havent seen that model before but i always thought that one of the benefits of headers on the 01 tacoma was to get rid of the pain in the ass crossover pipe that goes over the tranny. these headers look like they retain that for some reason.

im thinking of doing a cowl intake mod where you add a tube from the airbox to the cowl to get the intake about a foot higher but there are very few good reasons to do it.

I'd worry about air restrictions but these trucks are gutless so I doubt it would make much difference. I'm guessing this means drilling a big hole in the firewall so you can pull air from the cowl intake? My main worry with that would be sealing thing well enough so you're not pulling hot air from the engine bay.

muh mpgs unfortunatly. There is enough room to have put the V8 from the tundra of the same years in without any issues. The tacoma had to stay a six so it wouldn't eat into tundra sales though.
>>
>>28569034
but the 4runner had the 4.0L concurrently, what's up with that?
>>
>>28569808
True, however the 4runner moved over to the V6 later. Toyota tends to refresh one model at a time in this segment.
>>
>>28570083
4runner always had an option for V6. 1st gen had the 3.0L
Why did the 5th gen 4runner (2010-2024) have a 4.0L while the tacoma dropped it in 2015?

Toyota switched V6 engines on the Taco for fuel economy reasons, mainly CAFE shit and also because they sold a shitton of Tacos in places like Hawaii where gas is expensive. People were mainly buying 4Runners at that time as mallcrawlers and gas mileage wasn't as big a concern. Plus they axed the FJ Cruiser which only ever came with the 4.0L, in part because it was such a thirsty piglet.

There's a reason Toyota now only offers turbocharged, overworked, grenade-tier engines in all of their consumer vehicles. Do not give them money, buy old Toyotas with 4.0'
s and DO NOT take your vehicle to a dealership for any services. They will absolutely sabotage it so you buy a nu-Toyota.

Dunno if this is the right general to ask.
I've got a 7.3 PowerStroke with the 4R100, and my transmission keeps puking ATF when climbing trails my stock XJ would giggle at, even when empty.
Am I doing something wrong, or do transmissions just get hot when crawling? I thought a low gear and keeping the engine at peak torque revs would keep the transmission cooler than a higher gear and RPMs.
Should I install a bigger cooler? Or is it just my driving habits/techniques fucking up my transmission?

That's sick, why did you want the winch hidden? I'd be worried about it being more difficult to operate when in a bog or water
>>
>>28573902
I don't like showing off or drawing attention. That's why I got a hidden mount and wanted to keep the hook as hidden as I could. Further it keeps future doctors and lawyers from stealing the hook.
It's possible the flip up bracket could get in the way if I buried it up to the bumper. However if I"m that deep, I don't know if a 10k lb winch is going to get me out. I have a wireless remote for the winch and a switch to turn the winch on in the cab. Switch runs a 100A relay that powers the winch. So at the least I can winch out or pop the hood and put the winch in neutral. It's really easy to reach with the hood popped.
I have yet to use it though but I have a trip planned to a bunch of old abandoned mines so I should get some use out of it then.

ATF was puking out of the front seal and forming a small puddle below the truck. The leaking stops once I've let the engine idle for a bit and the transmission to cool off. Fluid levels seem fine, but it's still worrisome since I don't think I overfilled it when I replaced all the fluids when I bought it.

>>28573768
How's it a time bomb? Genuinely asking. It's bone stock and I'm the second owner. I've already put ~11,000 miles on it since last December, no issues outside of the transmission getting toasty when I tackle a steep trail at <15mph.

To add - I'm typically only in 4Hi or 2Hi when doing this. I haven't used 4Lo outside of helping unstuck a stranger that drove himself into a ditch.

I've never heard of an auto pissing out its own fluid unless it's got a bad gasket or seal somewhere. I've had my own ATF leak out before, but only because of pinhole leaks in the cooler lines that lead from the tranny to the front where the cooler is located.

Trannies definitely get hot when crawling, if your transfer case has a low range I'd suggest using that to give your torque converter a bit of a break. Failing that, your diff ratio might be in need of a change if you're going to be climbing regularly.

Inspect any drain or fill plugs on the bellhousing too, I had some dribbling out of mine once but it was only because the overflow plug wasn't totally snugged down. Check the threads for damage too. Might be leaking under high pressure/expansion but not under regular operating temps.
>>
>>28574150
The 4R100 has puked for others, apparently, which makes Googling even more difficult because half of the time it's idiots stomping on the go pedal in overdrive up a 12% grade with 11,000lbs in tow. And reversing spikes the temps for some reason I can't wrap my head around.
I'll check the seals I can find without dropping the transmission. Can't be fucked to do that unless I'm doing a rebuild.

Truck has the NP273, with a 4Lo 2.71:1 reduction. I was always under the assumption that was for Moab-level shenanigans. How often do you all use 4Lo when offroad? What circumstances make you think to grab the 4x4 lever?

And I can't find/see anything on the bellhousing. From the shit I can find online, there's just the shit in the bellhousing itself alongside the magnetic drain plug on the pan. And the disptick tube.

Thanks friend.

Let's talk tires.

I'm preparing for a trip that's going to involve a decent amount of driving on sandy tracks (Saharan "piste") and beach. I'll be driving a small car with a total weight of maybe 1150 kg fully loaded.

