This goofy intersection is almost done. Traffic turns left to get to the roundabout at the far intersection, turns left to get back on the highway at the near intersection. A truck stop is going in there and this is supposed to keep trucks turning in and out from blocking each other's view resulting in collisions.

It rained a lot last Sunday and the ground is taking a very long time to dry out due to low temperatures and high humidity. The tire tracks on this road would have been fine for riding, but I saw a grader further up the road and decided to turn around. A grader churning up wet mud would likely have left the road unrideable.

I rided again today. I only have a pic of the new parking spot and trugg. Normally this is the turn around spot but I did the trail in reverse and with the XC bike today. Somehow the hills were way harder with a 36t to 11-40t than the gravel bike 46t to 11-46t. Must be the cheap XC bike extra weight. I feels like it's 10 pounds heavier
>>
>>2054895
Would be fun but for what you save on gas you will spend far more on food (hungry cycling) and on more overnight accomodation.

You will be super-fit after. Expect strange looks in rural areas.

Ultimately it is cheap and easy to ship a motorbike to a major American port and ride it about. You don't have to cycle if you don't want to.

It was 118 km, not miles. Average speed was 28 km/h but I wasn't riding hard for the middle third as I was exploring downtown. Lots of climbs though, and I had the scariest cycling moment of my life that I'm still kind of processing... mainly addressing my stupidity and recklessness.

I guess I'll tell it. Found a random very steep hill and went for it on impulse. I saw a curve in the road and figured I'd be able to take it no matter what so got up to well over 80 km/h before I realized it wasn't a curve but a dead end without a fucking sign. The road was eroded at an angle and the shadows from the street lamps made it look like a gentle left-hander. I only got down to about 60km/h before I hit rocky shoreline where I just locked the rear brake and held on. Somehow I stayed upright for nearly 40 feet, cutting a deep rut through wet stones until I got to the finer ones and rolled out. Stopped about 10 feet from the water. The scary part for me is it could have been anything down there... a 10 foot drop, a culvert, anything. There were boulders but off to one side and there was nowhere to bail. I could have gotten knocked out and drowned or just died instantly. I checked afterward and the grade there is 10%.

Feel free to shit on me, I deserve it. I have learned a lesson that's for sure... one I already knew but I needed it reinforced apparently. Never doing that again.

This Saturday I’m going to ride a tandem bicycle with someone for the first time ever. Him and I are both going to be scheduled to do our hobby at the same time and we live in town so we decided to do it. He has the tandem and is a huge bike guy, I bike a lot but not as intensely knowledgeable as he is

We just gave it a test ride for a few minutes tonight and it felt hilarious being in the back not being able to see what’s going on or how to control anything, but I think that we are going to absolutely fly on this thing
>>
>>2057439
it's nice you'll be have your first tandem time with knowledgeable big bike guy. yeah, not being in control might be a bit scary, but it's nice to let loose once in a while. no need to be scared, enjoy the ride. I'm rooting for you!
>>

>>
>>2057446
I’m surprised the first response wasn’t saying how gay it is to ride a tandem bike with another guy. It definitely was a strange feeling having to pretty much look at a guys ass while riding. But I figure I’ll do it once just to say I did it, and if it’s a good experience I might do it again if we have the same schedule some other time.
>>
>>2057474

It’s not a joke at all. I’m leaving in half an hour to meet up at his house and we’re gonna head off on the tandem from there. We both ride our bikes when we go to this hobby, this is the first time in a long time we’ve both signed up to be there on the exact same schedule. He used the bike with his kids (he even has a 3 seat cycle too) doing century rides. I figured this might be the only chance I get to ride one so I might as well take it. I’m extremely curious to see how it is riding the 9 miles there and also how fast we get there.

One small problem with the updated heated gloves I made last year. They draw too much combined amperage to get to full heat from the same battery. I ordered a new power bank with 3A 9V output and twice the capacity for more heat and longer runtime.

New pump day. I have two Topeak Turbo morphs and they are both junk that should have been replaced long ago. Just having them on the bike dirt and water can get inside and mess them up. The press on / flip handle air head also sucks and rare stays engaged. Im never getting another pump that doesn't have a screw on air chuck. I got a flat a few weeks back and the check valve stopped working so it couldn't pump air.

