ObservationAmongst most musicians, seeking specific and often expensive equipment is a highly personal journey reserved for extremely experienced players who are performing at a professional level and can actually extract the tonal and intonation nuances from say, a $6000 clarinet or a piano that costs more than the average /gg/ poster's house.Amongst electric guitarists, it is simply a quest to make the instrument not sound like absolute fucking dog shit in isolation (no mic, no mix) and finally play something pleasant sounding without a full band covering up the electric guitars usual sterility and harshness - and rather than being as limitless as the musicians skill, the pursuit of better shit hits a price:performance ceiling relatively early and every player benefits except people who only, only ever use their gear to play with a band. Thus the best guitarists openly mock and flex upon the worst by playing on squiers and solid state amp sims, whilst beginners and amateurs buy gibsons and tube amps just so their bedroom solos sound less grating.

People that buy expensive instruments are either sponsored by that company and didn’t pay for it or are middling musicians who bought one because their favorite player was the former. Actual gigging musicians make very little money and if they do decent they have severe drug problems and don’t have any leftover to spend on nice things that would just get pawned or stolen anyway. It’s why you see really good players with entry level name brand instruments.
Can anyone recommend me some guitarists to listen to for inspiration? I'm a few months in, and I'm hitting the point where I want to get some parts swapped out. But is soldering in new pickups so hard? It's a strat. I can even do it under my kitchen vent hood. And setup on a hardtail bridge seems super easy. I think I'd feel impotent if I didn't do this myself.

Stratocaster. End of.
>>130786325Learn to actually play before doing anything like that. You’re going to sound like shit, spend money and time swapping pickups, and still sound like shit. Just play your guitar. Use your tone knobs on your guitar and the knobs on your amp to tweak your sound if needed. Change how hard you pick or change the thickness or material of your picks to get a different sound. Don’t worry about the relatively minuscule differences in sound that pickups make when you’re not even good enough to take advantage of those differences. I’m not saying changing pickups isn’t beneficial, I’m saying there are tons of other easier things that are more beneficial to a beginner that should be explored before jumping to swapping pickups.

>>130785072Accurate. Electric guitarists that aren’t in bands are just the poorer version of luxury watch "people". This instrument is infested with people whose real passion is the idea of being a guitarist and having good taste in guitars. Blues lawyers all the way down. Protip: if you aren’t in a band and don’t have a solo project, and dont consider yourself a student with aspirations to do one of those, please switch instrumentsSaxophone, flute, bass, and piano/keyboard are very easy for adults to learn. Excellent jazz pianists have started as late as their 30s.
>>130789743>Saxophone, flute, bass, and piano/keyboardBut it's gonna be the exact same problem if you play those by yourself without a band or a project
>>130789757All of those are acceptable hobby instruments to play solo on. Electric guitar is genuinely inexcusable without being in a band. It sounds bad. Solo sax sounds beautiful on its own. Any “real” instrument will also get you in and out of larger bands with whole sections of them whenever you want. Electric guitar is for rock and there is typically no more than 2 guitarists.Playing electric without a band is like playing acoustic with neither a singing voice nor classical training. A waste of time, and a direct contradiction of the instruments purpose.

>>130789840A solo sax gets old fast, it's just one melodic line with nothing under it. Drone instruments like hurdy-gurdy or bagpipes actually hold up better solo since they've got that constant drone note running underneath, gives way more body than just melody alone. That said acoustic guitar + singing is probably the best overall solo combo, guitar can do rhythm, harmony and melody all at once so it just has way more going on than a single-line instrument ever could.
Recently bought a Bass VI to play as a bass for a family band and play as a guitar later down the road. I have zero prior experience. I think I need an audio interface and/or an amp. >>130794151>Is the neck and body really made out of carbon fiber?Yes, but I'd wager its probably a fairly low percentage of carbon and mostly resin. I saw a dude torture test one going from a freezer for a day directly into the sun after and it just needed a slight adjustment to the truss rod.

>>130794243I see, now Aristides comes to mind with their moulds and hollow guitars. I was thinking of those sleek and light frames on expensive bicycles that seemed metallic to me.>>130794637That's cool. You mentioned the high E had terrible sustain? Do you think it's fixable with better fretwork or did it seem like the guitar's inherent acoustic property, like its dead/resonant note or being hollowed out on some of the body. My strat with a blocked hard tail rings louder than my solidbody superstrat with FR but the latter has way more sustain once amplified (hotter pickups helped as well ofc). What I'm curious is that do you think it has some bones of being a great guitar once it's modded up and shieet (pickup swap/refret, etc)

