Listening for the first time rn. Started off pretty strong - later that fizzled, started getting a bit boring. Oh well, good background music nonetheless. BoC were always good in that regard. Campire Headphase is my fav album by them by the way, Inferno comes in 2nd or 3rd behind MHTRTC now...
Where the FUCK is Mike edition???
Just had my first listen. Easily their best and most engaging album. 9/10
>>130499303Do you reckon he has a walk-in closet just for his beanies?
why is everyone so crazy for naraka?its a good song, but not even top 10 on the album
>>130499303what if he got really fat since TH? What if an obese Mike was the guy that made Inferno
>>130499561That's how I feel about You Retreat in Time and Space, I more appreciate it from a thematic point than the actual music itself. Maybe that's cause TCH is my most played BoC album and it kind of just feels like an alright take on a TCH song. Don't get me wrong, it's very pretty and I love the first half, 2nd half is just retreading old ground. Again thematically that's cool, it's a deliberate escape into the comfort of the past before being snagged back to reality, but as a song it doesn't do a ton for me.
the avalanches just released a new single and you're still here discussing boring lofi hiphop beats

The second half of All Reason Departs seems potentially like a subtle nod to that Cheetah EP by Aphex Twin, particularly the track CHEEETAHT7b? At least I was reminded of that track instantly
>>130499756I definitely got Aphex vibes but it could be similar to a fair number of his tracks
i liked age of capricorn more when i thought the voice was saying marvellous and this will always come to be
I wish I discovered them in the early 00s instead of being late to the party. It's cool reading old interviews and articles from around the time of Geogaddi and how people recognized already back then what an influence they had on the music world
What if someone came up to you and offered you one (1) listen of Naraka on their mp3 player in exchange for fucking you in the ass in public in front of everyone? Balls touching and everything.
>>130499988I think you should take the deal anon.
>>130500168Will you take the deal with me?
Unless we get an interview this week I think it's a safe bet we're not getting any at all. TH dropped June 4th (a tuesday) and interviews a couple of days after that. It is now the week after Inferno dropped so...
>>130499581the avalanches have one good album dude
>>130500215>It is now the week after Inferno dropped so...It's only been 3 days

>>130499581I like the avalanches but this rollout has been iffy so far
>>130500741>>130500215Inferno is literally their most explicit album, what more needs to be said?
So what's the deal with the whole MBI prelude thingy people heard at the listening parties? It seems like it directly coincides with the bonus track on the flexidisk people received, or that it hints at the themes of a follow up EP or something. Am I thinking too deeply about it? The colder blue/green color palette seems like such an intentional contrast from the rest of the imagery on Inferno

>>130502506it has been special anon. Like this album probably will be, it was an amazing flourish for the board harkening back to better times, pretty cool we kept the threads going for over a month, setting its own huge fucking statement amongst the dreck that is the current music scene/this board. I'd say I'd be back for the avalanches but no seems to give a fuck this time lol. Maybe see you when the next /mucore/ band bring something else out after years and years.
>>130502554will the new dg have the same hype as inferno?
>>130502506It was fun while it lasted. And hey the album turned out great.I was here when OPN's Tranquilizer dropped last year and that was even more depressing, remembering that this board once got the video premier for an R+7 single, and then 10 years later there was just like 4 people here to talk about his new album. But this was fun. See you again in 25 years.
out of all the stuff on the album that last half of The Process got me in the feels the most. I to I think it is signifying a moment of clairty in life where you able to find a way transcend all the shit the world throws at you and compartmentalise that endless morass to fully prioritse the things that truly matter. those idle yet serene moments with family is what truly matters in life, that its what days are for. I don't know if I'll ever be able to get into that headspace bros
What is up my physical beings
>>130502554>>130502604It was a special run. The waiting and listening room generals for Inferno actually lasted over 6 weeks and there were more than 25 of them. All of them hit bump limit. It's quite obvious why Inferno generated so much hype. When you have a beloved band that is very private and mysterious, who haven't dropped an album for 13 years, and they start a cryptic promo campaign, yeah that's gonna generate a shit ton of hype.Honestly, next year, it will be 13 years since Aphex's last album, Syro. Just like Inferno, 13 years. I think if Aphex and Warp start some sort of cryptic promo campaign like they did for Inferno, the same thing will happen. Fingers crossed we get something from Aphex soon.
>>130502506>>130502554>>130502604>>130502738thank you for the company you beautiful bastards and remember: sometime in the future, you may have the opportunity to serve as a juror in a censorship case or a so-called obscenity case. it would be wise to remember that the same people who'd stop you from listening to boards of canada may be back next year to complain about a book, or even a TV program. if you could be told of what you can see or read, then it follows that you can be told what to say or think. defend your constitutionally protected rights. no one else will do it for you. thank you
>>130502738At least we've gotten a steady stream of Aphex Twin EPs over the years since then

