I need to create a structured practice routine so I don't get overwhelmed between trying to get better at guitar & write my own stuff, playing other songs just doesn't cut it.
Here's what I have so far, would appreciate constructive criticism:
>15 minute scale warmup: playing scale & saying the notes
>15 minutes metronome: subdivisons, strumming & picking while changing chords
Other than that I'm not really sure what to do...I want to get better at strumming & fingerpicking but I don't know any 'catch-all' exercises to help with that besides just doing it.

This is a really good idea, I've been meaning to get better at vocals too. Should I use a pitch detector or just try and harmonize?

I was gifted an electric guitar, but I don't have an amp. I want to give playing it a shot, but I don't want to spend a bunch of money upfront. What amp should I get for like £50? I've done some research but I don't know if I should get a amp-amp a headphone amp or this "Positive Grid Spark GO" thing (which kinda looks like AI junk, but people recommend it?)

Get something like pic related which can be plugged into any speakers you have. The cheapest amp amp I would get is a £270 Boss Katana Gen 3 and I still don't really want one of those.
>>
>>131383299
this is literally what Rickenbacker and sometimes Fender and Gibson did in the 50s/60s
>>
>>131383373
On the other hand if he's never played an electric guitar some kind of plug and play practice amp would be way less of a turn off than autistically fiddling with modeler/multi-fx patches.
>>
>>131383388
I would probably be pretty happy with a Fender Champion II 50 watt clean plus pedals but that's just me. If I wanted the sound of a 5150 I would not be happy with a cheap combo amp.

The general category is called a multi-effects pedal. Whichever one you end up getting make sure you download the app for your phone or PC to control it and they can usually double as an audio interface as well.
>>
>>131382988
if you don't live with/near anyone that would be upset by the noise then a real amp is the eay to go
if you have to play quietly then get a headphone one
(a lot of real amps have a headphone jack anyway but I personally like not being tethered)
>>

>>
MAKE WAY MAKE WAY WE GOT A RETARD COMING THROUGH WITH SOMETHING TO SAY
>>
When you're writing songs, do you listen to music in your genre for inspiration or do you avoid listening to music entirely in order to not accidentally plagiarize something?
>>
>>131384026
if simply listening to music you enjoy means you start plagiarizing then you have bigger problems. like lack of creativity or originality. you need input to turn into output. if your output looks the same as your input, the stuff in between (you) isn't working
>>
>>131384074
Either that, or your pool of references isn't big enough to synthesize something new.
It's easy to tell when a band has one single inspiration they want to emulate, i.e. Greta Van Fleet to Led Zep.
>>
>>131384074
All art is derivative, it's all been done before, so whether something influences you consciously or subconsciously stop worrying about how original something is and just make it
>>
>>131384189
even if you copy a melody note for note the rest of the song will likely be different enough that no one will notice or care. if it's a good melody why not steal it
>>
>>131384189
This makes sense because hendrix whole persona and everything he is known for was stolen from someone else
>>
>>131384305
and he died like 100 years ago and you're still talking about him
>>
>>131384305
from whom?
>>
>>131384200
>even if you copy a melody note for note the rest of the song will likely be different enough
Yeah. Something as simple as the gear you own, the amp settings you like to use or the way you strum a chord progression is enough to add your own unique flair to it
>>
>>131384474
covering a song with different gear isn't enough. gear has never been the solution to any problem besides not getting enough attention on the internet

>listen to music in your genre for inspiration
It's an absolute necessity. You should also listen to really bad albums in the genre you want to play, because it gives you a well-rounded understanding of what works and what doesn't so you can avoid those same pitfalls.
Lately I've made a point of scouring Metallum for atrocious reviews, and some of these albums are genuinely valuable as a masterclass of what not to do.
>>
>>131384675
good advice, it also gives you confidence because surely you can't make anything worse (you can but still it will give you confidence)
>>
>>131384675
>this song sucks, they should have done THIS instead

The jews at rolling stone have done a good job keeping their golem alive for 100 years
>>
>>131384026
I haven't written anything yet but I feel I can chime in.
I listen to genres I like but I still broaden my horizons. (I would've never listened to Post Malone before I picked up a guitar over a year ago for example)
I take notes on things I like or ideas I get from listening to music, something can be as simple as:
>this tempo works really well with the tone of this song I'm listening to
to:
>Delayed vocals behind the main one here in this song with a different tone would sound great
Really just broaden your horizons, find music in different genres you like and take inspiration.
The other anon is correct about Greta van Fleet being a Zeppelin clone & they don't even have the dignity to admit it though I think they've changed a lot since their early days.
Mick Ronson on Ziggy Stardust got me into guitar but listening to the Wall by Pink Floyd not too long ago is what got me into fingerpicking and I think a lot of my first songs will be acoustic only with *maybe* some electric guitar as texture since I absolutely love fingerpicking and it would be easier to mix & arrange; I think I'm better on acoustic fingerpicking anyway since I can't really play that fast on guitar with a pick though I'm working on it since I want to do high energy stuff at some point.

