If all children's (geared and break-pad) bikes were banned and everyone rode fixies (adult bikes), then we wouldn't need any of the polarising debate over 'bike infrastructure'. We wouldn't need to slow down traffic through cities or dig up roads and pavements, everyone would be a lot safer and bikes could flow freely among cars.Is it finally time for governments around the world to ban geared bikes (at least for people above the age of say, 10) and give up on the idea of seperate bike and car infrastructure, letting all modes of transport to flow freely among eachother?
>>2057537Reminds me of the "polyphonic perception" meme
with a fixie you can go anywhere you want

You can't pedal a bmx up a steep hill tho the power just isn't transferred. Gears have their purpose. Riding a bike with no brakes should get you beaten up by the police imo. No tickets just a serious beating.
>writes essay on sharing the road>gets sideswiped by a soccer mom answering her onlyfans followers while driving
I can understand a fixie but why no brakes? There are bound to be situations where it is useful.
>>2057993I ride my fixed gear or BMX every day to work depending on which one I ride. It's totally doable if you are willing to sweat a bit.>>2057963You can brake with the fixed gear drive train. It's a totally effective brake and the term 'brakeless fixed gear bike' is a misnomer
>>2057537>break-pad
This isn't a great thread but it's better than the NUMTOT zoomlet spam so bump
>>2058000so what is the advantage you gain by risking so much injury. Its already dangerous enough to bike as a commute as it forces you into certain times and places you don't want to be on a bicycle. What is the benefit of not having brakes.
>>2059803Brakeless riders will say that they are able to brake better without the use of brakes but this is just a cope. They go brakeless because it's less parts/cables you need to buy and they enjoy using their body to stop as opposed to using the brake pads to slow down their speed. I use back pressure with my legs in addition to front and rear bakes on my fixed gear bike and it stops just fine. Also the added risk makes it more fun. It's like how people parachute out of airplanes or go mountain biking down trails where one crash could paralyse/kill you if you hit that tree or rock the wrong way. I will add that if you're going less than 20km/h in my experience you can slow down enough with just your legs. It won't be as fast as using the brakes but it is doable. The issue with brakeless riders is they often go way faster than that and often put themselves in situations where they are forced to emergency brake frequently. Imo though to keep it short the main benefit is cost. If you don't run brakes you don't need brake levers, brake cables+housing, you also don't need brake calipers and you don't need the pads that come with them. But this comes at the cost of safety and being able to consistently brake.
>>2057590You conflate being unwilling to do something hard with it being infeasible for the average person. Just because you're lazy doesn't mean other people are
>>2059840see this is what confuses me I literally mountain bike. I however would never use an actual fixed gear (without a freehub) cause it seems impossible to have any level of incident without breaking your legs. Essentially having the pedals actually attached to the chain and wheel seems insane to me.
If you live in Texas you have to have at least one brake on your bike that is capable of bringing the bike to a skidding stop on clean, dry, level pavement. You cannot legally ride brakeless on public roads or sidewalks. Cops will stop you and harass you and search you just like if you were riding with no lights at night. I'm sure many other states have similar laws.
>>2059840>the main benefit is costAs a fixed gear rider myself, I must say, you guys are fucking poor. Stop penny pinching and just be more productive in life. Even expensive bike parts are pretty cheap. If you can't buy at least one measley little bike part every month it's because you're fucking up in life and you need to get your finances straight.
>>2059856well they don't really make fixed gear mountain bikes for that reason, you can only ride fixed on relatively level surfaces, because you can't level out your pedals to go around corners or over roots or anything like that. the pedals are always moving so the risk of hitting your pedals or cranks on obstacles makes it nigh impossible to go mountain biking and survive.
>>2057537>bikes could flow freely among carsUnfortunately not in today's road death cult with 3 ton mobile living rooms steered by unaware/sedated/homicidal drivers blasting through towns at highway speeds.

are fixie riders the new manual transmission "its better cuz u have to pay more attention" people?
>>2061088The adrenaline from the constant pedaling seems to make me more alert personally. So ye kind of lol
>>2061088I used to be gas/o/holic in the 00s with a manual FC and S13 back in the day, I now ride fixies and yes it's the manual of the bicycle world. The motorcycle equivalent is carbureted and no abs/tcs.>"its better cuz u have to pay more attention"the real answer is more road feel for better man-machine connection