These have been good threads, though I’ve had to be careful not to allow my profound respect for everything everyone posts here impact my perception of the album before I listened to it myself. I think You Retreat in Time and Space is a reminder that happiness can come again after the death of a loved one, you can look upon the old times and smile, the pain retreats. But it's fragile.
>>130503188There's a strong theme of death and anger at death I think in this album. There's an arc with death, rebirth, and faith and trying to find meaning. In that is faith as a cope, anger at God, rage at having someone snatched from you, nihilism and then overcoming nihilism, grief, acceptance.I need a few more months to ruminate on my ideas. I don't think I'm phrasing them well, but that's the direction my thoughts are heading.

>>130505833Using terms like “mid” and “slop” are also cliches and say nothing about the actual musical content. I also prefer Music and Geodaddi, but even those took time for me to fully appreciate. Guess I’m not dumb enough to make a snap judgment not even a week after the release.
>>130506798Honestly the issue isn’t with the chanting itself, it’s that it supplants that incredible main synth line to do nothing but repeat until the track just kind of peters out. I get that chanting isn’t really supposed to have “development” but the sample feels underutilised given the wild vocal processing elsewhere on the record.
>>130506798>>130506826filtered
+classic BOC DNA injected into a cyberpunk (solarpunk?) synthwave pastiche+hi fidelity production+great sample selection and vocal processing+cinematic sense of pacing, cohesion and atmosphere+surprising sense of lightness and humour for an album marketed as being serious and intense-Boc at their most thematically explicit - loses the abstraction and enigma of their earlier works in favour of accessibility-some sounds feel generic or underdeveloped-borders on being cheesy and heavy-handed at times
>>130506965hi fidelity production should be one of the cons desu
>>130507026Nah, I think an album like this needs to have maxed-out high resolution. It wouldn’t make sense for it to be this big, cinematic panorama if all the sounds were obscured by analog grain and tape warp. This might be the most meticulously layered BOC album yet - you wouldn’t be able to pick out so many different textures in the mix if you couldn’t hear them clearly.
>>130507026I think that lo-fi quality is kinda stale at this point. Vaporwave scraped that barrel too hard. This ain't the past any more, we're in the future, wondering why it isn't like the past.

I fucking love The Process so much
I put the new album on while working and didn't even notice it was playing until it finished. It's quite a feat for an album to have no moments that stop me in my tracks and make me pay attention.
>>130499083What are we all thinking of the bonus track?https://youtu.be/6dj0XDkPNMg
>>130502567Only if it’s good.
>>130507759 Really good. Haunting stuff. The voice in the original distorted tape says "Now with your first issue, you'll receive the exclusive flexi-hexidisc, a hexagon of sound. Six voices and music to guide your path. Subscribe today, discover the New Month's journey. Each issue brings insight into devotion and a unique exodus of voices and music to guide your path." which makes it sound like more might be coming yet
Listened to it after a day of hiatus and daily stuff.I understand now. Naraka is so perfect, and so well fit to the album. I got it's purpose and it's so accurate. Bros it's so good, it just comes up all of a sudden, literally shits in the middle of the process, drops a big one, and leaves the rest of the album stinking. It's beautiful.
>>130508008>please kiss my wife, i beg of you

