What are your opinions on AutoTrain?Do you think the service should be expanded to some of the longer Amtrak routes like the Sunset Limited, Empire Builder or the California Zephyr?
How about this but with a plane?
>>2052643>no you can't do that even tho it was completely feasible 50 years ago
I think people might be more likely to take these services if there an autotrain running on them.A medium sized problem for Amtrak is that they do have these services running from city to city but the cities they go to aren't always accessible if you don't have a car.
>>2052642I'd rather just drive my shit, why bother paying expensive train ticket to be trapped on the train, pay more money to load the car up, hope some idiot moving my car doesn't whack it into anything, When I could just drive, stop when I want, eat what I want when I want, control the HVAC, and be left with a memorable epic road trip?
This thread is now about trains on other modes of transport
I’m guessing that a lot of Auto Train’s clientele are northeast snowbirds avoiding the hell of I-95. There was an Auto Train from the Midwest to Florida in the 70s that probably catered to a similar demographic. Apart from something like Chicago to Phoenix I don’t see many other routes that would serve retirees who can’t handle a long road trip. How common are trains like this in the rest of the world? I know there’s trains that carry cars through the Alps but are there long distance ones?

Freight cars on barges in New York harbor. They were shunted on and off at float bridges and used to access isolated terminals not connected to the rest of the rail network.

>>2052644Cars on a plane sounds based until some retard nigger doesn't lock a car down, it rolls and shifts the weight of the plane to the point where it can't fly.
>>2052746But Autotrain leaves from Virginia south of Washington DC, so all of the heavy I-95 congestion is already north of it.
>>2052642Incredibly stupid idea. Imagine a fairly standard intercity train, such as a 12 car long German ICE 4. It's 346m long in this config, and carries about 830 passengers. Let's be generous and say the train has an average occupancy of 70%. That's 581 people. Of those, let's say 1/3 would like to bring their car with them. But those that want to be with their cars are generally couples or families, so let's say each car on average has an occupancy of 3.0 people. That brings us to 65 cars needed on top of the 12 car 346m long train. Can you imagine how much time and additional infrastructure would be needed to fit those cars on a special traincar? Forget about intermediate stops obviously, as it would take like 30 minutes at each stop. There's a reason they've almost all dissapeared since highways. It's a logistical nightmare. Requires superlong platforms with special car ramps (meaning you end up having to stick stations in inconvenient industrial areas). About the only use are routes where train transport is the only option, such as the train track only channel tunnel. Even then, it's such a hassle I imagine many people prefer the ferry as it's cheaper and wayt easier to load you car unto.
