Started my ifr training a couple weeks back. It's pretty interesting so far. Did "my" first instrument approach as well. I say first when in reality, I flew, the instructor did coms and kept me where I needed to be with verbal instruction. I'm still trying to get over chasing my speed, heading, and altitude. Doesn't help I switched from a C152 to a P28-160 for IFR.

Sounds like you need to work on mastering the trim to make your life easy
>>
>>2040835
You're completely right. As we were flying I was getting used to it and trimming better. I was surprised how much trim a PA28 needs. However the trim wheel on the floor I can just spin with my hand is much easier than a console mounted one.
>>
>>2040836
If you plan on flying more complex or bigger planes with only yoke-mounted trim it’s good to get used to. I still prefer a manual trim wheel, it’s much easier to fine tune.
>>
>>2040838
I was loving the mighty Beech 1900 with a manual trim wheel that was always easy to use and faster than the electric trim that was a shittier way to move the same trim wheel.
>>
>>2040838
When I move onto the G1000 equipped C172s I'll have to use the electric trim on the yoke. For now I'm enjoying the wheel and how easy it is to get it just right.
>>
>>2040870
G1000 equipped C172s still have a manual trim wheel from the factory
>>
>>2040871
You are correct. These ones have been fitted with an electric one since they have an auto pilot. They are IFR trainers. I'm not flying them yet since they are more expensive and I still need to get the basics of IFR down.

post more big daddy AA so I can dream of flow since United won't hire me because I have a penis that is only attracted to biological females
>>
>>2040999
AAnon here, whats your experience like? unless you're a complete retard, skip the flow by flying heavies for a year. One of the AA formulas for hiring is +1k TPIC and a hundred hours heavy time. I also have a degree, yeah it matters.
>>
>>2041019

>skip the flow by flying heavies for a year.
no way. I know someone who left here to go fly cargo heavies for that exact reason, the 777 type. He went to WIA and was told he needs TPIC, which will be years before he can upgrade at his cargo carrier. the Delta recruiter even told him that it would have been more valuable if he had just stayed at the regionals and upgraded.
>>
>>2041043
I mean, I can only stand by myself and the guys I know in a similar boat, but we all had over 1k TPIC and heavy SIC. My TPIC was all Part 135 prop, and a few other guys were in the same boat. Your buddy at WIA (never heard of it) should've got the TPIC before blasting off. You absolutely should be able to skip the flow, but the question is, do you want to? There are no guarantees in life, you already know that.
>>
>>2041047
>You absolutely should be able to skip the flow
you are already lost in the times. That was so 2023. 2025 is not the same. nobody is bypassing flow anymore.

Did two mire instrument approaches this week. Third flight in that plane. The flying part felt good having the plane do exactly what I wanted it to do. Still wrapping my mind around decoding plates quickly and understanding the communications flow though.

That comes with time, and honestly government plates aren’t very good compared with Jepp plates.
>communications flow
What do you mean?
>>
>>2041165
What to ask for, what they mean when they give me instructions beyond basic shit like heading, altitude, and a squawk. I think being able to understand all the data on the plates will help me understand what ATC is telling me and what they expect me to do.
I've heard the FAA plates are getting better in that they've been slowly changing to become very similar to Jepps offering.
>>
>>2041166
It will obviously get easier with experience, but also recognize that a lot of the communications during instrument training ops require more coordination than in the actual IFR environment. Self vectors, how the approach terminates, multiple different approaches to the same airport, this stuff is unusual during an actual IFR flight. Honestly >90% of the time you’re doing a visual approach on an IFR flight anyways. Once you’ve gotten to the point where you can almost fly the plane hands-off and brief reasonably quick it really frees up your workload to see the big picture. Once you step back and get some situational awareness it all becomes pretty intuitive.

Is dating a female pilot a bad idea? My heart wants her so bad but dating a women that spends extended time alone with other men away from home seems like an easy way to get cucked
>>
>>2041575
Yes it's a bad idea, but if she makes your heart throb, shoot your shot. Keep in mind, if you're planning to tie her down one day, she may not be willing to pop kids out at home like a good wife, so be prepared for that. Date a pilot over a fag attendant every day of the week.

