just a couple more weeks of these arpeggio exercises and i think i'll basically have the whole fretboard memorized i should have done this years ago
>>
>>130675441
So basically if I'm going A open chord to D a voice leading would be to choose to do a D open chord instead of jumping to the 5th fret and barring it?
Also, what if I choose a triad for D where the root isn't D but the 3rd or the fifth?
>>

>>130675990
i used voice leading a lot when i learned these drop 2 inversions to play chord melody. when i play two chords close together i choose inversions that voice lead into each other
>>
>>130676015
What does this do exactly? They're all the same chord, I was under the impression 'voice leading' is leading into the next chord in the progression
I may not be following
>>
>>130675908
Which arpeggio exercises?
>>
File: leaves.png (203 KB, 896x1158)
203 KB PNG
>>130676110
Take the first two bars of this tune. Playing chord melody, Knowing that I want to play the three intro notes, then an A-7 chord, then a D7 chord, I'll choose inversions of the A-7 and D7 so something in the A-7 is leading into the D7. C is the minor 3rd of A-7, so you can use the C to lead into the D of D7.
>>
>>130676146
To help clarify, in this case you would pick the inversion of D7 that has the D on the same string as the C you played in A-7.
>>130676131
Pick a chord progression, arpeggio up in 16th notes until you're around C6 territory, then arpeggio back down. When the chord changes, you change which notes you're arpeggiating but continue from where the last chord left you.
>>
>>130676163
since it's chord melody you'd pick an inversion of A-7 that has the C on top, since the melody is holding a C. in that case i might not voice lead on the top string. another option is the A is found in both chords so you can share that note between them
>>
it happened again. was screwing around on my guitar, went for a divebomb, and my dick got caught up in the springs. did a lot of damage, a lot of blood and pain, dick is all messed up but don't have insurance so just poured hydrogen peroxide on it and wrapped it in paper towel bandage
>>
>>130676146
Would A - A7 - G major be a voice leading?
I noticed this in the Comfortably Numb verse when I was playing earlier - or would this depend on the key?
Also, always just assumed suspended chords were to add flavor but I guess those are also voice leadings?
>>
>>130676291
>>130676146
Sorry - not A7, Asus2
>>
>>130676254
Tiny trem block, Tiny penis
>>
>>130676291
not necessarily but you can use voice leading if the same G (minor 7th) you are added to the A to make it an A7 is used in the G chord
>>
How fragile is an amp head? Could I put one in my checked baggage?
>>
>>130676302
same answer as above, a sus2 replaces the third with a second (B), so you'd need to use that B as the third of your G chord
>>
>>130676318
Looks like a normal sized block?
>>
>>130676345
Haha, no.
>>
>>130676341
shouldn't be an issue unless the baggage handlers are black
>>
>>130676343
think of it this way. a third is consonant. a second is dissonant. think of dissonance like a magnetic field. when you turn a third into a second, you are bringing the note closer to the root note. the magnetic field of the second wants to push the root note away so it becomes a third again. when you satisfy that, you are voice leading
>>
>>130676343
So that is a voice leading, no?
The common tone would be B
Unless I'm completely misunderstanding what voice leading is.
>>130676370
Leaving the above but that does make sense for suspended chords.
I've only been playing about a year but I try and learn theory alongside guitar - voice leading is new to me but I've known about sus chords for a while, I did know that suspended chords want to go back to the third to 'complete' the chord but in relation to voice leading I'm not sure which is correct.
>>
It would be so fucking funny if jim lil was trolling. Nobody is double checking his work so he could be.
>>
>>130676435
the important thing is it's the same B. you can't just look up a Asus2 and a G in a chord diagram book and automatically get voice leading, because the chords exist in multiple places on the neck and arrange the notes differently. the G in your G chord might not use the same G as the G in your Asus2 chord, it might be an octave up or an octave down. it might be the right note, but on the wrong string, so you are getting the sound of voice leading without the fingering benefit
>>
>>130676235
This is the type of shit people who cant play write. you're thinking too much
>>
>>130676485
Sorry but let me roll it back for a second: what is the purpose of voice leading? Is it both common tones in the same octave & fingering?
>>
>>130676509
this is literally required understanding to play chord melody. otherwise you're trial and erroring and taking 10 times as long as you need to
>>
>>130676515
two things. music is all about tension and resolution. voice leading adds more of that. voice leading also helps you transition between chords more comfortably. often the latter is the main reason you use it and the former is a positive side effect of that
>>
>>130676485
>>130676515
Would it be safe to think as voice leadings as singable melodies I.E. you're going from A to B in the same octave vs 2 octaves higher? If so, it seems like more of a pop genre thing because a lot of rock music or whatever goes all over the fretboard, the music isn't a direct extension of the vocals but is more in the background if that makes sense
>>
>>130676549
thinking of it in terms of multiple vocalists singing in harmony is a great way to wrap your head around it. voice leading is arranging your chords so that each vocalist isn't jumping around all the time. you can't really get it perfect on guitar but a little goes a long way
>>
>>130676521
or just have melodic sense to you dumb ape.
>>
>>130676572
great, you can hear it in your head then. this is how you translate that onto a fretboard
>>
i didnt mean to post twice now i cant delete posts lol
>>
>>130676538
>often the latter is the main reason you use it and the former is a positive side effect of that
That makes sense. I'm watching this video to better understand it but you've been a big help
>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xM08fcohsGk

