This thread is for the discussion of music in the Western (European) classical tradition, as well as classical instrument-playing.
>How do I get into classical?

What do anons think about Jesus Christ Superstar? Sure it's a rock opera but it's scored for a symphony orchestra and imo a pretty decent Passion.

best String Quintets in the Classical era and some of the best Quartets too.
A few great violin + piano duet sonatas.
Clarinet Quintet and Concerto are masterpieces.
And of course the best piano concertos ever.
>>
>>130719331
Schubert > Beethoven > Mozart > Boccherini > Haydn > rest.
Of course, you can omit the first two if you think they're romantic (I wouldn't necessarily disagree), but Mozart is still GOATed.
>>
>>130719369
>best String Quintets
doubt.jpg
>>
>>130719374
Yeah, I'd omit those two.
>>
Why do concertos from Beethoven onwards look like this?
>allegro: 20 minutes
>andante: 8 minutes
>rondo: 8 minutes
Symphonies have some variation in lenght. Why are first movements in concertos always so bloated?
>>
>>130719549
Is that a bad thing? More is more.
>>
>>130719573
But why do symphonies not have this nearly as much? Usually the movements are all 10-13 minutes save for the scherzo
>>
>>130719549
That's not even true btw. Name 10 concertos that do this? Besides Chopin, Brahms and Tchaikovsky, most romantic concertos are of usual length. Can't really think of many that have 20 minutes long 1st movement.
>>
>>130719584
Symphonies are usually longer so I don't know what you're even talking about desu. The first movements may rarely be long because of how exposition repeat functions in concerto form, but I can't really verify your claim, symphonies are usually longer, including first movements.
>>
>>130719584
And one more thing I'd add: Beethoven famously shifted the weight of symphonies to the finales, but concertos remained in three-movements so the weight still had to be carried by the first movement, combined with the double exposition of concertos it made some first movements quite long.
>>
What are some composers who aren't Mahler or Bruckner who wrote 20+ minute movements in their symphonies?
>>
>>130719746
Beethoven
Schostakovich
Petterson
Górecki
Vaughan Williams
Villa-Lobos
Schnittke
Norgard
Myaskovsky
Prokofiev
Rachmaninoff
Glière
Krenek
Langgaard
Lloyd
Saint-Saens
Davies
>>
>>130719799
I mean consistently. I know plenty of composers have hour long one-offs

I've been going crazy all afternoon: I have this piece stuck in my head but I cannot for the life of me recall where or how it's called. it has dark sounding strings at the start kinda going like: https://voca.ro/1r9Bn9Wc7sxy

the athmosphere sounds like https://youtu.be/YMrSPOWrYGA I think but with slower tempo and more sparse composition? at least the start which is what I remember.

>>
>>130722956
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J138w8wAWjE
>>
>>130722915
I'm not practical about classical music, so I doubt it's something not "mainstream". more than the notes, I'm fairly sure of the cadence being right, a more staccato hit followed by sustained note, and repeats

>>130722928
no, it's definetely not a reinterpretation of dance of knights..
>>
>>130722986
That's just the modernist-soviet aesthetic. They're all different but yes they use that same aesthetic. You want a composer whose symphonies actually all sound the same, try Myaskovsky with his 25 symphonies!