>>
>>2042155
before IP and copyright ruined everything you had inter generational building. One person created the rocket propulsion engine, another person came along and fine tuned it, another decided they could actually make it more efficient by adding some doodad mechanisms. Eventually you get this masterpiece through trial and error. Now you can't make shit because its locked behind patent walls and heavy licensing fees.

I just flew with a female FO last trip who was going on a rant to me about all the female pilot influencers we have, and how they love getting all the attention. She told me that she never gets hit on or flited with because she doesn't seek attention but then said "You know I wish sometimes I would get hit on, because it feels very validating and good". She is married.
>>
If you want a committed relationship with a pilot male or female you should understand that they won’t be faithful. You can either bring this up explicitly with them and allow it in some sort of ENM thing, or just turn a blind eye. The latter honestly works better as long as they don’t bring something home Mr. Clean won’t wipe off.
>>
I solo'd for the first time this week. I dont think I did that good of a job and all the progress I made on my landings seemed to disappear during it. I thought soloing would give me a big confidence boost that I could complete the program, but I just now feel even worse about myself. sigh...
>>
>>2042853

>>
>>2042178
>before IP and copyright ruined everything
You don't know what copyright actually is. I'm not even going to bother explaining this to you because your misuse of the term "copyright" is more or less in-line with midwits on R*dit
>>
>>2042872
Isn't international better schedule? You have more days off? Or is this not true
>>
>>2042881
southwest on avg has the most days off out of all the us airlines iirc, they're continental.
international guys have large blocks of time off- so say they have like 14 in a given month, half or more of them will be in a row- at the cost of being gone for around that same amount of time aswell.
compared to southwest, jetblue, frontier, etc. where the default schedules have you home more often, or ofc you can bid for day trips if you want. then you have allegiant who gets you home pretty much every night.
that or with any airline, even regionals, you could just do as op says and bid reserve and hope you don't get called. i remember a delta guy posting about doing that, dude worked so little he joked about his neighbors wondering if he was unemployed

>>
What is it like to takeoff in the flight deck of a jet for the first time
>>
>>2043419
According to who? That sounds like something that gets memed at a Unite Aviate school or something. AA is by and far the best of the big 3 to get a job with right now, best seniority movement by miles and best opportunity for upgrades. >>2043420 is right, AA has the smallest widebody fleet and, despite having the largest domestic network, has the smallest international network. That said, there's more to work than the route network, and AA has the fewest trannies and homosexuals out of the big 3, and that makes life bearable.
>>
>>2043447
Interesting. Do you think it will still be best place for upgrading in five years or so? If you live in between JFK and PHL could you fly out of both places
>>
>>2043451
Looking at the current mandatory retirements, it's approx 500 or more pilots a year through 2034, and AA has been sitting around 15-16k as a pilot group as of late. There are better retirement comparisons out there, but I like where the AA pilot group is going, retirement wise. The truth is, I have no idea where AA will be in 5-30 years time, but for me, I'm in the "make my money asap" mindset in case any cyclical black swans eat my ass, at work or at home. If you're looking for those kinds of opportunities, AA is the best today, and probably for the next 10 years. There are surely better writeups out there with actual numbers, but this is the way it goes. On the flip side, and obviously not the big 3, Southwest is by far the worst place to go for an upgrade, timewise. That's not a change either, they've stayed consistent on that.

Apparently they took off mid field instead of taxiing to the end of the runway for a full length takeoff. From the video I saw I'm guessing they didn't have enough speed, tried to put in flaps to gain speed but killed lift doing that and couldn't speed up enough in time to not find the ground.

In a tricycle gear airplane and as long as you have the correct inputs there is literally nothing that can go wrong in a crosswind landing that cannot be solved by going around.

Just keep center line then once you're in ground effect put in the correction to align while you're waiting to touch down. As you learn though it would be better to put that correction in earlier.

Younger pilot group on average owing to when their big growth spurt was. They hired relatively young compared to their competitors and they hired consistently for the last 20 years. There is no big pilot retirement bubble there for at least a decade, though if you're on the list there now you will be the benefactor of a lot of movement in the future.