>>130676568
With the tension & resolution part, it seems like that's only really useful for solo acoustic singer-songwriters so there's a tight bridge between the guitar & vocals.
>>
>>130676593
yes chord melody tends to be a solo performance style and uses a lot of voice leading. it can get lost in a band. but the grooviest chord progressions use voice leading
>>
>>130676593
listen to like joe pass wes montgomery larry carlton they use a lot of voice leading with no vocals
>>
>>130676598
Would you say that bass guitar would do the 'voice leading' for the rhythm guitar or is a question of "maybe" depending on how the bass guitar changes chords based on the current chord being played?
>>
>>130676621
sometimes the bass will play a leading tone on the last beat of the measure but voice leading is specifically referring to an individual musician playing chords
>>
>>130676621
when you overthink you hinder your writing

Ok I think I FINALLY figured out what I want on the board. The compressor makes fitting everything hard and flipping some pedals sideways works best. I’ve got a way fancier compressor (Empress) but it’s just too complicated for the simple compression I need and the cheap two knob MXR is just idiot proof for my retard brain. I don’t use a compressor often but when I want one I hate having to have to throw it in. I really only use it with my Rickenbackers or sometimes on a Strat bridge, but I play my Rickenbackers often enough that having to force a compressor in gets annoying

House to myself all day today and tomorrow which means recording with no interruptions he’ll yeah plus plenty of time for phoneposting voca goof off shitposts he WILL yeah stinky playin stinky singing but guitar is fun he’ll yeah

True but I like understanding why things sound good.
I'm not sure I'd ever use chord melody at least, I don't like vocal melodies being played on instruments in songs though I think "Babe I'm gonna leave you" has a chord melody and I like that song.
>>130676631
Thanks. Think I understand it now. I can see how I might want to use voice leading to create smooth chord progressions but as for chord melody I don't think I'd ever use that.

you can also think of it like editing video. each chord is a camera shot. you have to transition from one chord to another, you have to transition from one shot to another. leading tones are like using a fade beween scenes. too much is tacky. but if you don't use it at all the final product looks amateurish

That's actually a different technique called raking.
For electric you really want to keep your right hand glued slightly above the bridge like 90% of the time, even when you're not chugging. This is a pretty good lesson about it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJIRmnpTFRc

There are exceptions to this rule like strumming and weird fingerstyle/tapping shit though.

then make a conscious effort to change that, engage your mind and your body and start consuming and retaining proper information about your hobby. it does take a long time but a year is a long time, and to go a year with no gains tells me you're not actually moving towards any kind of goal you've set. start with something simple like learning 3 new chords a day, learn them properly and the intervals too.

tube screamer is not the right overdrive for a jazz chorus. tube screamer is for two things:
>tighten loose amp (like an orange) for metal

if you want a "second channel" for your jazz chorus, using a tube screamer will make that "channel" way middier than your clean. use something flat like a blues driver

That's true. There's just nothing special about the fact that their maximum output voltage is limited by the supply voltage. Any sonic differences you may have perceived come down to differences in EQ and speaker; when matched, you won't be able to tell the difference.