Speaking of DAWs which one should I start on, I tried REAPER and I really don't like it, I want something more standard.
I'd like to use Logic Pro but I'd have to buy a Mac.
I'd like something that's easy to learn but has good samples to use & works well with recording live instruments.

bass warble anon here
did a full setup / tear down of my bass today. everything to fender spec. no new strings yet or intonation (for obvious reason). the warble mysteriously vanished, i am quite surprised. it only goes +-5 cents now vs +-45 cents. im not sure if it will stay like this but interesting to note.
>removed foam under neck pickup because i needed a little more clearance to bring neck pick-up down
>brought bridge pickup up
i think it was 2.8mm bass side and 2mm treble side. i checked the truss rod which did appear somewhere between .012 and .018. i didnt have the right hex so i just left it alone for now. >redid the string action, again to fender spec and then use a radius gauge to set the a and d and then tweaked them slightly to taste.
>in order to access neck pickup i removed all strings
in doing this I noticed when i put the e string back on it acted strange. usually i can find the tone for the open string easily but i was struggling, i even went as high as A before checking against the real A string and realizing something was wrong and i was too high. much more tension on the e string this time, brought it down, no issues.
im gonna play it a couple of days and see if it comes back, i have to replace all the pots i fucked up since im wired directly to the output jack for now, but im very happy to have made some progress

Lol they are equal. The only reason they get rejected is because they look ugly and don't want to pay for a hooker even though being desperate enough.
There's no such thing as a "advanced " incel

No problem. The feel and dynamics are there and the phrasing is ripping it. Smooth out those highs and you got it all.

Pickup height will cause that warble sound.

Twisted string is the most bullshit old wives tale I’ve ever heard. I’ve been stringing my basses the same way since the 90s. I’ve never encountered this.

Yes with the humbucker. Plus you have single coil tones. It has locking tuners for a quick change to heavier strings. Adjustable strat type bridge saddles. It's pretty comfy to play. I bought one as a back up for my American strat

I don’t use FaceBerg. I’m sitting at home while my kids are in bed and I’m about to fuck my wife. Relax nephew, your time is coming if you can stop being so high strung.
>>131387083
I had a 64 or 65? musicmaster that the previous owner modded to have a Gibson humbucker in the neck. It had the 22.5 inch scale. I sold it because at the time the refret job in the early 2000s wasn’t worth it.

He doesn’t get the point. The gear you’re buying now to chase a dream that will never come to fruition will be worth a lot more down the road.
>>131387200
I’m not 36. I’m in my 40s lil guy. Hold on to your gear. That’s the lesson.

For the record we were trading $82 or less and a case of natty light for the same peavey tube amps some anon was posting earlier in the early 2000s.

thats almost a glarry
>>
>>131387306
Yes. That’s the point I’m trying to make. This obscure gear that’s a fad right now isn’t s going to be worth something down the road. Youre going to enjoy it for 20 years and some nostalgic dipshit will pay you a good deal for it. I bought a whole set of Morley pedals that all sounded like shit for almost nothing. I sold each one for more than I bought the lot for. The only one I couldn’t sell for a a double of a distortion pedal that’s 18 volts.
>>
>>131387325
I can get 400 glarrys with the money in my account ;^)
>>

mg300mkii because it's the cheapest one that runs NAM A2 natively but I never even tried that feature because I was happy enough with the included amp models. I just bought another multi for $50 from aliexpress but haven't tried it yet.

I hate that fuckin guitar. My grandpa mismanaged his finances into the ground and was passing out a wad of benjamins from his sock drawer like 12 hours before he died. I already maxed out my roth that year so I just drove to GC and picked out the first 1200 dollar gibson I saw.

Unironically not a bad feeling guitar, 7/10 playability. Not pictured is a bonamassa 335 im working on, a Gretch, and an epi 12

Thinking of starting on a new Les Paul Special double cut kit. What color would you do? Thinking of a doghair finish with red grain filler but that might give early 2000s buttrock vibes. Cherry and TV Yellow are kind of played out for that shape desu.
