Pharmacists have urged Wes Streeting to stockpile medicines that may run out because of Iran’s blockade on the Strait of Hormuz.

Patients across Britain could soon be affected by “worsening medicine shortages”, according to the Independent Pharmacies Association, which represents 5000 pharmacies across England and Wales.

In a letter to the Health Secretary, Dr Leyla Hannbeck, the organisation’s chief executive, said disruption to international trade could make an already difficult situation “far worse” for community pharmacies under strain from the fragile global supply chain.

Dr Hannbeck said: “Many common drugs, including aspirin, paracetamol, ibuprofen and a range of antibiotics, rely on petroleum-based ingredients as well as other raw materials sourced from the Middle East and beyond.

“Any disruption to these supplies increases production costs and slows manufacturing, which quickly translates into lower availability on pharmacy shelves.”

This could have an impact on “essential treatments that millions rely on daily”, she added, including common blood pressure medicines such as propranolol, and cholesterol treatments to prevent heart attacks and strokes.

Painkillers already in short supply
Painkillers such as co-codamol and opioids used for managing chronic pain have been particularly difficult to source in recent months, she said, along with some cancer medicines, including efudix, a topical chemotherapy cream used to target and destroy cancerous and precancerous cells on the skin.

UK pharmacies have also struggled this year to secure stocks of antidepressants and HRT.

The UK imports most of its drugs, and even those that come from the EU are often made from materials that are shipped from countries such as China or India.

Dr Hannbeck urged Mr Streeting to “immediately prevent the export or hoarding” of the 150 medicines already identified as those in the shortest supply.

This could be done by placing all 150 on the Government’s list of “medicines that you cannot export from the UK or hoard”.

Dr Hannbeck warned: “Medicines supply issues risk delayed treatment for patients and for some patients, this can have serious consequences.

“For pharmacists, shortages like these have become a constant part of the job, requiring hours spent contacting suppliers, speaking with prescribers about alternatives, and reassuring patients who are naturally concerned about access to their medication.”

Demand for medicines shortage tsar
The Independent Pharmacies Association is also calling on ministers to appoint a medicines shortage tsar, and to introduce a “critical medicines list” which will ensure appropriate steps are taken in advance to prevent shortages.

A Department of Health and Social Care spokesman said: “The vast majority of the UK’s licensed medicines are in good supply, and to make sure this remains the case, we are investing more in the domestic medicine manufacturing industry.

“We’re strengthening the resilience of our medicine supply by offering financial incentives for the manufacturing of more medicines – and have well-established processes in place to mitigate risks, including using alternative medicines when available.

“We are also actively engaging with partner countries to bolster supply chains – protecting NHS services and patients.”

Maybe stop making poison out of oil to feed to people and start growing medicinal plants like we used to.

Modern medicine is better. Reminder petroleum-based ingredients are just ingredients, not whole oil.

Some medicines are byproducts of oil refinement, like petroleum jelly.
