Acts of Magic and Memory Death make me want to trip balls, what a fucking sequence

>>130470404The whole album is brilliantly sequenced. SRNITF into Naraka is so good.

>>130470330It's interesting how traditionally ambient artists come out with this very maximalist album, people just seem to have no chill anymore.
i don't really like the album. none of it's connected with me so far and i think it's wholly inferior to Twoism, MHTRTC, and GeogaddiHOWEVER. the second last song (You Retreat in Time and Space) is one of the most beautiful pieces of music they've ever made. almost made me cry, it was just so unmistakably Boards and so emotional
reading this bullshit gives me no hope, taste is fucking dead, cant believe so many people cant see how this is such an insanely weak album for them. everyones so quick to say its their best, like giddy children mindlessly praising anything in front of them
I'm thinking Acts Of Magic and Memory Death are meant to highlight the primitivism of religion since they follow Naraka. You have the flies buzzing around what is probably a corpse in AOM, then you get the heart monitor beep in Memory Death, and all that is followed by The World Becomes Flesh, which is obviously a clinical, scientific description of a human forming.
>>130470523In a few months you'll get it and be posting how it's their best

>>130470745which is annoying as You Retreat in Space and Time could be a minute or two longer with another phase of the song and I think it could have been one of their best ever, as it is, it is a lovely retrospective of their career, but it could have been even better.
>>130470817glad not everyone here is mentally disabled anon ty
You know what?I take back all I said about this album.I like the boys, I bet they had reasons for such album layout and lineup. And I bet they tried their best for a good comeback.I'll just thank them for the couple of genuinely good pieces they snug into my life. Maybe they wanted everyone to find a piece in it they can relate to. And also for making Naraka function rather as intelligence filter among people than a shitty track.Maybe that's what it is for. Thanks BoC for the new album. I apologize for my previous posts and will stop talking bad about it.

it's cool to see that everybody loves this album except one random weirdo
Slowly seeing fewer negative reactions as the days pass by."Gotta admit: it's growing on me."At a listening event yesterday, I overheard a group laughing amongst themselves because people on twitter were calling it "mid."Few positive reviews come out and now, suddenly, everyone feels it's one of the more interesting albums released in recent months/years.Not saying it's their best work, but it's clearly a good record. Better than good, even.Sort of reminds me why I left /mu/ in the first place. The act of shitting on something popular/anticipated for the sake of appearing "cool" is the most poseur shit imaginable.Anyway, grateful for this record. I am gonna give Inferno another listen tonight. Tape 05 did take me a few listens before I really started loving it so we will see. Gave it a listen earlier this morning while isolated in the woods. I was going to sit outside on a chair with headphones, but the bugs were bad so I opted to listen in my car instead. I thought it was incredible. The mixing on TH produced some of the best sounds i've heard from my mediocre car speakers and I found the same was true for Inferno. Those drums could cut through solid granite, though I couldn't pick up on a lot of the vocal snippets. It feels like one of those albums that's supposed to be felt more than anything. My initial impressions were that:>Age of Capricorn was the brightest and most hopeful. Sounded like it came from MHTRTC>Somewhere Right Now sounded like something from Old Tunes era or earlier>Acts of Magic was playing while a bunch of flies and insects were swarming my car, which made me feel like I was part of some shamanic ritual. Very fitting>Memory death is extremely prescient to a dream (nightmare) I had a couple weeks ago involving the album>The Word Becomes Flesh is the head bobber for me. It feels very similar to the old Hell Interface remix of Trapped, where those squelchy synth stabs just keep building and building. >The recurring bursts of strings on Labyrinth sounded amazing on speakers>All Reasons Depart is one of the most interesting tracks imo. The contrast of tribal drums and playful synth plucks really stood out>The Process into You Retreat made me cry pretty good, and I'm not even sure in a good way
Theres so much modular on inferno. Even in songs you don't think use it like arena
>>130472662so cool you were able to be there when they were working on it
I’m cumming
I haven't smoked weed for years, but I decided to smoke to this album and it's a religious experience, started thinking a lot.I get the idea that the album is trying to convey how religions are fake and what we percieve as god isn't god. God is AI or a Demiurge figure in our eyes. It wouldn't be out of order coming from BoC.Crazy stuff, haven't enjoyed an album so much for years and the level ofn nternet reaction is so fun too. They went against what so many artists do, and they made listening parties irl (so many people say it was great and people were great) and now we are talking about the album even in a cynic place like 4chan. I think it's more about how it makes you feel rather than what the music is.

