Surprisingly she actually holds back for the Brenda Lee cover so it's not the worst thing there, although the "mistakes are part of being young" line coming from a 36 year old mom doesn't exactly sound believable. "I Walk The Line" though, that's straight out of the bowels of Hell.

this is a typical Columbia LP of the period (think the Doris Day Christmas album) with that super-crystalline sound so you think you have the Metropolitan in your living room. i mean, LPs back then were to a large extent tech demos to showcase stereo equipment.

Steve and Eydie had their last run of pop hits in 64, after which the change to the Clive Davis management at CBS next year relegated them to just albums. As was typically the case, these were more aimed at kids (hence the pseudo-girl group sound here) than the adult audience their albums were marketed to.

>"Am I Blue?" is a 1929 song composed by Harry Akst (music) and Grant Clarke (lyrics),[1] and published by M. Witmark & Sons. It was featured in four films that year, most notably with Ethel Waters in the movie On With the Show.[citation needed][a] It has become a standard covered by numerous artists. As a work from 1929 with its copyright renewed, it entered the public domain on January 1, 2025.

That cannot have been the case as it predated the 1976 copyright act, so it would have been public domain in 1985 if it was renewed in the 50s, because back then it was 28+28 years.

Columbia-era Aretha wasn't quite there yet despite her youthful enthusiasm on here. It was an example of what happens when a major label run by ASCAP people tries to do R&B, which means they don't entirely grasp the format and it seems they were pushing her more as a new, young Dinah Washington.

The fact that the Colonel and RCA chose to release full soundtrack albums for the instantly forgettable Kissin’ Cousins and Roustabout but not the far more successful and iconic Viva Las Vegas just speaks to how badly they were managing his career by that point. Incidentally around the same time RCA began releasing some of his old album cuts as singles to compensate for the lack of decent new material he was recording. One such release of Ain’t That Loving You Baby, a 1950s outtake from his last pre-army session, ended up outselling all of his other records in 1964 just by actually being listenable.

if you will see how next year RCA dug "Crying in the Chapel" an unused recording from 1960 out of the can and released it. It got to #1 but it sounded old-fashioned by 65 given how quickly music was evolving back then.

those Elvis movies were just background noise for jocks to fuck their high school cheerleader girlfriend to at the drive-in theater

Cuckgau didn't agree with Jerry Wexler's claim that Burke was the greatest soul singer ever and rather took the guy to be a consummate journeyman.

Cute but he was always really an AC singer and seems to have been mainly intended as a younger Johnny Mathis for the new decade. Epic was Columbia's long-time label for what they considered "weirdo" acts that didn't fit on the main label, until being sold to Sony in the late 80s.

Oh boy here's a piece of bad news. This Mexican dipshit and his obnoxious pop folk that occupied the charts for about six years.

For a supposed soul man he wasn't much of a vocal presence and leaned too much into MOR.

Indiana Governor Matthew E. Welsh declares the song "Louie Louie" by The Kingsmen pornographic. He requests that the Indiana Broadcasters Association ban the record. Governor Welsh claimed that hearing the song made his "ears tingle". Publisher Max Firetag offers $1,000 to anyone that can find anything "suggestive" in the song's lyrics.

The Raiders are in their third year with CBS, none of their singles have charted or charted very low because Mitch Miller won't promote them. Nothing is going to change until he's shown the door next year.

>Concert promoters in Mississippi, South Carolina, and Alabama, who were unaware that Burke was an African American, accidentally booked him to sing at Ku Klux Klan picnics and rallies, with up to 30,000 hooded Klansmen in attendance. Burke recalled: "Way down in the South somewhere, I showed up and the promoter said to me, "Is Solomon Burke here yet?" I said, "Yeah, I'm right here." His eyes grow wide and he walks away. The guy comes back with the sheriff and he says, "Boy, don't play games. Show me some I.D." So he looks at it and pulls the promoter aside and says, "You got a problem. You can't let him go out there." So they called the doctor and had him cover my face in bandages and made it look like I had an accident. That's how I performed that night."

i don't think he actually signed them anyway it was probably John Hammond or somebody else. we all know he didn't think much of Dylan and that Hammond signed him while Miller was out of town for the weekend.

Terry Melcher was put in charge of rock releases at the label since 62 and PRATR became his pets. They were based at CBS's West Coast studio in Los Angeles not the East Coast studio in NYC that Miller mostly controlled. However, yes, he did continue to block them from being promoted and they had to wait until late in 65 to have charting hits. Other than that their rock roster at this point was limited to a couple of novelty surf and hot rod acts.

Etta laying down the realness. This is also the end of her Argo run and it's three years without any hits on (black) radio until she re-emerges on Cadet. She'll never have Aretha's crossover appeal to whites though.

Boy can you believe there's some people out there who think Liberace is a queer? Just because a man is well dressed and has a little flair...the nerve! Why he is just fantastic isn't he darlings?

He got kind of a bad rap and was lumped in as an early 60s teen idol which is unfair, he started as a rock guy and was friends with Dylan--he only went pop to make money.

Gordy knew exactly what he had which was his dream crossover girl group and that Ross had the ideal pop voice.