>>130507942This was also the sample used in the VHS tape, I didn't think the Hexi Disc would actually be real. This could be a far reach, but picrel was also in the VHS. The lit up ones are their previous LPs, the half lit up one is Inferno (complete, but not released) and the other two dark ones are future releases.
>>130507942>>130508098So does this mean more flexi discs? is this the first tease of what will become an EP eventually?
>>130508114I hope so much for Inferno to be actually a teaser foreplay for an actual BoC sounding albumthat has the hexagon.
Deep Time into All Reason Departs is hilarious, Deep Time is probably their most introspective song ever, and it perfectly transitions into All Reason Departs which has a robot ghost voice going "THE GREAT WAR MUST BE FOUGHT"Mike definitely had fun making this. The Word Becomes The Flesh reminds me of Super Metroid and I love it.
When I put on Naraka, I pull out my cocka.
The hare krishna chant on Naraka is really filtering me every time. It's the most fucked up artistic choice on this album. Naraka pulls you in hard, then you start grooving. You're feeling it, then those inverted bass hits come, and you're like oh shit this is getting dark. Suddenly, you're jorking it slow and steady, then the first phrase hits again with some added bits, and you're about to increase your goon, then it happens. Hare Krishna. You make a weird face and you keep trying to goon, but your penis is deflating. You keep grooving but it just feels forced. "This isn't what I wanted," you tell yourself. Then it's over.
>>130502604OPN's tranq album is amazing. I completely love it. I went to the concert he did in Brooklyn with the freaky visuals and what not.For some reason The Process track on Inferno makes me think I'm listening to OPN.
I really wish they had picked this as the album art for Campfire Headphase
Alright, The album arrangement seems wrong to me.The hexi track should have been in place of Father and Son and Father and Son the bonus track instead. Naraka should be a standalone single release apart from the album. It literally causes all this whole schism because it doesn't fit into anything.
This is the best Christian album ever. The Word Became Flesh made me realize the beauty of the miracle of life and the embryo.
>>130508949is that a casette?
Boards of Canada bo-ACK!
>>130507759>>130507942Also interesting is that it only says music70 on there, not Warp. Maybe a more experimental album will be released just on their own label - maybe even as Hell Interface or something. And/or maybe with samples that Warp doesn’t want to clear.
>>130509060I agree, the focus on science made me realize how wrong Christianity is.
>>130508603>>130509060Funny how both sides can be so wrong and yet so right at the same time. I don’t think the album has any explicit commentary on religion at all, but listeners love to project onto what are essentially ambiguous aesthetic themes and iconographic motifs that can’t be reduced to religion=good/bad.
>>130509139The cult guy talking about how he loves an imaginary being more than his own flesh and blood is a pretty good reason to believe the album is highlighting how goofy religion is.

>>130509153Except the father is literally asking the son to bring the bible home with him. It’s not a total renunciation of religion, only its dogmatic and self-destructive tendencies. Let me ask you this- do you think the chanting vocals on Nakara are poking fun at new-age spirituality, or do you think (given its relatively unaltered processing compared to F&S) is treated with a level of respect and dignity?
I wonder if Mike made so much money from this that somehow it means he'll buy cool music stuff and make more albums faster

>>130509316The chants are there because they sound cool which is an implicit level of respect, what they truly mean in the abstract doesn't really matter.Christniggery doesn't really get any respect in the album because there's nothing cool to sample, the religion is a black hole of aesthetics and creativity. You can hear a hindu chant and immediately associate it with the religion but what the hell are you gonna sample from christians? Especially the worst goylem american types.
>>130509316I feel like the idea is contrast destructive lunacy with neutral lunacy, Hindus being neutral. Notice how the monotheistic religions are the most fucked up and cause the most pain to normal people.
>>130509362>what they truly mean in the abstract doesn't really matter.Agreed, but that applies to their supposed critiques of Christianity as well. >>130509371You make a good point, I think it also aplies to the machine god we hear on Prophecy. I’m still not entirely convinced tho, it’s clear that boc’s interest in religion and spirituality goes beyond simple good/bad judgements, there’s a level of engagement with the subject matter that can only come from a place of deep respect and contemplation of these traditions. It’s not just Dawkins-tier cringe tirades against spaghetti monsters

>>130511041>his cretinous cult is critiqued>well guess what YOU'RE THE CULTIST HERE!lel, the most ironic part is that you can only seem to strawman others by saying they must be as cultlike and irrational as you, you yourself are framing it as a bad thing but your cult must be the right one
>>130509038>Naraka should be a standalone single release apart from the album. It literally causes all this whole schism because it doesn't fit into anything.I almost wonder if it's a hero's journey type thing. Descended into hell and whatnot.
Made the backrooms pilgrimage, word becomes flesh is so groovy and I even had the whole theater to myself for a mini listening party>>130510833Both that and father and son are obvious callbacks to telephasic workshop