Really, really fond of how "loose" and "sloppy" the cut-and-screwed vocals are. Yeah I know, sounds like copium, but something about the sudden cuts, slight stretching, comb filtering etc. just scratches my brain the right way, I think it's because it reminds me so much of MHTRTC or Old Tunes, brings to mind the sight of them going at a cassette or VHS tape with a razor trying to chop up sentences instead of using a DAW>>130470576That and Father And Son's YOUR MOTHER, YOUR BROTHER, YOUR SISTER COULD BE YOUR ENEMY

WHAT SONG IS TAPE 05???
Just finished my first listen. Been my favorite artists since 2005. My favorite album is Geogaddi but MHTRTC is two milimeters behind it.First impression is that the first half of the album is a lot stronger, but Magic Land and the last two tracks are decent. I was hoping for more simple synth music like Kiteracer 2, or for them to revisit their old evil shit like Noatak, Chinook, or that track that Machinedrum made an edit of. It's fine, I remember Tomorrow's Harvest didn't wow me at first either, but Inferno feels different in a way that I'm not sure the whole album will grow on me like TH did.

Listening to it again this morning and damn some of that shit is just *that* goodEven the tracks with parts that I would consider "less interesting" on their own work in the context of the whole album and through the production that's gone into themThis is really a movie-type experience, you really have to listen to it in longer sittingsJust got through Memory Death again and just, holy
The Word Becomes Flesh is in the Backrooms movie.

Schizo here. I've listened to Inferno on vinyl, on Spotify (phone w/ headphones), on Spotify (Alexa w/speakers) and now Spotify (PS5 on TV) and it sounds very noticeably different on each platform.>Yeah obviously, retardI mean VERY noticeably different. More so than any other albums I've done this with. I don't know enough about production to sufficiently explain it, but it sounds new/altered/remixed? every time. for a track coming from an openly atheist music act, from an album seemingly critiquing belief systems, You Retreat In Time And Space sure is doing a lot of heavy lifting to purify my sinful filthy mind.
>>130477329Bro wtf did happened to Bugs in that image?
Are we really gonna get no interviews? Does set my mind racing with the credit change that they have had some kind of split if we don't.
>>130477353I'd give it at least a week before jumping to conclusions like that
I spent the better part of this entire year listening to BoC on repeat, long before the Inferno marketing campaign started up, I'm a relatitively newfag fan, I discovered them like 10 years ago, it was a slow process, liking a handful of songs, revisiting them and eventually digging deeper. Wasn't until about 5 years ago maybe that I became a fan for real and each year since then has just been more and more rewarding listening to their music over and over again, my appreciation just keeps growing. I'm so happy Inferno is as good as it is, I wasn't sure what to expect from it but it exceeded expectations. I'm absolutely confident that I will still be listening to this 5 years from now, discovering new things to appreciate about the songs.
>>130477353They definitely didn't split it still says in the notes: "Boards of Canada: Mike Sandison & Marcus Eoin". If they did split I don't think it would have both their names listed

>>130477329I don't think they're atheist. >>130476806People have been bringing this up, but is there any reason to think the brothers would want to split with Warp? All of the other huge IDM facts have remained with them without issue. Seems like if your label just lets you wait as long as you want until your music is ready for release, that's a pretty ideal arrangement, unless there's some copyright issue that makes them apprehensive about releasing older stuff thru Warp.

