When napster came around and I got into "classic rock" like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath. I got into the heavier stuff like Judas Priest, Metallica, Megadeth. There was something badass about it. When I was 16 a girl gave me a bunch of burnt CDs including Skinless, Candlemass, Exodus, and some other bands. Eventually I got into black metal more than anything. In my late teens early 20s I had some friends that were in local bands. I went to a lot of shows back then and had long hair, battle jacket, all that. Then life got busy and I cut the hair, got a career, largely stopped listening to most of it. I went to a few big shows like Black Sabbath the End tour in 2016. After Ozzy died last year it really hit me in the feels and I started listening to all my favorite old metal bands. I discovered tons of new music too and I've been to 8 shows in the past year.I think what's attractive about metal is embracing the dark and feral aspects of humanity, things that we have to contain. There's also this boyish goofiness that is fun. I'd say I'm pretty well versed in the basics of subgenres and their history, but I'm not an expert on any.
