Justin is a much better guitar player with much better equipment versus his 20s, and he brought along a second guitarist to emulate the overdubbing. The speakers at this venue were much louder and higher quality than what I have at home. Arboretum is specifically played differently live, as well (compare the Peel Sessions or Live Leaves version to NPI's version). They can extend the bridge as long as they want and color it with other textures/effects. The harmonic part, where they shut it off with a bassy string, hits so much harder, for instance. also justin played something slightly different at MY show and i swear it's never been replicated elsewhere and this is the source of my unwound schizo obsession

Sam Jayne (Lync) played a Sunn Beta Lead. Distortion was built in to these amps. Vintage Sunn stuff is from the 70's, so few artists use them as road rigs nowadays. Shearling and Boris come to mind. Justin's rig looks a lot different nowadays, but still gets to the ideal of what those tones should be. With backline gear changing constantly on overseas tour dates, Justin's settled for using fuzz (Hizumitas/Dude Incredible), overdrive (Halberd/super lead overdrive), RAT-style distortion (Life Pedal v3) etc. Pic is of Scott's pedalboard, all pretty affordable gear besides the mysterious black box (probably a RAT circuit or something). The vocals on Unwound always perplexed me. They should sound whiney but they really don't, they convey frustration and righteous defiance really well. Don't know if i'd categorize them as Emo or what. Kudos to Justin Trosper for figuring how to balance that out. Not to go ''thing, Japan'' here but that usually is managed very well by japanese bands, they sound more passionate than straight up complainsome in their music, but these guys are actually way up there with them in a subgenre of indie rock that's primed for fagging it out.

The lack of range also makes it an everyman's sort of voice. No one needs to strain themselves to sing Devoid or Lifetime Achievement Award.Also why I can't wrap my head around Cursive.
