Before he can vote for himself in next month’s primary, Mike Lindell needs to register to vote in the state he wants to lead as governor.

The Minnesota Secretary of State’s office said Lindell, President Donald Trump’s preferred candidate, “does not have an active record,” said Cassondra Knudson, spokesperson for the Minnesota Secretary of State, when asked if Lindell is a registered voter.

A Minnesota Star Tribune review of voter records shows Lindell has an active voter registration in Texas.

Lindell acknowledged last year he had been living in Texas and that he’d have to re-establish residency in Minnesota to run for governor, something he says he has now done. But Lindell has not signed up to cast a ballot for himself since his return to Minnesota, and Texas lists an active voter registration record for the MyPillow CEO.

In an interview with the Minnesota Star Tribune, Lindell said he didn’t know if he was registered to vote in Minnesota and would have to check. But he said “obviously I’m going to vote,” and that he wouldn’t vote in Texas because he doesn’t live there anymore.

“I’m not going to vote twice,” he said.

Lindell does not need to be registered to vote in Minnesota to run for office here. But his lack of knowledge about his voter registration status is notable for a candidate who has called for strict scrutiny of voter rolls and made election integrity the central pillar of his campaign and political life.

Lindell is running in the Aug. 11 primary against Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth and retired health executive Kendall Qualls, who won the Republican Party endorsement in May.

Trump endorsed Lindell on Wednesday, upending the primary for governor and making Lindell an instant front-runner. But many in the GOP believe Lindell is unelectable in November and have painted his move to Texas as abandoning Minnesota. Lindell said he lives in Minnesota full time, now, however.

“My company hasn’t left,” Lindell said. “I love Minnesota, and this is where I was born and raised and I’m staying put in Minnesota.”

Lindell told the Star Tribune he lived in Texas for about a year because his wife is from the area. Lindell’s Texas registration is in the small city of Lufkin, where an LLC tied to Lindell owns a house, according to property tax records.

Before he moved to eastern Texas, Lindell last cast a Minnesota ballot in the 2022 general election, according to a Star Tribune review of state voting records. Lindell said he voted in Texas in the 2024 election.

If and when Lindell registers to vote in Minnesota, he will likely be registered in two states until Texas officials remove his name from the state’s voter rolls. In the wake of the 2020 election, Lindell hosted “election integrity events” that encouraged critics to review voter lists to spot fraud.

But Lindell’s case highlights the complexity of an election system where a person can be registered to vote in multiple states. It’s only illegal if a voter casts a ballot in both states.

Lindell appears to be the only major candidate for governor who is not registered to vote in Minnesota, according to Minnesota records published online and campaign officials.

Records show active registrations for Demuth and Qualls. The voter registration records for U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, the presumptive DFL nominee for governor, are not visible online. Campaign spokesperson Darwin Forsyth said Klobuchar is registered to vote and has voted in every election for decades. But she is enrolled in a home address privacy program that shields voting information from the public.

That isn’t the case for Lindell. Knudson said Lindell is “not an active participant in the Safe at Home Program.”

That seems like an important thing to know and since you yourself have to establish residency in a state for voting purposes should be a pretty easy question to say “yes/no” to.
