Anonymous ICE deports school superintend(...) 09/28/25(Sun)10:29:46 No. 1442930 De Moines superintendent detained by ICE with pending deportation order. When they stopped his vehicle, he fled on foot and was found with several thousand dollars in cash and a loaded firearm. He had existing firearm charges from 2020 which were missed by background checks. https://www.newsweek.com/des-moines-schools-board-responds-after-superintendent-detained-by-ice-10793840 Des Moines Schools Board Responds After Superintendent Detained by ICE The Des Moines Public Schools Board has unanimously voted to place Superintendent Ian Roberts on paid leave after immigration agents detained him, Chair Jackie Norris announced. Why It Matters Amid President Donald Trump’s mass deportation campaign and growing backlash against ICE, the detention of Des Moines Superintendent Ian Roberts has become a high-profile example of federal crackdowns impacting local institutions. Roberts, who oversees the education of about 30,000 students, is a prominent figure in Iowa’s capital. According to the district’s website, he was born to parents from Guyana and raised in Brooklyn, New York. In a statement on Friday, September 27, Norris said Roberts represented himself as a U.S. citizen during the hiring process. She added that the independent firm contracted to conduct a background check did not identify any concerns with his immigration status. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said agents stopped Roberts on Friday while he was driving and that he fled on foot into a nearby wooded area before being apprehended with assistance from the Iowa State Patrol. The agency said he was found in possession of a loaded handgun, a fixed-blade hunting knife, and about $3,000 in cash. Norris said the district learned from ICE that “in May 2024, an immigration judge issued a final removal order for Dr. Roberts.” She added, “We were not made aware of that fact, and that’s very concerning. I want to be clear, no one here was aware of any citizenship or immigration issues." >>
Anonymous 09/28/25(Sun)10:30:59 No. 1442931 Norris said the district is cooperating with authorities and reviewing the situation. “In this case, Dr. Roberts completed the I-9 employment eligibility verification form and submitted the required documentation,” she said, and district records indicate Roberts affirmed he was a U.S. citizen when hired. The Iowa Department of Education issued Roberts a superintendent's license in 2023 after conducting criminal background checks, the district stated. Roberts began serving as Des Moines superintendent on July 1, 2023, after a national search that included third-party background checks commissioned by the district’s search firm and “found nothing related to citizenship or immigration matters related to Dr. Roberts.” She said the district is working with authorities and continues to gather details about the situation. "Two things can be true. We must support our interim superintendent and staff as they lead 35,000 students and staff on Monday, because our collective role is to educate and support our students and their families," Norris said. "And we must continue to pursue the facts in this case and understand our school community is still processing this very significant issue." Associate Superintendent Matt Smith has been appointed interim superintendent under the district’s leadership succession plan, the school announced. Roberts has existing weapon possession charges stemming from February 5, 2020. He entered the United States on a student visa in 1999. >>
Anonymous 09/28/25(Sun)10:32:00 No. 1442932 The investigation into how Roberts obtained the handgun is being referred to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Federal law prohibits individuals without legal status in the U.S. from possessing firearms and ammunition Daniel Chapin with the nonprofit The Uvalde Foundation For Kids, told Newsweek: "We know many in the community are understandably confused, perhaps even frustrated, with the recent arrest of their superintendent. However, we must not allow this incident to send a message that the superintendent's failures and actions were acceptable. Additionally, we must hold school leaders accountable for answers. This situation is not about race or larger political issues. It is fundamentally about a leader—an educational leader at that—setting an example and serving his community in integrity, as so many dedicated educators and administrators across Iowa do every single day. The focus must remain on the breach of trust and the integrity required of those who oversee our children’s safety and education." Des Moines Public Schools Board Chair Jackie Norris said at a board meeting: “We all need to cool down the rhetoric. We should promote true discourse and facts not spread misinformation meant to divide us." ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations St. Paul Field Office Director Sam Olson said in a statement: "This suspect was arrested in possession of a loaded weapon in a vehicle provided by Des Moines Public Schools after fleeing federal law enforcement.” >>

This is really someone I would have rather just been given citizenship. He's been here for like 30 years, Olympic athlete, and he has continually bettered himself via education according to the district page.. sure, his PhD is wonky, but his bachelor's, masters, and non degree programs he's taken are solid. It also lists him as an avid hunter on the district page which makes me think his weapons violation is not really a big deal, maybe he transported a weapon incorrectly or something. Although given that the dudes in Olympic runner, I did get a little chuckle after I realized he tried to run from ice >>

I'm tired of seeing him on local news every week anyways, he gets glazed for doing basically nothing despite leading one of the most underperforming and most well funded school districts in the state. Democrats aren't going to win because of some irrelevant illegal alien superintendent getting (rightfully) arrested, they are going to win because of the broad overreach of the Trump administration and the slumping economy, also generally midterms are brutal for whoever is in charge regardless.>>
Anonymous 09/28/25(Sun)15:00:45 No. 1443023 >>1443021 >Seems to my like Des Moines area schools fucked up hiring this guy Yeah this raises a lot of questions too, they claim he filled out an I-9 form and that he passed a background check yet somehow neither of those things caught that he was an illegal alien or had a weapons conviction. I guess one answer could have been he used a fake identity or something but I really don't think that's the case, it sounds like the school district either has really bad background investigation services or they just covered it up and didn't care. I don't even know how the I-9 thing could have possibly happened if he was an illegal alien, I've been assured repeatedly that process is secure and illegal aliens can't abuse it without using somebody else's identity>>
Anonymous 09/28/25(Sun)15:10:28 No. 1443024 >>1443023 >Yeah this raises a lot of questions too, they claim he filled out an I-9 form and that he passed a background check yet somehow neither of those things caught that he was an illegal alien or had a weapons conviction. Right, actually kind of unbelievable, I know the the state of Iowa does a pretty decent background check and will refuse hiring people on the basis of it. I had family that worked for the Polk County assessors as an accountant and they had people fail background checks and not get hired. How does one of the highest paid employees for the state of Iowa not get the same degree of background check is suspicious to me, someone probably dropped the ball whether that be the HR dept for Des Moines Area Schools or the contracted background check company I don't know. Even a basic NICS check which takes five minutes should've given a red flag for the gun charge unless they didn't do it... Also how did this guy come into possession of firearms, I thought weapons convictions would bar you from being able to buy one. I know from personal experience in both private and government jobs I had, I worked for Iowa State University as a research assistant in the national lab for that specific position a number of years ago and I had to prove US residency with a passport/birth certificate/SSN card back in the 2000s. Same process when I went to private industry.>>

I'm not really an expert in weapons charges or regulations, but here's my guest based on something I said in one of my previous posts the district lists him as an avid hunter. The guy has several degrees and is an Olympic athlete. I would not be surprised whatsoever if the weapon charge they mentioned is for something minor like maybe transporting a weapon incorrectly in his vehicle, idk. Doesn't seem like the background of someone to use a weapon is part of a crime, so I'm guessing it's some sort of procedural or non criminal infraction>>