Inferno has made me appreciate Tomorrow's Harvest a lot more. Not because one is superior to the other, but listening to Inferno for 10 hours straight made me realize how degraded my attention span has become over the last 10 years. Inferno is extremely focused, which is great for keep the listener's attention, but the previous albums are asking a lot more of the listener's attention without any 'extreme' payoff. Or, it feels that way because of desensitization. I suppose that's why Inferno is seen as a maximalist BoC album.

I forgot how much MHTRTC drags until the middle of the album. It's weird because it has some really iconic BoC songs, but there's so many weak points that it feels like their weakest album. HOLY!!!!!!!So I guess TH, Inferno, Geogaddi, and TCH are better than MHTRTC. I never would've imagined, but here we are.
>>130478745mhtrtc definitely didn't age very well. there's a lot of fluff on there i personally always thought it was substantially inferior to Twoism and Geogaddi, i'm glad people are coming around
>>130478745MHTRTC has always been bottom of the pack for me. I would listen to either of the old tunes tapes or r35tt over it any day.The album still has its incredible moments of course, but it seems like it came at a weird point in their development between the more simplistic old stuff and the complexity of Geogaddi.
>>130472175Geogaddi, Easy
>>130478750It doesn't help that it's so derivative of trip-hop elements of that era. Twoism definitely wins because it uses that language more concisely and wraps it up in 8 tracks. The album font on Twoism owns up to what it's doing too. MHTRTC is so odd. Turquoise Hexagon, Kaini Industries, Roygibiv, Happy Cycling, and the few other stand outs should've been on Twoism. MHTRTC should've been the weird little darkweb EP.
kick pete standing alone - open the light and replace it with chinook and whitewater and mhtrtc would be perfection
>>130478901that's boc maxima. what you're describing is boc maxima. and yes it has better flow than music has
>>130478262Someone finding the original source and determining the second set of lyrics is from a woman who was so high on PCP her friend drowned in front of her and she did nothing to help really elevated this song for me, horrifying (yet groovy) track
NarakaDeep TimeYou Retreat in Time and SpaceSomewhere Right Now in the FutureGoated
>>130472175Anything else than Geogaddi is incorrect, probably one of the most perfect electronic albums ever.Geogaddi>Tomorrows Harvest>In a Beautiful Place Out of the Country>Hi Scores>Music has the Right to Children>Inferno>The Campire Headphase
>>130479075Correct ranking. Maybe I'd put Inferno last tho.
>>130479075>>130479083>oh my favorite album? it's the one with the heavy religious and occult themes, predominant vocal sampling, widely varied instrumentation, and red-colored cover. my LEAST favorite album? gotta be the other one with the heavy religious and occult themes, predominant vocal sampling, widely varied instrumentation, and red-colored cover.make it make sense
>>130479165My favorite album is when the last track is nothing, I love hearing nothing for 1:46 minutes
>>130479165It's too popular and I can't be seen enjoying it or else that might be cringe.
>>130479075You’re pretty much deluded and clinically insane and disregarded if you think MHTRTC is better than Inferno
>>130479191This.I think TCH is better than MHTRTC
after about 6 listens, all the tracks have grown on me big time. this is huge because after my 3rd listen I thought this album was a dud. the only track that still doesn't work for me is The Word Becomes Flesh. I also wish more of the interlude tracks faded into the following track, like Deep Time goes into All Reason. I think the album has 3 distinct arcs and I strongly prefer the one fron Deep Time onwards to end of album.
>>130479248I love Word Becomes Flesh, leave it to BoC to make a lecture about the growth of a chicken embryo funky as hell
>>130479251A chicken? I thought it was a human embryo. But yes, Twbf is a great track. I can’t find a flaw on the album.
>>130479269Ye if you listen it says yolk, albumin, mentions an oviduct instead of fallopian tube etc
