I can't believe /porg/ is dead again...
Is Fear Inocolum the worst Tool album of all time?
>>130714890It's difficult to name a Tool album that's good period.
>>130714890Their only good album was their first
>>130714886Start a thread about once per week. Also, the image is a shitty OP. Funny, but very niche and wouldn't grab anybody not looking for /prog/
>>130653877i am once again asking for buff shirtless pics of robert to prove his claim. deadlifting 264 pounds and benching 165 pounds at his age? i simply don't believe it.
>>130716882
>>130716882he doesn't lift that much all at once.
>>130716882What I find even more impressive is his daily playthrough of Fracture.
I'm loving my journey going through Van Der Graaf Generator and Peter Hammill at the moment. Just finished Still Life, glorious album.
the /prog/ secret handshake
>>130723789now that the dust has finally settled, how does /prog/ feel about anika?https://youtu.be/tsAgGYM8_-A
>>130724183She's real good.
>>130724183She's a woman.
>>130724183It doesn't matter who took Neil's place, it's an insulting cash grab and I'm surprised to see no one cares. Geddy and Alex are great, but Neil is the heart and driving force of RUSH, and I say that as someone who doesn't typically care about drums much. If it weren't for Neil they wouldn't have gone anywhere, they'd probably stick to making shitty Canadian Zeppelin albums for an amount of time before fading into obscurity. Now that I think about it, selecting a young up-and-coming female drummer was probably done very intently to avoid criticism.
>>130721580based. how long did it take you to get into vdgg/solo?
>>130725475Yes, a very skilled woman.
>>130725828>they'd probably stick to making shitty Canadian Zeppelin albumsThe rift between Geddy and Alex who were deeply into prog rock and John Rutsy who was more of a conventional buttrock guy was a big reason for his departure. They were already itching to get more progressive and complicated and Neil was their ticket. They had already written some of the music for Fly By Night before he joined, and one of the songs they jammed on at Neil's audition was an early sketch of what became Anthem.
>>130725828funny you call alex and geddy cynical for picking anika when your entire post is just cynical whining. maybe you do things for impure reasons and just assume that's how everyone works.if you've actually read any of neil's lyrics you'd know he'd be the last person to get sentimental or precious (or accuse them of greed in your case) about them getting a new drummer. he'd know that alex and geddy worked their entire lives to make these songs and would want to perform them for people.oh i forgot. alex and geddy are just nobodies that wanted to make zeppelin rip off albums until neil showed up. you're a retard.
>>130726231Nah, you're wrong, sorry to have offended you though
>>130726285hilarious that you come out so strong only to immediately surrender. the perfect combination of ignorant, opinionated and cowardly.
>>130726350I'm not going argue against your points when they're mostly stemming from weak psychoanalysis
>>130726380isn't that what you were doing with geddy and alex about the anika hire? or was that strong psychoanalysis, professor?
>>130726400I'd consider it more of a possibility within their marketing tactics, typically hate to be cynical about that sort of stuff but it's a part of the industry at the day.
>>130726452you just say things and look around confused when people ask what the fuck you're even talking about. then, eventually, you just spew out cliches to justify your ignorance. you're somehow even dumber than i thought. maybe you're pretending. not gonna stick around to find out.
>>130726523All that similarly all sounds like a cliche coming from a fanboy who I offended to an unreasonable degree, which is what really happened here. I stand by original point. Glad I got to see Rush when they were still actually Rush and in their prime. Have a good day chap.
Is it really that good?
>>130726675phil doesn't get enough credit for giving life support to genesis but ripples is the one highlight on here, the rest is whatever
>>130726675Steve wrote the best song on the record. Even Tony thought so. Did they think about that on their next album? No and it cost them dearly.
>>130726675>be me, teenager getting into prog rock>boomer dad has expansive vinyl collection but was never a proghead>this and duke are the only genesis records he has >ignore them as they're collins era and figure they can't be much better than 'we can't dance' tier>later find out it was still prog and not pop quite yet, the title track was even originally written in 1972>excited i might have overlooked greatness, i finally give it a listen after years of dismissing it>wasn't missing out on much"Good" is a perfect word for it, it's no Foxtrot or Pound
>>130726790Trvke this thing gets mad overrated by Philfags. It's good but it's not even remotely close to the 5 before it.