Delta and United are much more limited in this respect, while American will front load that movement and then slow (relatively speaking) because of their current hiring demographic and how old the top of the list is now. Southwest would be a great place to get hired in your 30s right now whereas if you showed up at Delta today at 35 you would never crack top 15%. Two things improve a career, growth and attrition and the growth has slowed across the board and the attrition is built in at certain carriers.

I am just an American jabroni with zero flight time or experience. How, where, and what do I have to do to become a commercial pilot? I know there are like part 141 and 61 schools, but not much else or even the major differences between the two other than 141 is the more common route.
>>
>>2045660
if you don't have rich parents best course is to save the around $20k for the private license then finance (loan) all the other ratings you'll need
then time building, then regional airlines, etc.
you can get this from a youtube video
because of the monetary investment you have to know that this is 100% what you want to do and can't treat it as just another venture in your life

part 141 you can get a license in 35 hours while 61 you need 40 hours. Unless you have experience operating a boat, heavy machinery, or a lot of sim time with radio experience in my opinion it will definitely take over 40 hours anyway so keep that in mind. 141 has a structured and FAA approved structured syllabus, while 61 you go at your own pace and do whatever. At our 141 we have specific lessons with particular criteria in each of them. 141 is also more expensive. However since I am retarded my 141 basically became a 61 because we need to repeat lessons and it took me a little while to figure out the traffic pattern. In my defense its a busy airspace and frequently position #4 or #5 in the sequence which takes some time to develop situational awareness (at least for me because Im retarded).

There is a lot of information that you need to know, so having a high IQ will only take you so far in contrast to discipline and commitment. I would say in terms of intellect you need to be able to pass a physics 101 course and be able to read through regulations without getting your brain melted. It is a low bar but for people today you never know. However as a low time pilot around 55 hours, the biggest skill to have in my opinion is thinking in multiple future timelines, and having the discipline to prepare beforehand. You should take a discovery flight to see if you would enjoy it.

Part 141 is shit, and retarded. No one gets a Private in 40 hours, for sure not in 35. There's some use for an Instrument rating due to hours saved, but not for all people. Commercial is pants on head retarded. 120 hours with a 141 school (plus mandatory ground school) vs 20 hours of Part 61 training. The only other tangible benefit is if you go to a 141 school with self examining authority, otherwise it's trash. The only common 141 benefit isn't the 141 itself, it's that the schools often help with financing.

Fuck Part 141
>>

Narrowbody life ain't great, but at least it ain't the RJ life, nor the domestic freight dawg life. I'm in my 20s and hold within the top 10% in my bid status. The natural evolution of the spoiled faggot flying in his late teens/early 20s, is the jaded faggot living the good life (me). While I don't care for my work, it is simply the best thing I could possibly ever do with my life. Make the big bucks doing something I'm good at, no calls from my boss, no supervision, highly trusted, not a 9-5 five day a week gig (has its pluses and minuses). I just show up at the jet, and operate it. That's the gig. I'm trying to make my money before my airline furloughs or goes bankrupt.

Currently thinking about buying a plane (I hate flying) to see if I could learn to like flying again. Wife doesn't hate the idea, so I might have to go balls deep on a plane in the next 6 months.

>>
>16-18 degrees is critical angle of attack in skyhawk
>pulling 25 degrees and still no stall
How are you supposed to power on stall these niggas
>>
>>2047384
Angle of attack and your current pitch are not the same thing. Angle of attack refers to the difference between the angle of the incoming air and the chord line of the wing. It can happen at any pitch angle.
I've had trouble doing a power on stall in a C152 one time since it was a chilly day and I was by myself. It would just keep climbing at full deflection. A power on stall you can reduce throttle to about 60% of full an it still counts as a power on stall.
>>
>>2047385
I also sometimes get nervous about spins with the power on, even though I am with a instructor too.
>>
>>2047386
Keep your right rudder in just not too much. Chair fly spins, make it second nature. Power off, full rudder opposite direction of spin, briefly push the nose down to break the stall, release rudder gently once spinning stops while leveling and applying power again. It happens fast however the average trainer plane wants to recover especially cessnas.

