On Wednesday, Pam Bondi, the US attorney general, suggested the DoJ would reverse its decision to close the investigation into Epstein’s associates after “new information” was obtained by investigators.

When asked about Mr Trump’s recent call for an investigation into Epstein’s relationship with prominent Democrats, Mr Patel insisted the FBI would “just follow the facts”.

He also appeared to suggest the Epstein estate had not complied with requests from the government for information.

“Based on the new referral, we’ll take a look at that and see what evidence comes but there’s an important distinction, the information that the government possesses versus the information that the Epstein estate possesses,” Mr Patel said.

He added: “Those are two separate boxes of information, and the Epstein estate has not been willing to share information with the US government, and so even though we’ve requested them to do so.”

Mr Patel added that the FBI would try to make as few redactions as possible “while also upholding, always, victim’s rights”.

More than 33,000 documents the government holds on the convicted paedophile have already been released by House Republicans.

For any material withheld or redacted, the DoJ is required to outline their justifications for doing so within 15 days of their public release.
