apparently that's how you survive and blossom in the jungle of music labels today...

if you think inferno even comes close to everything else they've done you need help, they seriously fell off. if you like inferno your opinion doesnt matter
>>
>>130454995
It is absolutely a more interesting record than TH is, saying otherwise is a cope.
>>
>>130452998
I agree with this sentiment 1000%. It's all rounded corners and sanitized in a way that feels like it's too in service to this idea they had. And in doing that, they lost a somuchof their essence.

To me it's a step down from Tomorrow's Harvest. TH told its new idea/story through the music while still being very BOC. Inferno, like a true film score thatserves as pure backing to the image, feels like it needs more to tell its story, and the splattering of vocal samples isn't enough. It's missing the soul of BOC.

This is the only BOC release that has left me 70% unfeeling. A lot of it feels empty and plodding. Could this be to the fact that Marcus has a reduced role? Could be.

Five listens thus far. Old school BOC lifer. Purchased Hi Scores the month it was released back in '96. I understand that in five more listens my feelings can totally change. I'm gonna keep jamming it.
>>
>>130455026
i don't like how hifi and punchy it sounds
>>
>>130455026
BoC has never completely clicked with me on first listen, it has taken numerous listens and time before it did. There are a couple of songs on Inferno that I feel like I got everything I was ever going to get out of them on the first listen but there are others that I'm already finding myself get a better grip of and really start liking. For example, I doubt Prophecy at 1420MHz is ever going to grow much in my appreciation, the first time I heard it I got it, and nothing has changed since then. I think Hydrogen is one of those tracks too, one listen is enough to know that it's kind of middling.

TH to me is the only album that never really changed with time, the tracks I liked the first time I heard it are still the same tracks I like today and the others I feel the same about.
> It's all rounded corners and sanitized in a way that feels like it's too in service to this idea they had.
This is exactly how I feel about TH and I feel like Inferno is a breath of fresh air in comparison to that. Inferno goes a bunch of different places and isn't just one idea extended over an entire album. TH has nothing like the contrast between Father and Son and Memory Death.
>>
>>130455026
I dunno, TH never really clicked for me. To me, that's the sanitized self-serious album.
>>
"Music people" have poor taste in music.

Let me explain. Everyone likes music--everyone likes good music. However, "music people" (allegedly) like bad music.

If you have bookshelves of records and think Boards of Canada is good, then sorry, but you have poor musical discernment. Boards of Canada is objectively bad.
>>
Into The Magic Land and Blood In The Labyrinth are too similar, they do the same thing with the instrumental swelling in and out and they come right after each other.

It's reminiscent of Cold Earth and Sick Times on TH, two tracks that are too similar, it's been years and I still get them mixed up and it'll 100% be the same on Inferno
>>
>>130453512
I apologize Mr. President I wasn't familiar with your game
>>
>>130455368
You'll be able to distinguish them as "the one that sounds really similar to Dayvan Cowboy" and "the one that has the sitar twang on it"
I agree with you though.
>>
1. Geogaddi 10/10
2. Inferno 9/10
3. Hi Scores 9/10
4. Music Has the Right to Children 9/10
5. In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country 8/10
6. Trans Canada Highway 8/10
7. The Campfire Headphase 8/10
8. Twoism 7/10
9. Tomorrow’s Harevest 6.5/10

Inferno is very good. It's been high time that the boys put out something with a slightly more direct, in-your-face feeling. Every release up to this point has felt like world-building through a variety of tones and aesthetics, composing one consistent universe, but inferno feels quite like a narrative that ties it all together, in whatever way you want to interpret it. My initial feeling when I heard Prophecy, which I felt ended up being true to the rest of the album, is that the uneasy, hazy yet nostalgic minimalism of their previous work comprised the veil consistent with the faceless people depicted in their visuals, and it seems like inferno lifts that veil to actually show those faces, possessed by the hellishness that has always lurked in their music. The album has peaks and valleys which really feel like beats of a story, especially 'You Retreat in Time and Space' which genuinely feels like a credits sequence for the entire Boards of Canada universe, almost like a bittersweet resolve to this intersecting conflict between the innocence of humanity/life and higher, ineffable forces, whether good or evil.

Great album, perfect blend of Geogaddi and Tomorrow's Harvest both in themes and structure. 8/10.

All Reason Departs > Naraka > Hydrogen Helium Lithium Leviathan > Blood In The Labyrinth > Arena Amercanada > The Word Becomes Flesh

All of the other short tracks creeps me out and I find it great, Memory Death, Acts of Magic, Somewhere Right Now, Platonia are so rich in atmosphere. They could've been longer and more developed tracks.

You Retreat In Time And Space is really nice but feels out of place, could've been the ender if the album had a stronger narrative instead of poking fun at various themes with the vocal samples. I Saw Through Platonia makes me think that at least one of the bros had a near death experience, the whole thing sounds like a recollection of all the spiritual knowledge you remember before facing death.

I chose to believe that the original name of the album was going to be Hell Interface.