What do you think is the meaning behind the “James Barker” ship horn motif in “You retreat in time and space”?https://youtube.com/shorts/yd3hWTbE1GQ?si=4yyw7gRGzyO79MsYI have a feeling it’s a reference to this. In that sense, if I’m right, it could symbolise departure. But the way it intrudes so obviously and so disjointedly into the beautiful developing themes of the track is also so out of the norm as to require analysis. You don’t put a ship horn in the middle of that sort of thoughtful reverie for no reason. The feeling it gives me is the way that dwelling on the past can be a comforting, though sad feeling, but life happens to us regardless and there’s always going to be that awful phone call from a loved one, “so and so has cancer” or “grandma fell down today, you need to fly home immediately”. It bursts into our reflections with a brutal and rude sort of insistence in the same way that the horn motif suddenly shatters the track.
>>130511409The album promotes cuddling/murdering kittens, depending on your philosophical persuasions
>>130499083Just added this thread title and all variations to my filter. See ya.
>>130512398No, you didn't.
>>130512369There is literally nothing reminiscent of a ship horn in this track. I think your just making shit up now
>>130511124descending to hell is originally an ancient greek thing
>>1305124383:42 to 3:47 has a descending fourth that is in my opinion pretty clearly a horn, if not THE famous horn of the Great Lakes vessel Barker. Look it up, see if you agree.
>>130512438Every copy of Inferno is personalised

>>130512567>next threadAnon...
>>130512514Sounds like a growling synth to me, never thought of it as a horn. Must be a british thing.

I’m sucking a cock irl
just about finished it right now, idk, seems overall too much on the bleep bloop side, for me BOC peaks on more melodic/sampling-sided tunes, still decent, I'll need to listen to it again a few times
>>130512602How is the smell? The taste?
>>130512608>bleep bloopwhat does this even mean
>>130512579I thought so too but I was reminded of these Great Lakes freighters à la Edmund Fitzgerald. The horn is extremely similar to the sound on the track imo. The only catch is I think that the James Baker has a descending 5th and the track uses a fourth. Not that it couldn’t easily be pitched to suit the needs of the brothers.
>>130512620kinda more Aphex Twin-like vs songs like Telepath/Sundown, I like less rhythm more melody
>>130512609It smells like salty piss and tastes like rancid oatmeal
>>130512646i take you you really like tomorrows harvest then yeah?
>>130512651it's up there yes
>>130512650Praying for you Anon
>>130512651Different guy but I NEED both to work together. The absolute peak, the pinnacle, the unutterable perfect moment in all of Boards of Canada is to me the combination of Olson and Pete Standing alone. Neither track on its own has anywhere close to the combined impact. One is beat-less, with coronae of warm sounds flaring up and breaking off of it all the time. The other is very beat-driven, and the break toward the end is ecstatic.
>>130512684It's funny because I feel like this is what Geogaddi does the least well out of all of the albums. Love Geogaddi but it loses a few points for me because quite literally every single song is bookmarked on both ends by a 20 to 90 second long interlude that feels equivalent to "pausing" the music. Obviously there's still stuff playing but most of those interludes are so short that they just immediately stop the vibe and switch it kind of jarringly. The songs are great though
>>130512741Honestly the only track on Geo that I get tired of is “Rue the Whirl”. Interludes like “Smallest Weird Number” grabbed my attention so strongly when I was exposed to BoC as a young person that I think they’re the reason I got into the rest of the album in the first place.
>>130512772RTW on MHTRTC friend, its funny I love a lot of the interludes on Geogaddi I just think the pacing is really off. TH and Inferno have great pacing. and MHTRTC is lighter on the interludes anyway

This is one of my favorite albums of all time honestly just from how addicted I've been to it since release. Listening to You Retreat rn and man it never gets old. I can live here forever.
>>130499083Hit this for the first time last night, I'll def need some more listens to get some perspective cuz all BoC albums got better with time for me.Sound design is still top notch, the particular way these guys can do the lo-fi tape sound thing is just unmatched, always has been.I did get a big tired of the tribal drum thing about 3/4 through, seemed like all the big tracks had that vibe. Every time there were some sweet secret layers though that felt amazing but they kept em subtle and sparing.I'm really curious what these guys could do if they just made an ambient record, feel like it would be incredible.I feel like the record's gonna grow on me with the next few listens. Stoked for more BoC either way
I Love you Mike & Marcus. New album is a sick one.