New one is a Lezyne High Volume micro floor drive. Surprisingly lightweight.
>>
>>2059284
my topeak products all broke eventually, like a few years.
my lezyne stuff seems good
>>
>>2059284
Got to try out the pump today because I foolishly ignored a slow leak for a few rides. Tire managed to hold air for an entire ride 3 times so I put off fixing it. The small wire that was still in the tire shifted mid-ride today and it started going flat quickly.

The pump works great, but the handle is a bit awkward being so small.

No flats all summer then 3 in the past two weeks. Today when it was 0C, but I managed to fix it pretty quickly. At least all of them involved something sticking out of the tire. Mystery flats make me paranoid there is something in the tire I missed that will make it go flat again.

I put mine on just hours before the first ice, it was pretty much perfect timing. Seriously considering a second wheelset so I can swap to regular tires quickly though, it's annoying having to go easy on braking and acceleration all the time. Year after year I curse and praise studded tires.

What are you using? I use Schwalbe Marathons but learned the hard way to use liners for when a stud rolls over and punctures the tire. I wish I didn't need to haul so much stuff on my commute but I do, and there's a lot of climbing that's hard on the rear tire as well. Front has never so much as lost a stud though.

I wore the rubber on my Ice Spiker Pros down enough that it was breaking studs. I switched the rear one to a 26" Marathon Winter, but that tire had a defective bead and blew off the rim twice on me wrapping the tube around the rim.

Last fall I switched to 45Nrth 26" Gravdals. I was looking for something that looked like it would roll fast and stand up to bare pavement since I use my fatbike when there is a lot of loose snow.

I never liked the thick sidewalls on the Marathons as it felt like sapped energy unless pumped up rock hard. Once Marathons wear a certain amount they start pushing the studs to the interior of the tire. I had wore Marathons start causing flats on my touring bike. I haven't ridden that bike in winter in several years. Drop bars in the snow keep you on your toes since there is more weight on the bars.
>>
>>2059985
Yeah, the Marathons do need to be max PSI to feel remotely acceptable. I'll definitely check out the Gravdals, I see they are available in 700c.

not really a ride, but today my cycling computer, 2 sensors for cadance and speed, and front light arrived, all from XOSS, i have a taillight from them and its pretty good

I bought the computer with a stand/holder thinking it would allow the mouting of the light as well, and I ordered a light that could be mounted under a stand (didnt shill out 5 euros more for the stand)

well guess what, now I got a shitty stand I can only mount my computer onto, and I gotta do a shitty rubber tie thing mount for my light...
so I thought about it, and spent like 2% of my christmas bonus on a combined XOSS stand and rockbros face mask scarf thing and winter gloves

It warmed up to -1C overnight but I had to deal with light rain. I went for a ride anyway. The rain was turning to ice when it hit the ground but I had good traction with the studded tires. I'm glad I went when I did because shortly after I got home the wind picked up to 60 km/h and the temperature started rapidly dropping on its way back to -20C tonight. I was flying my drone yesterday and was reminded how blue the shadows can get in the winter on a sunny day. Right around sunset all the snow can turn blue for a little while.

I've been watching them work on that bridge for over a month. Drove dozens of multi piece steel piles, having to stop periodically and weld on an additional piece. They were dropping off new concrete pier caps yesterday.

ride more. let your body get accustomed to biking. go slower. don't try to do 100km trips with 30+ avg speeds. it takes time to build up your endurance.

>>
>>2062332
it's pretty easy you see, when you get to 40km ride another 60km+
>>
>>2062332
or ride 50km in one direction, and then you'll have to make another 50km for trip back

If you consider raincapes. Know you'll just sweat your ass off and the thing might feel worse on you than just being usually wet. Also you're wet due to. sweating. Just put on less stuff it dries again faster. In the cold it's no use either as it's not wet when cold.
>>
>>2062510
>s it's not wet when cold
I guess you live in Finland or something where there's subzero temps in September? in a lot of the world, it can rain in December - February. it's raining here now.

the reason raincapes are better than raincoats is that it's completely open underneath so the air circulates instead of trapping all your body heat so you either don't sweat, or far less so, depending on temperature.
they're cut for a riding profile so they don't flap around like a regular poncho and they usually have a brim on the hood to protect rain from flying into your eyes .
but if they don't work for you, then don't use them.

>le raincape le raincape
>just wear a giant sail!
even if it wasn’t windy as fuck all the time uuuuuh no.

so you think people respect you for being soaking wet? Let me guess umbrellas look "stupid" too, no one thinks your cool for doing things intentionally wrong like someone who just ticked over from preteen to teenager.