>>130479251>>130479269to me, twbf just doesn't click musically, I don't vibe with the uneasy chords combined with the subject matter.
and also the fact that the album already has a track with the same voice manipulation gimmick, Father and Son.
>>130478296not saying they have any issues, just that financially it might make sense to release a bocset themselves. It would do great even with minimal promo
>>130479075holy based
>>130479191Inferno is really growing on me, I won't be surprised if it moves up higher on the list above Hi-Scores
>>130479075utterly terrible list
>>130479294I judge it from a holistic perspective. Inferno to me is one big arc. I guess it could be viewed in acts, but I see it has a very complete story with one arc. Twbf is perfectly sequenced. I see the album quite literally as a movie in my mind, and Twbf is a pivotal moment in that movie.
>>130479343bar In a beautfiul place being that high.
>post yfw the first minute of Deep Time
>>130479343>>130479353Lets see your list then faggot
Inferno has already ended up growing on me pretty hard after a few listens, enough to the point I'd probably put it around the upper-middle echelon of their catalog. The only big things holding it back are the percussion (it doesnt really sound bad but its wholly uninteresting compared to older records) and a few of the tracks feeling like Boards of Canada by the numbers
The Process is absolutely devastating. It reminds me of the scene in Children of Men where they're carrying the newborn child through a warzone and world brought on by civil unrest and societal collapse.
why tf is the red vinyl still orderable on bleep?!? i have invested lot of money into this """limited""" vinyl!!!!
>>130479373not him but for me objectively at this pointGeogaddi >= Inferno >= MHTRTC > TCH > TH
>>130479563oh sorry In a beautiful place I'd put above TCH. It's not an album just an EP but still love it to death.
>>130479535Yeah, it’s pretty bleak. I get 9/11 type event vibes.
was reading a little about Jack Van Impe, the televangelist sampled in Age of Capricornfrom wikipedia:>...said a one-world religion will form, named "Chrislam"; the joining of the world's two largest religions (Christianity and Islam).aid a one-world religion will form, named "Chrislam"; the joining of the world's two largest religions (Christianity and Islam).aid a one-world religion will form, named "Chrislam"; the joining of the world's two largest religions (Christianity and Islam)feels thematically appropriate, with the more eastern instrumentation on Naraka and Into the Magic Land
>>130479609holy moly I fucked up the copy paste there
Its crazy people are already ranking this album. I have so many memories and moments attached to their previous records it will be like another 2 years before i could accurately rank inferno amongst them.
>>130479723People are just glad that it isn't shit. TH came out during the highest point of my life (so far) but it still never clicked, though it instantly takes me back and I love it for that.
>>130479165music is more than just themes. just because Geogaddi and Inferno sound similar on paper, that doesn't mean they sound similar (or are in the same realm as far as quality goes). what the fuck is wrong with you faggots? why do you get so snarky when people don't have the same opinions as you?
>>130479075i didn't like TH much, but still a great ranking. i appreciate how low MHTRTC and TCH arehow would you rank Twoism? just curious
>>130479165>Who cares if they sound almost completely different? They both have similar themes and a similar amount of vocal sampling! How could you not like them equally? Is this seriously how you retards engage with music lmao
>>130472175Geogaddi > Twoism > In a Beautiful Place > Hi Scores > Boc Maxima > Peel Session > MHTRTC > Tomorrow's Harvest > TCH > Inferno
I like it.
in a beautiful place = geogaddi > hi scores > inferno = twoism > maxima > tch = old tunes 1 > mhtrtc > trans canada highway > r35tt > old tunes 2 > th
>>130479847>they sound almost completely differentI think maybe you downloaded the wrong album and listened to Sabrina Carpenter or something by mistake if you think this sounds "completely different" than Geogaddi