You know it’s funny. The zoomers are literal NPCs. They all have the exact same story. Early 20s, went fast track through ATP or mommy paid for UND or ERAU. FO is their first real job of their life besides CFI. They ALL have a pilot boyfriend, usually a captain. Sometimes it’s an FO who also happened to be their CFI when they were in training. They all have big egos and get really emotional if they don’t grease landings. One of them once was having ok landings the whole trip, but no greasers. On her last landing she didn’t grease it again and she started crying say she “NEEDS” a smoother landing because “I work so hard”. Oh, they all have @pilot.[insert first name] accounts. All of them.

I’ve flown with a millennial female FO and that was a night and day difference. She was much more tolerable

Anyone know if those College flight programs are worth it? Around me there isn't any shortage of them (Ontario) and they all promise shit like a job interview with a regional airline. I went to UND, and because the can[c]uk airlines are all shit pay, with high hiring standards, a few Canadians stayed in the US under teacher Visas and taught the high level courses like initial CFI, etc getting hours until a Canadian regional finally would hire them. Keep in mind, these dudes were students who stayed on as CFIs, not off the street CFI hires. Plus, because they aren't American, they often taught the aerobatic stuff because they're all skinny.

There's not a fleet/kind of flying that has worse dudes than the others, but if a guy is hung up on his old rank or responsibility, they always faggots. Yeah, we're glorified bus drivers making bank now, who fucking cares lawl.

and who'll pick up the pieces after they get passed on everything for being passable enough and they fly well according to le hecking regulations and shit but the moment some kind of in-flight emergency or contingency happens and they become entirely useless owing due to a very obvious general sex difference in stress responses that are not sex-specific but very sex-correlated.

Yes, but that's not executed like you'd think. The best pilots overstate their humility before shrugging off their abilities. That's confidence, pretending to be a shrimp amongst giants. Aside from that, keep in mind that women are retarded, and you can be confident one moment and then sobbing on the floor the next. Estrogen is a hell of a drug.

Gyros are more a silly thing to take short VFR flights in usually very close to the airport. A normal plane can travel across the country.

Looking at Thomas Edison State it looks like they accept ratings as credits and if I transfer my community college credits I would only need about 30 credits to get a Bachelors. Is this correct? Because if so seems like the easiest way to get that resume checkmark for airlines without having to study some basketweaving shit Ill forget in 10 years.
>>
>>2049051
I did that through Liberty University, it was extremely easy, They gave me around 55 credits for having my ATP, I transferred in some credits from community college and then i just did the required credits they needed. Never had to study a single thing.

yes. Just everything has to be done by midnight on sunday each week. But all the coursework is just modules. Usually a weekly quiz that was always a joke. I can't understate how easy LU was. When I say I NEVER had to study for anything, I mean it.

Look at it this way. When I did community college, my GPA was like 2.5. When I graduated from LU, my GPA was 3.94. I finished my degree while I was flying at the regional too. It was that easy

I've been given the keys to go to our practice area to solo. Been practicing my steep turns and ground reference. Reference are pretty simple now. Just keep track of the wind and altitude. Steep turns can be a bit tricky, all of a sudden my altitude can drop off a cliff. I add like two or three swipes of trim and it helps immensely. However, the caveat is that the rollout is harder to manage. Ill have to fight the yoke a bit and usually Ill gain more altitude than I want or roll out past 10 degrees. It turns out that looking outside the majority of the time actually does improve your performance. My landing was also shit today but thankfully my instructor wasnt there to see it.
>>
>>2049424
Keep practicing. Be sure to still fly with your instructor regularly so you don't build any bad habits.
Venturing a guess, you're not adding enough back pressure when you roll into the turn. Remember when you are turning you are exchanging vertical lift for horizontal lift. Back pressure assists in negating that.
The way I was taught a steep turn was get yourself setup in level flight. Pick your distant mountain or whatever you're going to use to know you have made your turn. Bump the throttle by 100 and a swipe of the trim up and roll in. While you roll out from the turn push on the yoke to prevent yourself from ballooning then roll into the next turn. Don't forget your rudder.
For sure looking outside with occasional glances at your altitude and speed are what makes this maneuver easier. Also look for what screws on the cowl line up with the horizon while you're at a full 45, makes it easier to align if you know when you have something to reference.