It's just about the information conveyed through the music, the intervals, notes whatever. People stress about guitar amps, pedals, microphones, recording techniques but here's what they need to realize:
1. EVH on a Squier through a CRATE sounds better than you with a whatever is expensive and nice
2. People would rather listen to Van Halen recorded on a microcassette recorder than your band recorded on top of the line pro tools whatever shit with a pro engineer

Yeah, it's your prerogative but you're still fucking wrong. Amps, pedals, audiophile mentality is the wrong path. You're on the wrong path. Correct your course.

I can't wait for the video on pickups.

Spoiler:
>Pickup construction makes a difference; humbuckers with the coils next to one another have comb filter characteristics due to interference between the signals from the two coils.
>Pickup position along the string makes a major difference.
>Number of windings makes a difference in volume and inductance, the latter of which does make a difference in tone, but that equation also includes the total capacitance of everything between the pickup and the first buffer stage. You can achieve the same effect as a high inductance coil by adding different values of capacitor between output and ground. You can lower the effective inductance of a humbucker by connecting its coils in parallel instead of in series, or by disconnecting one of its coils. There is a large variance in handwound pickups.
>How the windings are arranged makes a difference in inductance; see previous point.
>Distance from the string makes a difference but it's mostly volume.
>Magnet material makes a minor difference, but it's mostly a difference volume. There are various types even when you're just talking about e.g. Alnico 5, there is little information on which type you're getting when buying, and there are large tolerances. The magnets can partially demagnetize when shipped improperly. Ceramic magnets work fine.
>Extreme bends cause volume drops in pickups with individual pole pieces; rails fix this.
>There is no meaningful sonic difference between a split humbucker and a single coil at the same position.
>Metal pickup covers can be an issue, depending on the conductivity of the material. High conductivity allows eddy currents to form, which can induce out-of-phase currents in the pickup windings, which can reduce treble response significantly.
>Conductor material and diameter, insulation material and thickness and the colour of the plastic have no effect on tone. You don't need to pay $500 for DiMarzios with silver wire in them.
>>
>>130680111
>bespoke ICs vs off-the-shelf components
>>
Source is the German youtube channel I keep linking, I can't recommend it enough.

Regarding active pickups: A passive pickup, guitar wiring, cable and first buffer stage (OD/dist/comp/fuzz) act as a second-order low pass filter. Typical values for the cutoff frequency with passive pickups can be as low as a few 100 Hz. The preamp just acts as the first buffer stage, taking the guitar cable and electronics out of the equation. Only the preamp's input capacitance is relevant for the LPF at that point, which shifts the LPF's resonance peak up into the 10 kHz range. So you're basically getting the highest-fidelity guitar signal possible.
If you want a "vintage tone" from active pickups, put a resonant LPF after it (i.e. EQ pedal before first OD/dist/fuzz/comp, choose some treble frequency from which to drop -6dB per octave, and add a resonance peak of a few dB at the cutoff frequency). For even better results, calculate the cutoff of pickup+preamp from their inductance and input capacitance, respectively, and use a high shelf from that frequency onwards instead of continuing the -6dB/oct drop.
This EQ trick also works with passives. Determine LPF cutoff freq, put an EQ before the first stage of distortion, and add a high or low shelf at that frequency as desired.

It makes clean sounds louder and have more sustain. It's needed in country and funk or if you're a delay fag. It also smooths out your volume by making dynamic inconsistencies sound more even. The modern players like the instagram japanese guy or the polyphia guys compress the fuck out of their guitars for the fast percussive clean parts so that fast clean playing sounds more even and less sloppy. To be fair this is also why country players do it with their chicken pickin.

a lot of queef-quaffers will moan about pickup voicings, but fundamentally it comes down to magnet type and amount of wraps, maybe minorly wrap symmetry to a point. Notaluthier on youtube played a broken humbucker then re-wound the second coil and put it back and it sounded slightly "fuller" while losing the delicate higher frequencies which is essentially what buckers are made to do- combine two anti-phases to get a solid, hum-free signal.