>>130725828>no one caresYes, it's a cashgrab, anyone who looked at the ticket prices can attest to that. The reason why no one cares is because no one sees this as Rush continuing on without Neil; they're tastefully paying tribute to him and their careers as a whole.>>130726211It's easy to mistake Neil for being responsible for their shift towards prog rock if you don't know the full story, he instantly offered much better drumming/lyricism and all of the sudden the songs were grander in concept and had uncommon time signatures even on Fly By Night. But Geddy and Alex were prog fans and it's what they wanted to do, it was just a matter of getting a drummer to work alongside them with that goal in mind. Rusty held them back as much as Neil pushed them forward.
WE DID IT BOYShttps://www.nytimes.com/games/connections
do Rush even really count as a prog band? the only keyboards are played with FEET
When's prog making a mainstream comeback again like in the 2000s?
>>130729206>Genesis>progLolPeople remember them more as a pop rock act
>>130729770There's got to be a modernized idea of what prog is for it to truly make a comeback. It actually wouldn't take much, just a certain compositional perspective. Lots of emo and the like already has weird time signatures, tricky playing, etc. but being essentially punk music holds it in a certain form factor. This is true even in longer songs. In order to make a modern prog trend happen, I think a few bands like that would have to start constructing denser songs with more harmonic complexity. That's not to say there aren't bands that don't have those attributes, what I'm saying is, they don't have a progfag's perspective.
>>130729770Did it? Honestly the more modern prog rock bands which have followed suit with the 70s (e.g. Spock's Beard) seems pointless, while bands that innovated like Porcupine Tree or The Mars Volta are amazing. Then there's the prog adjacent groups like Coheed and Muse which are mainstream. That seems to be the key to going mainstream as a modern prog rock group, have pop appeal like Muse does. When I think of successful prog rock groups from around the 2010s onward I can't think of any, Haken is only popular within the prog niche. Polyphia? They're talented but their music is fucking gay, not surprised Steve Vai collaborated with them as he is also an overrated guitarist himself - babby's first shredder.
as a lifelong prog listener, i think i don't give a single fuck about weird time signatures.for me the richness of instrumentation (keyboards/synths/mellotron) is a lot more important
>>130730913Prog for me isn't about a checklist of cliches, it's just about making cool and interesting music.
>>130730913I think the odd time signatures detract if they're not done right, Michael Romeo has a good philosophy on this in saying that odd time signatures shouldn't take away from the appeal of the music and alienate casual listeners.
>>130731297Why is Symphony X so boring then
>>130731297best example of this is Apocalypse in 9/8 segment. yes it the famous example of weird time signature, but it wasn't intellectualized beforehand, it was all about feel.
>>130731414It's funny because when I heard him say that in an interview, I thought to myself: 'his music is pretty inaccessible despite this approach.' it took me longer to get into Symphony X than any other band, and by a wide margin.
>>130731414They are Dream Theater but not gay
>>130730120King Gizzard are the most innovative 2010s prog band
>>130730120>Porcupine Tree>innovateummm... okay?
>>130731741Say that to Steven Wilson's face not online and see what happens
>>130731640A young Aussie band inspired by KGLW (and Canterbury?) seem to be catching on. Their new single from last month already has 615K views and 4500+ comments.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZZaYkOG1Zk
>>130732099Yeah, I had this on repeat a couple of weeks ago. But I need to hear more of them. Judging by this song alone, they sound (and look) too much like a ripoff. Great tune though.
Just... wow...
>>130732099that was funreally took off at the solos sections, didn't expect that
>>130732492I feel an urge to smokeā¦
>>130731845If I ever am face to face with Steven Wilson, I will do so. I simply can't imagine a situation where I would be.
>>130736368Can you imagine an apple
>>130736383Yes. But I do not live in the same country as him. I would not pay to see a concert of his, let alone get whatever VIP package which would result in some face time with him. I don't go out, so even if he did come to my neck of the woods (he has in the past), it would be very unlikely for me to run into him out and about. And even if I did, I would not be expecting to see him, so I doubt I'd recognize him.
Acknowledge Kansas
>>130736600I acknowledge they sucked.
