And so the KCATA is now demanding that Gladstone pays $200k per year for the bus system. Gladstone doesn't want to do this because it means they'll have to tax their citizens more, many of whom don't ride the bus. The result? The bus system now doesn't have any stops in Gladstone. You can't get on the bus or off the bus in Gladstone, even though it drives through the area on the same route. This is happening in other municipalities here like Raytown and Belton and elsewhere. They make the busses free, but then demand that these other places pay hundreds of thousands for the privilege of bus service. That's been one downside. Now that the bus is free, the network isn't as extensive as it used to be.

>>2056050I've taken the Lake Shore Limited line, which runs from Chicago to NYC and Boston-- though it's been 4-5 years. It's not fancy. The cars were old and ugly but otherwise clean and spacious. Dining options weren't great but I'd often just bring a sandwich. It's rarely crowded. Often don't even need to share a double seat. It's just slow. It's like a 10 hour trip from Rochester to Boston (6 hour drive by car, though traffic in Sturbridge can slow you down substantially). Never had any problems with vagrants/bums/etc. On at least two occasions there were Mennonite families sharing a car with me. Once I sat with a cute 20yo female bartender who chatted my ear off the entire trip about her trials and tribulations in the restaurant industry but that's pretty much the only passenger I even remember.

Sometimes I just enjoy the ride and scenery alone, while other times you get to chat with other travellers. The funniest ones I remember include the sleeper car from Germany to Poland, where the Czech trio next door were filming porno in their room. The door was busted open by the conductor because they didnt open the door on time and were quite loud. The other one was an old Korean lady narrating her life story for 4 hours to me when I speak at most 5 words of Korean. Final one was me helping an old lady load in her farm goods on the train in rural China, she was fucking benching 70 kg with a bamboo carrying pole. She handed me a few bok choy as reward which I had the local restaurant cook for me (you have the option to bring your own ingredients to certain small restaurants in China).

I see this framed too often as rider per mile or rider per hour, but those stats are juiced because of the permabums building a new life in the back third of the bus, racking up loads of miles and hours. That isn't an improvement, and on lines that were hitting peak capacity before, it's effectively a drop in capacity.