I agree, it's the most lackluster interval on the album and I don't really care for it. Too long-winded and predictable tracks, though the ending to Blood on the labyrinth is kind of nice.
Everything before and afterwards is more engaging. I do take issue with Father and Son, but overall I enjoy the playful vibe of it. Of course it doesn't live up to their first couple of albums, nothing will and I expect considerable backlash beyond their brainwashed fans. It's still a fun release.

They brought enough of their personality to TH that it can be listened to as a strong standalone experience that was heavily influenced by movie scores, but still retained the core of what makes BOC good.

Inferno is the opposite, in that a lot of this stuff would work really well with images in a film, but as a standalone listening experience it feels like something is missing.

It’s all rounded corners and a bit too washed out that their musical identity has been smeared into this middling ground that leaves me cold (perfect for a real score, not so much as a standalone experience). Melodies, chords and sound design feel more neutered .. less distinct than anything they have ever done.

The melodic intent is more grounded and never steps too hard in either direction. Hence the “unfeeling”.

question for you vocal samples haters, do you also hate "The Word Becomes Flesh" ? Because I can't imagine hating that track
>>
>>130456044
you don't like age of capricorn?
>>
>>130453512
Please copyright strike these fascist fucks. They can’t get away with using BOC music like this
>>
>>130456109
Some parts just sound like DAW drafts they would have resampled through hardware on past albums

i don't hate it as much as father and son. the process is a good use of it. just sort of almost in the background, fading in an out.
>>
>>130456260
Father and Son is just a fun track, the "I THINK THATS WONDERFUL" is great

It's a bit of a shitpost track, but them having fun is enjoyable to me

Who here listening to Slipknot rn?

I love this fucking album. Anyone who dosen't like father/son has really bad 'daddy' issues.

that pic is real btw
I took it
>>
>>130456518
I am proud of you, son
>>
i can't believe BoC out-shitposted Aphex Twin.
I guess Autechre need to make a 24 hour long remix of We Are Charlie Kirk now.
>>
>>130456518
i think that's wonderful
>>
>>130456507
My wife and I had a son and I lost my father in the time between Inferno and Tomorrow's Harvest. Will this track make me cry?
>>
you retreat in time and space is such an obvious unoriginal fanservice yet i just can't stop smiling like a retard when i listen to it, i am ashamed that it works on me
>>
>>130456681
because it's a great track just enjoy it nerd
>>
>>130456625
It'll make you cry but not because of anything related to that
>>
>>130456625
The track itself is done in a shitpost-y way, without context, it's difficult to take it seriously. But the source material may hit you in the gut, that's for sure, it's quite a sad conversation between a father and his son (the clip is focused on the dad), they both seem quite religious, but the son seems brainwashed to the point he refuses the love from his own father.
>>
I know people consider Prophecy to be its own thing but I'm finding Blood In The Labyrinth somewhat similar. Anyone else?
>>
>>130456681
>>130456681
why be so cynical? why can't people just think "wow this track is pleasant and reminds me of youth" without prefacing it with ERMMMM NOSTALGIABAIT FANSERVICE MUCH??? is it just a Gen Z thing?
>>

because it doesn't sound like youth you retard
the entire album sounds like some shit a zoomer would make to try and evoke late 20th century nostalgia, and it doesn't work

>is it just a Gen Z thing?
i guarantee you were born after 9/11 so why don't you tell us?

Why are /mu/ posters like this
>>
>>130456044
OK, I listened to the whole thing and it mostly sucks. There were only like 3 tracks which made me stop and think "this is really good". There were more tracks that made me hover over the skip button and a whole bunch of just whatever stuff. When they released Prophecy at 1420 I thought "wow this is shit, but Tape 5 was great so this is probably the one of the few stinkers on the album". There's more of them. The drums on some tracks are ass, the mixing is sometimes weird and disjointed, the whole thing seems like some tryhard edgy boi tried to replicate a BoC album. Fucking sucks. Dudes saying this is better than Harvest are either high on crack or shitposting.
>>
>whole thing seems like some tryhard edgy boi tried to replicate a BoC album
you already posted this before
sloppy!

the title and cover is so cheeky, because this is album is so playful and goofy.

No, it’s just the initial reception being black-and-white. Shades of grey will emerge. I enjoyed some tracks and were baffled by others, but only listened to it once

so how do i lissun to it? or have people who are talking about it ordered the physical/listened to the bootleg?

from what i've seen its mostly the lyrics in Age of Capricorn/Father and Son/The Word Becomes Flesh that divides people, personally i really like it

30 mins until midnight here. Won't be able to sleep until I listen to it but I have work tomorrow. (yes I know it leaked but I want to wait for the official release).

Apropos nothing: Media in my country are calling BoC "techno pioneers" kek.

Gorillaz used a lot of the same Eastern instruments in their album this year too, interesting

Listening to TH before Inferno and Jacquard Causeway is like something you and your shitass tone deaf friends would have accidentally made in music class wtf is this dirge. After a good start to the album too.