Its not a good sign. The fact you cheated doesn't bode well, and the fact you couldn't put in the effort to get through those classes is a bad sign. You have no idea what youre getting yourself into if an intro comp sci class was too much work and commitment for you.
>>
>>2049361
You don't need a degree to work at a regional or ULCC, you effectively need a degree to work at a Legacy. Doing an online degree while flying at a regional is a smart thing to do, especially while Legacy hiring is slow and there's opportunity to grow where you're planted.
>>
I've read through alot of the new 700 page MOSAIC document, and I think this'll be a giant deal to expand pilots ability to fly under GA with additional categories and classes. So now, instead of having to do a DPE paid add-on for a VFR only class, like a glider, you can do a Sport pilot Proficiency check and now get endorsed for life. This was possible before, but this now opens all aircraft that fit the applicable sport limitations as opposed to factory made LSAs which are now effectively obsolete. And now Sport pilots can fly at night, which was the only significant restriction (IMO) over a PPL. Plus you can add on a Sport CFI category/class rating the same way. I'm hoping my local Glider school starts doing Sport Proficiency checks as soon as mosaic is effective.

The last few CFIs I knew that got CJOs and class dates were cadets. Among them:
>A woman who prop struck an airplane.
>A man who would piss his pants doing stalls.
>A man who thought CFI was too dangerous bought hours instead (all VFR XC).
>A man with six check ride failures.
>A woman with a green card.
None of them had college education and got in at minimums. All had sub 50% pass rate for their students. Regional hiring is a joke.
>>
>>2050101
they're mostly hiring cadets right now to clean up from what i hear, and all other hiring is slow on all levels. i believe it's not gonna be until 2030 onward that hiring will open up again, maybe the '30s will be a good decade for hiring, knowing how cyclical things are

Consider this: you're at the whim of students, you may not get any money for an entire day spent at the airport if the weather, maintenance etc don't cooperate or a student cancels. Pulling these long days for months to years endlessly ain't fun. Consider that there's the 1500 hour finish line, and then the industry slows and SkyPest won't hire, unless you sign a 5 year contract and still wait 6-24 months for a class date. It's like a swing shift shit tier job, but without a guarantee you'll be paid. Big note, there's alot of ways to skin the cat of CFIing, some are salaried, some are not. Some schools have rest/duty rules, some are to the Part 61/91 limit. There's alot of variation.

so now southwest is totally gummed up. DEN base is kicking people out to accommodate for the new redeyes they're implementing, and in addition to that, the famous "3 on 4 off" average schedule may become less common or a thing of the past
there's very little seniority movement and they haven't been hiring for a while now
now this probably bodes well for people who are just starting training now or within the next couple years, as this all points to them really opening up seniority movement and hiring years down the line (especially when retirements start lighting up in the 2030s) but for all the guys who just got in or have been there and aren't very senior, they're fucked for at least a couple years now

By a wide margin too. Anything and everything is on the table so long as it fits under the CFI class you're applying under, usually Airplane Single Engine. Expect to fail it and pay out the ass to take it. CFI add ons can be tough, or they can be a regular exercise in checkride bs but not a stumbling block.