all of their albums are sharing a house together while inferno is chained up in a shed in the yard wearing a helmet and eating crayons
>>130480061Nice fanfic. Inferno IS the house.
>>130479810I can't believe I forgot about Twoism and Trans Canada Highway. Twoism is below HiScores and Trans Canada Highway is probably last on my list. If Hi-Scores didn't have Everything you Do Is a Balloon, Twoism would probably be higher up since that one has another GOAT BOC song Sixtyniner.
dont let any of this distract you from the fact seven forty seven is still their best song
>>130480053Geogaddi is unmistakably IDM while Inferno is unmistakably not. Are you retarded?Their production style has completely changed since 2002. When was the last time you actually listened to Geogaddi?
>>130470330>The Guardian>2/5>Financial Times>2/5Even the negative reviews somehow count as positive
Linga luder luder luderOhhh ah ah ohWahhh wahh wahh uhh ahhh Blaaa blllww bluh blahShout out to my fav underrated lyrics on father and son
>>130480189I'd unironically be more offended by a 5/5 from The Guardian
>>130463761I missed one more Grauniad moment>either that or they’re just deploying lazy orientalism (which later reappears with the sitar twang of Deep Time)So retarded they can't even get the track titles right
>>130480265YouregonnacallhimaliaaarNooimnotcalliinghimaliaar
>>130479798>what the fuck is wrong with you faggots? why do you get so snarky when people don't have the same opinions as you?
the second half of The ProcessI love what they've done with the BoC-esque tracks on this album, they're so much more despondent, there's no pretty nostalgia attached to them, they just sound solemn Somewhere Right Now in the FutureMemory DeathThe ProcessI saw Through Platonia are all great
>>130479563>>130479373Geogaddi > IABPOITC > Inferno > TCH > MHTRC >TH > Twoism > Trans Canada Not listened enough to Hi Scores to rate it but think it's pretty iffy desu, bar THS and EYDIAB and you can get those elsewhere. I'll go for BoC Maxima, Twoism or Old Tunes if I want my early Boards fix.
Melon will give this album a 7.
>>130480673Light 8 even though it’s a 9
>>130480679It’s a solid 9 but he’ll cherry pick stuff and say things like cold calculated etc. his electronic reviews are dogshit. He’s old now he’ll probably finds it boring
>>130480723he did a live listening thing of a few tracks and didn't seem to enjoy them. He didn't like age of capricorn, lol. how's that even possible
Win win whatever he givesGood score removes any last trolling material bad score and I can disregard his bitch ass forever. So yeah he will probably give on in the middle to annoy everyone
>>130480758Seriously? lol he’s reviewing the mainstream shit constantly his ears are used to easy listen playlist kinda tracks
Still in "The Process" of reviewing Inferno but this likely my finished ranking list #1-11. Of the top 5 official LPs, it (Inferno) would probably be a close second behind Music but in the grand scheme of the discography they're pretty much tied for 2nd... for now.....
"you retreat" sounds like a redone version of another song but I haven't binged boc in awhile. it's really bugging me
>>130480894He gave Fire-Toolz recent album a light 7. If he can listen to crazy fusion music like that and enjoy it, I’d be shocked if he can’t fuck with a new BoC album.
BoC came back before she did, bros.....
Have they ever had more of a filter song than Father and Son?Zoetrope maybe, but even then most people just find that 'nice' at worst. Palace Posy I guess but I don't think it's iconic enough.
>>130480956sort of like pieces of 84 pontiac dream and everything you do is a balloon in the second half
>>130480956it gives massive Everything You Do Is a Balloon vibes. I like it but it is kinda just a pastiche really,
The Campfire Headphase > Geogaddi > Inferno > IABPOITC > Music Has The Right To Children > Old Tunes Vol 1&2 > Tomorrow's Harvest > Twoism > Trans Canada Highway
>>130481000bro, you can't just group old tunes 1&2 together like that. there is a VERY steep and distinct drop off between them chronologically
>>130479921>>130479963>>130479075>>130480650lol. I love how everyone is including different things in the list. God their discography is a mess with the old reissued eps and the bootlegs. Just give us Bocset you cowads