>>130793933Try and see if there are any pedals that can do an equal function to another pedal, then choose the pedal that does more. For Example:<GE-7/BP-1w<Metal Muff/Other Muffs, Metal ZOne<XS-100/Blue Box<OS-2/DS-1<Tube Screamer Deluxe/BD-2<FZ-2/Superfuzz<CF-7/Nano Clone<SY-200/SY-1The GX-100 should be able to cover most BOSS drive pedals in the pile too.The RE-202 & GX-100 are also pretty good for any Delays & Reverbs. Maybe sell the DD-8 & Rainbow Machine for a secondhand Eventide H9 Max (gen 1)Also if you'd like to, try making a mini row of the really small pedals just for use as embellishments during a solo, etc. (like the EP Booster & Phase 95)
>>130786325As long as they're noiseless, it's a-go-go. I'd recommend a Gilmour switch too (a.k.a. the killer switch- of Teles)
>>130794733>You mentioned the high E had terrible sustain? No no, it actually has great sustain, the problem was entirely the software. The threshold dial sets when the onboard amp/speaker cuts off to try to mitigate unwanted feedback. It was set too low by default so despite the string still vibrating the sound just cuts off. It took a little bit to find the sweet spot but now it's fine. And if you plug it in none of that shit matters.Could it ever be a great guitar? I dunno, it seems pretty good so far but having a resin fretboard makes me question the longevity compared to wood. I also have no idea what the wiring is like to swap out pickups which is part of why I went with the JT model for the better humbuckers.I think it's great for what it is and for what I paid, which was $338.

>>130794832Ive been trying different configurations all night. I think I'm getting really close to optimizing this shit. Right now I'm considering switching the DD8 for the grand canyon because i like the looper on the grand canyon (it's 16 min long) But I like the utility of the DD8 more for delays cause the switch is easier to tap tempo and it's simpler to set up. If im playing live and something gets switched on the canyon i could be in trouble. I could also ditch the chorus factory, to add the grand canyon, or, what is more likely, I might switch the chorus factory for another distortion, maybe the metal zone or fz2 or keeley darkside or one of the muffs. I kind of want a good metal sound but im gonna try the darkside first rn because that covers multiple things like you were saying. Thanks for the serious answer also and thanks everyone else for the other answers.

>>130795471Uh, the space echo?
>>130795017This thing
>>130795627I know. I fucking love that thing and been using it for years. that's what i mean when i had to soul search. Like the echo is cool but it's big. By putting the grand canyon in it's place, i gain more types of delays, but also gain a looper taht i really love, it's 16 minutes and has a knob that fades out your overdubs. And having the re-202 off the board means i can use it on my other gear too, that's anther plus. I really only need the 4 boss pedals and the wah to archive regular guitar stuff, so the pigtronix pedals, looper and modulation side of the darkside all are there for basically like a desert island version of my bigger set up. Part of me thinks i would benefit from trading the canyon for the space echo, because the echo has those presets, but the utility of the looper is too seductive. I can always make the signal chain modular when im at home and add off of this board anyway.

>>130795918I don't think the F series has ARE (torrification) aging iirc. When I bought my LS-TA, I literally tried every acoustic in the store, cheap and expensive... I had actually intended on getting a super cheap yammy, like under $500. But the SOUND of the LS-TA left me scratching my head, and I couldn't believe it sounded better than the Martins/Taylors that were 3x the price and the common denominator became the ARE. None of the other guitars at that guitar center had it... it was the only one in the store at the time that did. And the cheaper yamaha's didn't compare either. So for me, its solid top/back/sides + ARE. IF the guitar doesn't have those things, its just not gonna sound anywere near as good. The added selling point of the ARE for me also is that I'm in a bunch of random weird climates with unpredictable humidity... and the ARE makes the guitar far more stable, and this is true. I've had my martin/taylor/guild/taka w/me and they are dogshit on the road, constantly needing to be tuned. I kept this thing in its hardshell case for over a month and it stays in tune. I used to also have a cheaper laminate martin, one of those black X-series and it straight up fell apart bc of the humidity. My takamine went RIP bc it fell off top bunk... one of the braces inside came off. The guild had a nasty gash on it when I bought it, which only worsened on the road. I eventualy sold martin/taylor after I'd had the yammy long enough to trust the Chinese build... its been stable as a rock. I just don't think a none ARE guitar will do that

anon who bought the cort b5 element bass here, i like it and it feels great to play but i kind of regret not splurging a bit more for something like an ibanez BTB bass for the better electronics, or something with a real passive/active switch instead of just eq bypass. ive been playing with the EQ on my amp and it sounds pretty good now and not as honky as it was. i think the natural bright sound of the bass leads to more dissonance than i'd like, and it lowers the clarity of each note so differentiating C# on the A string from the open D string can be a bit unclear for example. probably gonna keep it for a few years though while i get used to a 5 string bass.