>even if you pay ppl out of pocket you'll still need to finance at least 60-70k for all other ratings
>hiring market is shit now, no telling if it'll open up to healthy levels
>even cfis can't get jobs now
>there's a huge backlog of cfis, students, and people at regionals for probably at least two more years or more
>imagine getting into all that debt just to be SOL or stuck as a cfi for too long
>pay as you go is only feasible if you're early 20s / have nothing else going on in life and don't care about timelines/getting a house etc.
vros i think i'm gonna hang it up. i could spend $5k (i have literally five times that right now) to get my flight dispatcher training and certification and then get on track to six figs within like 10 years without no debt to my name (outside of my college debt i guess). only thing that sucks is relocating is basically mandatory so i'd have to be deliberate about my career path.
the financial aspect of flight training is just prohibitive. i love aviation and do want a career in it, but being a pilot really seems to be a country club thing. i know my story is the same as countless other people's- so many people i tell about my intention to try flight training say they wanted to be a pilot, but the cost is too much for their life. at least there's another way i guess....
>>
>>2051111
to add to this, some guy i spoke with that goes to the flight school i'd been planning on has been at it since 2023. he's 89k in the hole right now- left his previous career and everything. is married, etc. i don't want to be in a situation like that.
>>
>>2051111
additional additional note- when i say cfis can't get jobs, i mean people can't get jobs as cfis after they finish their cfi ratings
>>
>>2051111
the point you're making is right, but consider this. If ever there was a "right time" to start as a pilot, now is a more ideal time than others, as you won't be playing musical CFIs when your CFI this week suddenly quits and fucks off to skkkywest. Student and DPE backlog is reduced, as every other student is also getting cold feet. Schools are begging for students, as opposed to students begging to get a slot at a flight school. I think going to get a dispatcher cert is a very good idea, especially if you can do so out of pocket. You may consider applying to ATC whenever the next hiring round is (idk, I don't follow it).

If anything, you should consider a PPL now, and even if you decide to do flight training and finance it all, don't waste time on CFI certs, stop at Commercial ASEL+AMEL. Definitely I like your dispatcher plan.
>>
>>2051128
that's something i thought about, seeing as cfi certs can wring you dry of funds at the end. i know a guy looking at wheels up and they pay well and have good qol, but i believe their mins are up and may require some turbine time (i don't remember)
fundamentally it comes down to me being 26 and not entirely interested spending the next like decaide-ish of my life scrambling to make enough to juggle my debts and hope i get a good amount of hrs, hired when i hit mins, etc.
i might give it another year to see how things move. maybe next august or so i'll make my final decision
>>
>>2051129
like I said, there's nothing unreasonable about what you're saying. I think there's alot of value in a Dispatcher cert + PPL, especially if it's all out of pocket.
>>
>>2051130
true. if anything then to at least actually be a pilot and rent planes to fly for fun or something
>>
>>2051132
the fact is, until you hold a PPL (or Sport/Recreational), you don't have a good ability to judge your ability to succeed in flying, as well as your ability to tolerate training/checking bullshit.
>>
>>2051133
yeah. i wouldn't want to hit a brick wall of asinine checkrides like people say the cfi rides are

I think something else worth considering if you don't have flight training debt is that non-airline flying jobs become more of a career option. if you have huge debt, you're constantly under pressure to advance and try to maximize income. If you don't have the debt, that job ferrying around or that 135 or whatever home-every-night gig becomes pretty damn enticing, depending on their scheduling and exactly how much they pay with reference to the city's CoL.
>>
>>2051144
I'll have to disagree. Money is a big motivator, but as a debt free from day 1 aviator, my biggest motivator is the quality of life you get from getting a Big 3 job. And it was a grind to get there, but it's well worth it. There's a sales pitch that goes with the "home every night" pitch, but the hidden truth is you're getting bent over 14 hours, 5-6 days a week, every week at your 'home every night' 135 job. Being senior in domicile at the big 3 is the real goal, because I'm home most nights.
>>
>>2051145
That's fair, but in the case of someone time conscious, they may not be privy to the idea of committing to the airlines from day 1 because it can take a long time trying to pay as you go. What I'm describing is a career shift. Like the flight dispatcher, making a bunch of money (perhaps six figs after like 5 years in the industry or somethin) or an EMS or whatever getting their ratings for fun- PPL, then they want instrument, then they realize they can afford commercial single and multi- then getting a job offer for something at some point, that sort of thing.

Depends on what part of your training your in. I use flight plan go. For my PPC, I used my phone for that. I switched over to an 11" ipad for my ifr training. Still using flight plan go as I refuse to pay a subscription. It works just fine. Although a small tablet might be a bit easier. I mount mine to the yoke while I would mount my phone to the window.