>>1305155276? SIX?! aaaAaAAAAARGH FAGTANO! You've gone too FAR this time you bald FUCKalso>filtered by Father and Son
Pretty good though uneven album. I'd give it a low 7. Lots of moments on the album that reminded me of tracks from Shin Megami Tensei IV, GoldenEye for the N64, or the Midgar portion of Final Fantasy VII (song example: Somewhere Right Now in the Future, Blood in the Labyrinth, All Reason Departs). I think the worst moments tended to be the plunderphonic and hauntology-influenced songs which had snippets of people speaking (Father and Son). Sometimes this worked, like with The Word Becomes Flesh, which felt like it would play during a Toonami / Adult Swim bumper. Similarly, the more peaceful, traditional ambient songs didn't quite work for me (Deep Time). At over 1 hour, it is quite long, and I think BoC should have done a better job of shortening it and editing out the fodder.
>>130515665I'm not biting
>>130515663This but unironically
6 is too low, I'd give it 7 - 7.5.Four tracks that did absolutely nothing for me and I wish would be cut or replaced.>Somewhere Right Now In the Future35rtt ass formless guitar strumming time waster.>Into The Magic Land>Blood In The LabyrinthTCH but even gayer.>I Saw Through PlatoniaStinker of a finisher. The rest is decent to pretty good.
>>130515745SRNITF didn't do much for me either and I agree that Platonia should not have been the last track on the album. HOWEVER Magic Land and Labyrinth are two of the strongest tracks I URGE you to reconsider
>>130515758>I URGE you to reconsiderI've tried, just can't jam with them, sorry. Magic Land sounds like Twin Peaks inspired royalty free music for Youtube travel blogs. Blood has that fucking sitar otherwise it's feels like a TCH b-side.I wish there were more tracks like All Reason Departs that sound more like FSOL/Orb.
>>130515537I 100% agree with Fantano in that the vocal samples get a bit too much after a while. I feel this was a lot subtler in MHTRTC

I genuinely can't fathom hating Father and SonYes it's a bit youtube poopy, but so what?
>>130518095Nah, no hate, it just out of the context. It's funny, and fun yes. But really sounds like ytp. The real culprit is the naraka I believe.
>>130516704>geogaddi sounds infinitely more hi-defI love Geodaddi, probably my favourite BOC record, but nah. Inferno has a level of modern post-production polish that early BOC could only dream of. And that’s totally okay and expected. Maybe you personally prefer the more glitchy, enigmatic or obscure production style on Geodaddi, and it definitely serves the tone of the record very well. But the mix just doesn’t have the clarity and depth to it that Inferno does.
>>130518095People are such tasteless plebs that they hear YouTube poops rather than The Books-style vocal chopping. You can call it derivative or uninspired, but if you first impulse is to compare it to lolsorandum early internet brainrot it says more about you than it does BOC
>>130518095well you're onto something with the youtube poopery, but the tune underneath is also basically repetitive Twoism-era BOCshit by numbers.
>>130518218listen to the live drums during those first 45 seconds of the song, its shit like that you don't get from just anybody and absolutely elevated beyond twoism bocshit.
>>130518323i don't give give a fuck if buddy rich is live drumming the drone intro. the actual tune and melody are boring and lazy.
>>130514822I hate saying this but seems like Eoin is holding Mike back looking at this, he literally contributed to every single of the more mediocre tracks on the album, while Mike soloed all the highlights. >into the magic land - Marcus>blood in the labyrinth - Marcus>deep time - Mike>all reason departs - Marcus>arena americanada - Marcusthat's a brutal stretch, the one solo Mike track absolutely ethers the others

Part of me thinks Fantano's score has some politicking going on. He knew this album was already blowing up, and it's tracking to be their most listened to album of all time. If he rated it like a fucking 9 or something, it would actually hurt the popularity of the album because then it would be seen as overrated BECAUSE he likes it. I'm realizing that Fantano is a lot smarter than he's given credit for. He knows his influence is impactful enough to change the mythos of this band. His scoring preserves his integrity as a reviewer while also preserving Inferno's legacy as their most impactful album to date. Though it may seem counterintuitive to the average person, Fantano has simultaneously gatekept BoC and boosted their profile.Bravo, bald man.
