The Journal reported that the group helping Machado reached out to the U.S. military so it would not strike her boat. In addition to Machado, two people were on board the fishing skiff that skipped across the sea after a two-month planning process.“We coordinated that she was going to leave by a specific area so that they would not blow up the boat,” said the person close to the operation, according to the Journal.“The Trump administration was aware of the operation, said people familiar with the matter, but the extent of its involvement was unclear,” the Journal reported, but it noted the U.S. Navy and the Pentagon declined to comment and the administration “denied accuracy of the military contact.”
Using flight-tracking data, the Journal reported a pair of U.S. Navy F-18s flew into the Gulf of Venezuela and circled in the air for approximately 40 minutes, coinciding with Machado’s travel. The White House did not immediately respond to The Hill’s request for comment on the matter.In Curaçao, she joined a private contractor supplied by the Trump administration who specializes in extractions to get her to Oslo, the Journal reported.Machado landed in Oslo on Wednesday, stopping en route in Bangor, Maine. But she did not make it for the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony, with her daughter accepting the award on her behalf.She appeared early Thursday on a hotel balcony.“Oslo, here I am!!” Machado wrote in an Instagram caption for her video speaking to a large crowd of supporters from the balcony.Her arrival comes months after she dedicated her award to President Trump.“We are on the threshold of victory and today, more than ever, we count on President Trump, the people of the United States, the peoples of Latin America, and the democratic nations of the world as our principal allies to achieve Freedom and democracy,” she wrote in an October post on the social platform X. “I dedicate this prize to the suffering people of Venezuela and to President Trump for his decisive support of our cause!” she continued. Venezuela’s leaders say the Trump administration’s strikes on the Latin American country are rooted in oil gains.“Those extremist, fascist lackeys who have been asking for blockades, invasions and bombings against Venezuela are going to be defeated again, the same way their cheap show in Norway fell apart,” Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez said, according to the Journal.Machado is expected to return to Venezuela “when we believe the security conditions are right, and it won’t depend on whether or not the regime leaves,” The Associated Press reported.
