>going uphill>switch gears to that crazy "1" number on my bike I never use>uphill becomes extremely easyWHAT THE FUCK IT WAS THAT EASY ALL ALONG?
>>2062179Wait till you try to downshift the front deraileur.
>>2062183there are some really stupidly steep roads in my city and even on those i dont go to 1st and 1st. it feels like the bike doesnt even move even though my legs are churning the cranks a billion rpm
>>2062186When I was a kid my first "real" bike was a trek 820 with a shimano "megarange" 3x7 which had an absurdly short first gear, I called it the wheelie gear but really the reason was so short I think its only real purpose is for fully loaded touring going up a steep mountain
>>2062187yeah at that point i just get off and walk. it's literally faster AND easier
>>2062179Its incredible how hard this is for normal people to grasp. My girlfriend never understood that, bless her heart. Or that special forces dude who thinks its a better workout to stay in high gear
>>2062190Depends on the load really. A steep enough hill, a tent, 2 days of food, some tools, and that’s enough weight to really dampen your spirits walking
>>2062179>climb 18%-20% slope>put 42 in rear 30 in front>it's still hard while barely movingwow my home rides can suck
>>2062179>>2062192Did you (or anon's girlfriend) never have driven a car? Or learned about transmissions at least?
winning move, when you see a hill, is to turn back
>>2062202Literally and unironically no
>>2062206Low gear = lower speed = higher torque = easier to move from a stopHigh gear = higher speed = lower torque = harder to move from a stop
>>2062202Most people under 50 think driving a manual car is some kind of dark sorcery to be listed on your linkedin like it's a phd in math
>>2062246>vtecLol, I used to have one of those when I had a cage. Fun times. I think if you own a car past the age of 20 you should be questioning your life choices. Like who are you larping as? Ahmed the uber driver? Lol!
>>2062198put that shit on the bike itself and use the bike like a cart you retard>hurr im gonna get a 120l backpack that needs a fucking tubular steel frame to hold it together>but a pannier on my bike omg that would increase the weight too much, muh performance!!hate you people so much>>2062204if you try to use bike gears like a car transmission it sucks ass. on top of just being generally unnecessary, you need a fair bit of speed to get a derailleur to work. it's easier to just stand on the pedals from a stop and use the gears like range/overdrive settings work in a car then trying muh left foot braking type shiti swear, 99% of this board has never actually ridden a bike for any longer than it takes to make an instagram post
>>2062263The dunning kruger in this post is intense, did you used to trip as sieg on /fa/?
>>2062263None of what you said applies to the posts you replied to, this may be the worst post of 2025.
My lowest gearing is 34:34 for the winter commuter and 44:32 for the summer commuter. I like to feel something when climbing but still feel efficient overall.
>>2062183>struggled with underground crossing ramps on my 1x bike, had to time switching from 7 to 1 exactly to getting onto the ramp to not spin, and it's still not enough>got a bike with 44-22 front>just get onto the ramp with some speed, haphazardly toss it into low, fly up the ramp and quickly get it back to the big boy gear at the topwide range doubles are fucking magic
>>2062263That last part of your post can be provably extrapolated to every boardI'd wager only 10, maybe even 5% of a boards users actually engage in said hobby
>>2062202Nope most people here drive automatics. Infact when it snows no one knows you can downshift the gearbox, its sad
>>2062263It was very brave of you to make a post like that, everyone opinion of you has certainly changed
>>2062281word
>>2062186I have one of those at my local trails, tops out at 23%, 34tx52t and lowered tire pressure but still spin out on the loose stuff... just end up pushing the bike up hill for a mile
>>2062377spinning has nothing to do with the gears dumbass. if you chose a gear so low, the torque will be increased at the wheel and you'll spin MORE. dumbass.
>>2062179slow is smooth, smooth is fast.
>>2062424That's what my flight instructor would say.
>>2062406lol im on dirt so it really doesn't matter you fucking faggot. You cant keep spinning over all the rocks and obstacles anyway or you will clip a pedal on root or a rock. Roadies really are shitty people who deserve to die in traffic.and I made a small mistake I actually have 30x52t
