How fucked is SEPTA?
>>
>>2052243
no sympathy for septa.
pa should allocate it's funds to pittsburgh to make up for the severe cuts to port authority of allegheny county service in the 2000s and 2010s. septa can deal with it's own "death spiral", the state already let it happen to paac/prt and should remedy that first. not to mention that prt is also actively short on funds and will be both cutting service and implementing a terrible bus redesign in the near future
>>
>>2052263
This reeks of whataboutism. You didn't give any reasons why SEPTA is at fault in your narrative.
>>
>>2052307
all transportation agencies in the US are mostly job programs to funnel as much money as possible to the unions and people connected to the politicians
There needs to be funding provided to these areas because a lot of people rely on them but they don't help themselves at all. Most of the employees do absolutely nothing and they have a no layoff clause in their contracts. It's important to remember that no funding was cut from SEPTA. Their COVID slush fund present from the federal government is ending and ridership dipped to like 60% of what it was because people stopped riding due to the trains and buses being full of homeless junkies and fare jumping kids fucking shit up.
>>
>>2052350
oh also that other guy wasn't me, I was just giving some reasons why SEPTA shares the blame
>>
>>2052350
>>2052352
So what? Should SEPTA be disbanded, the tracks ripped up?
>>
>>2052357
SEPTA being disbanded and a new transit organization being created with new leadership and more funding to move forward isn't a bad idea. That would never happen though because transporting people is way down the list of government priorities regarding SEPTA.
>>
>>2052359
Just curious, are there any transport agencies anywhere you think are good? Transport for London?
I will say that typical of American transit agencies, the governance model is fucking retarded.
>>
>>2052360
I thought London's was better but still not that great for Europe? IDK much about it but they also benefit from not having to deal with severe weather as much as US cities.
I've heard good things about Paris' transit (you know have a problem with France's government institution is many times more efficient than yours). I went to Amsterdam and the trains I used were pretty good but I thought the city was kind of annoying as a pedestrian, I'd prefer a city that focuses more on pedestrians than cyclists. I've been to Tokyo and obviously theirs was great (although I did not expect for almost everything to shut down so early). Japanese society is so different that it just isn't logical to expect a western country to emulate what they do anytime soon.

Oh another thing is that I really like Amtrak, I live in the nicest part of the US for their trains but I can't say I've ever head a problem with them. It's just expensive if you don't plan a bit ahead and get ticket early.
>>
>>2052359
>SEPTA being disbanded and a new transit organization being created
Wouldn't change a goddamn thing.
>with new leadership
Musical chairmanships! That's bound to make a difference!
>more funding
That would work, except it will be treated as a reason to raise pay. Both for union men and management (and their special advisors).
You've lost your way. You've lost the very concept of knowing what your way could be.
>>
>>2052367
There is zero political will and money to do anything else. There isn't even the political will to do that.
>>
>>2052307
septa isn't necessarily at fault, but that doesn't mean they deserve the state budget. the southeastern part of the state already receives a disproportionate amount of funding. don't forget the reallocation of funds to highway projects mostly in western pa toward septa last year..
>>
>>2052373
>PA Turnpike costs like $125 to go from Pittsburgh to Philly.
>Huge chunk of that toll goes to SEPTA
>People stop taking the turnpike because it's retarded
This state is run by complete idiots.
>>
>>2052373
>the southeastern part of the state already receives a disproportionate amount of funding
Do you mean per capita, or per tax dollar contributed? Because I bet that it's not the latter.
>>
>>2052374
a ton of that money goes toward policing in central PA because they can't afford to pay their own police
>>2052376
Philly is a net taker but the metro area isn't. Philly is kind of unique where they need the suburbs more than the suburbs need them. More people live in the city and commute out than live outside and commute in. Also a bunch of the city's tax revenue comes from the wage tax of those who live outside the city. Outside Comcast and the universities a lot of the growth is in the suburbs.
>>
>>2052380
>More people live in the city and commute out than live outside and commute in.
Wait, what? Huh. That's... unusual.
>a lot of the growth is in the suburbs.
Sounds like a great case for an orbital heavy rail transit line.

Also, sounds like maybe the boundaries of Philadelphia should be set further out.
>>
>>2052380
No it doesn't. It goes to transit projects to the tune of $450 million a year. Then the turnpike had to take out bonds to pay it because they couldn't collect enough revenue. Then they had to raise tolls to pay for that debt. Then they had to raise tolls more because fewer people are taking the turnpike because it's so expensive.

This state is run by morons.
>>
>>2052381
Well Philadelphia is kind of in the corner of the state by two big rivers so you have to deal with different states. SEPTA itself has a train that goes down to Delaware but then they actually have a partnership with NJ for a train line to go over the bigger river which is actually pretty good(PATCO). You can catch another train at the end of it to go down the shore.
Also no one outside the city wants anything to do with joining into the city's boundaries. The city is insanely corrupt and incompetent... and the suburbs are some of the nicest counties in the country.
>>2052383
You are right, I was thinking of the PA Motor License Fund which is from gas taxes, registration, etc. and the state police need to police central PA more because they don't have their own police department (I grew up there and I a bunch stopped paying for police when I was there)

>>
>>2052383
>Then they had to raise tolls more because fewer people are taking the turnpike because it's so expensive
$125 to go across the state on a SHIT TIER road is a load of shit desu
>>
All of septa’s funds should go to rebuilding train service in the Lehigh valley TYVM
>>
All of septa's funds should go to me
>>
>>2052388
So true mein Fuhrer
>>
if only we could toll i80 like our western friends do...
>>
>>2052394
>roads should be tolled so motorists pay their "fair share"
>roads should be tolled so the state can have another slush fund to shovel into SEPTA
Well which is the narrative this time?
