Remember when people acted like this was a good, memorable, "new classic" album? And now no one gives a shit.

People do that with a half dozen new woman pop albums a year now. The new ones push out the old ones

Still is. Zoomies not caring about it because it's not black music doesn't change the fact that it's a classic.

I think at least 80% of the indie hispter crowd fell for poptimism around that time in 2015. And it's understandable why. The whole indie scene online has slowly moved into pop for years at that time. But before 2015 it was still mostly only acceptable to listen to alternative and indie versions of pop like Iamamiwhoami, Grimes, Purity Ring, Chvrches, and all those alt indie pop girls. At one point, when real radio pop albums like Emotion (and Lana Del Rey, Dua Lipa ...) got suddenly praised by indie journalists the whole facade fell and for a few years radio pop was the new big thing that was cool to like. It was cool because it wasn't cool for so long, the real indie was suddenly pop while old indie was dusty, uncool and boring. Thankfully we have moved past this again now and I feel like we have slightly escaped the indie curator tastmaker bullshit with the death of monoculture.

I do think this is probably the first example of poptimism that I ever noticed. I remember being surprised that I had friends praising the new album by the Call Me Maybe girl, checked it out figuring it must have some cool/weird prod or something but it was pretty straight pop. There were pop-adjacent albums from around this time that worked on me, I loved KKB, that Solange album was good etc, but this one felt to me like everybody was pretending, I still don't really get it lol

i think Lorde's Pure Heroine laid the groundwork for poptimism

dont get me wrong I like some of that stuff too, but this is just one tiny step away from straight up poptimism. As I said poptimism was a pretty natural development in that cultural enviornment. Pop music is undeniably fun in a senseless fun easily accessible melody + beat kind of way (see KBB). Indie culture for a big part only survived on the whole feeling of being alternative thus cool and hip. That crowd still liked their music to be catchy though, The Strokes were catchy af. And through the late 2000s/early 2010s indie music shifted more and more into catchiness and pop. Be it the super catchy indie pop of an MGMT, or later the electronic version of an Iamamiwhoami and Grimes (or KBB!). So as the feeling of guitar driven indie rock being alternative culture fell apart, it was just one step away from disregarding old dusty white-male guitar dadrock indie entirely for just straight up radio pop (& hip hop which is also pop). And a few years later when this got boring we then got Hyperpop & rage rap to switch things up again.
