It seems Calcutta trams will finally be going the way of the dodo once and for all. It's been a slow agony for many years now, apparently the local government wasn't putting any money into the system and used any excuse to close down more and more lines. Strange to still see a 1st generation tram system get shut down.

Calcutta trams were probably *the* foremost example of a real shithole tram, the shabby vehicles, the trolley poles, the bent rails. It's must have been really something. The rolling stock was apparently Indian-made, the typical vehicles like in pic related from the 1980s.
Probably only Alexandria was anywhere close to the level of shithole tram of Calcutta. They have been getting a few new vehicles recently tho.

I never went to Calcutta and have no intention of ever setting foot in India, but I'm always saddened to see a tram system go, especially a first generation system like Calcutta's.

the real reason it's being closed is it hasn't been crushing enough jeets during daily operation. as a steel juggernaut you gotta pump those numbers or get shut down for being unnecessary.

Why is India so behind on transport? I don't know that much about India but I know that congestion is really bad there.
Just build BRTs everywhere.

Calcutta has it worse than a lot of the country because of the density and the fact that the densest areas are also the oldest and most historically significant, so plowing a new right of way down the middle is not going to be a popular move, but the kind of congestion your pic illustrates is nothing unusual in Asia. Most of the population of India lives in rural areas. Considering what an epic shit show that country is it's amazing that things work as well as they do.

Huh, doesn't looks so bad

How hasn't it fallen apart already?
Also, what's up with Indians putting metal grates where other countries would use glass?

Maybe there's no AC and they did it for ventilation

nah theyre just cheap. in arab countries they use extra thick windows where possible and rivet heavy blankets to the interior of everything so once you park it in the shade for a bit to cool off, it stays reasonably cool inside for longer.

low iq compared with low value of human life exacerbated by the caste system telling 90% of the population that they are doomed to be a moron forever and even in their future lives so there's no reason to even try not to be retarded and worthless

they are behind on transport compared to other countries with similar amounts of money and population but they are still building more than the US lmao. the fucking shithole of india will have high speed rail before the US. and they have over 85% electrified rail while the US is like 1% lmao. I'd still rather live in the US but it's extremely pathetic how bad they are.
