In the 2000s, IC cards were all the rage and adopted in many places across the world for fare payment. Is this technology effectively dead now that Apple Pay has this function built in, and all chipped credits card also have this tap to pay ability?
Apple has a way smaller market share outside the US and in Japan specifically they use a different NFC tech in their phones so foreign phones can't use the public transport apps for payment at the gates. That's why I still have my Suica, Passmo and Icoca cards when I visit. But overall they're definitely dying out which is sad.
>>2068009Apple Pay and its cell phone equivalents are all the same technology-wise, regardless of manufacturer. This alone makes it a critical mass>foreign phones can't use the public transport apps for payment at the gatesThis is only true for chink junk phones or whatever bottom of the barrel manufacturers poorfags on /g/ buy. The reason is the manufacturer won't pay the license fee for it, and can't enable the function as a result
>>2068012>Apple Pay and its cell phone equivalents are all the same technology-wise, regardless of manufacturer. This alone makes it a critical massAs I said, you underestimate how many Android users there are. I know Burgers see Androids as some kind of poor fags signifier, in other countries however Apple barely has a third.>This is only true for chink junk phones or whatever bottom of the barrel manufacturers poorfags on /g/ buy.No. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osaifu-KeitaiIt's literally different hardware that most phones that phones built for a market outside of Japan don't have. Some google Pixels can do it with modding.
>>2068012>This is only true for chink junk phones or whatever bottom of the barrel manufacturers poorfags on /g/ buy.I clicked on this board by accident and the first post I see is someone being so confidently incorrect.
Also, Osaifu-Keitai is fundamentally based on Sony's FeliCa, which all phones emulate in Apple Pay/Google Pay/Samsung Pay unless your phone is junk. Apple has had it since iPhone 7 in Japan , and worldwide it's been there since iPhone 8. Lagdroid manufacturers often refuse to pay the license for it, hence it's disabled on their models (poor people).>>2068015open sores is a disease
>>2068004I still use the cards if they're available. If you don't register them they're semi-anonymous, which I appreciate. Plus they're fun souvenirs.

>>2068009>>2068012Felica is honestly far superior than all of it's competitors, the only reason it didn't become an international standard is because of Japanese licencing autism.
>>2068004They still use these in Montreal and they work just fine, and they still operate off a 20 year old data standard that costs more to break than a ticket would.