TH>Geogaddi>Inferno>TCH>Twoism>MHTRTC
>>130481033>>130481000this one too haha
>>130481019I think of them more as a compilation than albums, and as a two volume compilation piece I rank it where it is on the list. But yes Vol 1 is better.
>>130480974
Inferno: Tomorrow's Harvest but we actually tried to make every song as cohesive as Cold Earth and/or New Seeds
I hate how people give 1-star reviews on rym just because they’re haters.
Manifesting a shoegazy album next.
>>130481083I think no matter where someone ranks Inferno, it still ends up being the best thing they’ve ever done overall.
>>130480925kill yourself
>>130481117Honestly, yeah. I think it and Maxima are the only two releases of theirs that I actually wouldn't skip any tracks on. Even on Music, I almost always have a hard time getting through Pete Standing Alone. I mean after Olson... you gotta give me something better than THAT, boys.
>>130480987Holy filtered
>>130481117Hard agree. It’s kind of crazy. I was not expecting an album better than MHTRTC or Geogaddi but I think you’re right. It’s essentially flawless boc that feels like a pure evolution of their entire discography up to this point.
>>130481106yes please. A07 SLAPS
>>130479609I wonder if this has anything to do with the allahu akbar sample in Father and Son. Probably a stretch but still
I would've strongly preferred the bocset. Or even just reissues of Catalog 3 and Play by Numbers
Getting big video game soundtrack vibes for Hydrogen Helium Lithium Leviathan but can't place it. Anyone else?
>>130481326Dying Light
i can't believe that there are retards in this thread that seriously put inferno over MHTRTC
>>130481387retards still put Campfire over EVERYTHING else....GET R E A LEAL
>>130470330I can't believe how good this album is. First listen I thought it was decent with some stand out tracks but some weak ones that felt like filler and kitch. However, every track gets better with each listen. I'm obsessed and haven't felt this way with a new album. Closest was with TH, Syro and Exai. But Inferno is on another lever imo, even if Geogaddi and MHTRTC are masterpieces and can't really be outclassed, only time will tell how Inferno ages and if it can compete as a top 1 or 2 contender.
I REALLY WISH THAT I COULD DO THAT >>130481387ARE YOU GONNA CALL HIM A LIAR?
>>130481280I've just been resigned to the fact that cat3/numbers/acid memories/etc will never be released outside of their friends. When I first got into them like 20 years ago I just assumed they weren't even real
>>130481403it's me, i'm the retard
>>130481019>>130481048I always preferred Vol. 2 over 1. There's a bit more filler what with tracks like Mushyz or Fly in the Pool but tracks like Buckie High, Mukinabaht, Kiteracer 2, etc. make it up for it imo
>>130481435Yeah? You like Music For Pylons???
>>130481435Mukinabaht basically makes 2 for me. I like the fan video on youtube a lot. Been my alarm clock for a decade now
>Music For Pylons
whoa these uncs are funky like thelivingtombstone, on gngtrack 3 literally some FnaF ahhh shiii franyone bussin it down to this YTP ah tracks are brainrotted tho fr
>>130481387I think that's wonderful
>>130481424I got the exact opposite take, the fact we got a new album after 13 years is a great sign the bocset will come out eventually
New thread is up:>>130481603>>130481603>>130481603>>130481603>>130481603
>>130481586I don't think that stuff will come out even if we get bocset. They'll be trolls like that, or maybe they're embarassed about some of it
>>130480987A04P.C
you dont have ears if you think inferno is anywhere above last place, if you cant tell how weak and half assed it is compared to everything else theyve done, theres no hope for you. but noooo the production is so twinkly and hifi ooooo
The second half seems potentially like a subtle nod to that Cheetah EP by Aphex Twin, particularly the track CHEEETAHT7b? At least I was reminded of that track instantly. Bit of Autechre too maybe
>>130485018Talking about All Reason Departs
>>130481657>but noooo the production is so twinkly and hifi ooooothat's like why i hate it