Three questions--

My understanding is that I want less aggressive tread (like picrel) rather than knobby in order to avoid digging in. Correct?

I would like to get something with a heavy duty carcass (like a commercial van tire) for puncture resistance, but I've also heard that such tires are more likely to de-bead when aired down. Is this something that I need to worry about at 1 bar of pressure on the sand? Any other downsides to going with XL or commercial tires?

Narrow vs wide for tires? At a given pressure, they're going to have the same area contact patch, so width just determines shape of the patch. Am I right to think that narrow will be better than wide in order to reduce resistance due to "bulldozing" effect?

Sounds like it might just be a design issue/flaw with the actual tranny if others are reporting the same issues. That being said, it may not have been designed for that kind of work so maybe it's being pushed past its limits too, everything has a breaking point.

>How often do you all use 4Lo when offroad? What circumstances make you think to grab the 4x4 lever?

If I'm froading on loose surfaces in the summer I always keep it in 4WD, but usually 4Hi and I'll just limit it to 2nd or 3rd gear at the most. In the winter and on really steep gravel hills I always use 4Lo, the vehicle just climbs more reliably and I don't get any wheel spin. Some of the trails I use are very narrow and steep on the sides, can't risk scooting the ass off the side and dying in a ravine.

for the amount of work involved in that I would say it's a good price, maybe even a bit on the low side. keep in mind what this guy has said >>28577870 , body work and frame repair can be done quite poorly and it'll fall out/rot after 12 months putting you back to square one again. that's where a reputable shop comes into play.
>>
>>28578095
Depends on the roof rack, there's a ton of different designs. Usually clamps or L-brackets bolted to the rack are the standard method.

Some racks are square, round, flat bar, elliptical, etc. so it'll vary. Tell us what rack you've got and we can help more I'm sure.

Yeah ive been looking at parts already and seeing how expensive they get. Luckily i have a friend witha 4runner that knows whats good in terms of toyota parts. I was surprised to see toyota selling some oem parts for the 80 still.
Still gunna be some rare parts tho for sure.
I found some oem birfields for close to 400 and that's probably going to be one of the first big services done to it. That and the radiator and all hoses.
Guy told me it has gotten regular oil changes and the belts look new. The rear axle seals were done too.

Can my shitbox road-trip through rural areas in Mexico, or will it not make it?

It’s a 2005 Ford Focus ZX4 with auto trans and the 2.0L engine.

I installed the lightbar because my headlights were acting up. Little redneck, but it works.

Do I install fatter, wider tires with more suitable tread, put a winch on the front bumper, and send it? I know MX has a lot of dirt roads
>>
>>28581237
Don't you worry about getting robbed or kidnapped in Mexico? Always baffles me that so many people vacation there.
>>
>>28581273
It’s a risk, but so is everything in this life. Drive during the day, plan your route ahead, and don’t carry a bunch of fancy stuff, and you’ll probably be fine. I reckon tourism is actually a very high-value exchange for their country, so Mexicans know gringos who’re minding their own business are to be left alone (cartels especially)

Can you find trouble if you look for it? Sure, but that’s anywhere. Americans get kidnapped in Fife, WA then pimped out on Aurora Ave in Seattle.

You’d let that stop you from traveling to Mexico, eating delicious food, chilling on the beaches, and maybe fucking a bunch of really hot Mexican girls?

There’s travel insurance, and an embassy there. It’s not like Russia, where you could be imprisoned/kidnapped and U.S. authorities may not be able to help you.
>>
>>28581362

It's been a few years, but the last time I was in Mexico, I rented a car and cruised around CDMX, Tlaxcala, Puebla, and Veracruz. It was great. I had a lot of fun. In the 00s and 10s, I made a few visits to a ranch in the middle of nowhere in Baja. One of the "fun" activities was getting dropped off 50-100 km away and making it back to camp without being caught by the staff. It was fine. Mexican people are nice.

Regarding the car, a cheap throwaway car like your old Focus is a great choice. It's much more fun to drive something you can afford to lose, and you'll attract less of the wrong kind of attention than you would in a built offroad or overland rig. You can get plenty rural with a normal 2wd passenger car, patience, and mechanical sympathy. Just make sure it's in good shape with all the necessary preventative maintenance done before you leave, and remember to carry some extra water with you.

Potty training starts at 9mo. 15m after feeding go stick them on the shitter. Teach them the sign language for potty (fist, rotate at wrist right to left a few times), sing a potty song or make a specific noise right when they start to piss for conditioning stimuli, clap and congratulate them each time. Cotton underwear during the day at like 14mo and they'll be out of diapers at 15mo

Depends if you've done an albright conversion or not. If you haven't upgraded anything on this winch, the Chinese one will be fine because you're hardly using it anyways and before the controller fails the solenoids will fail first.

If you've actually fixed it up definitely get a real controller, or even beyond that in cab controls.

that's pretty much what the bodyshop I went to did. they showed me thickness of the steel they used for the repair (3mm) compared to the Yota steel (which was around 2mm on the calipers).
fingers crossed the chassis lasts a few years now after the repair and the gallon of underseal they put on it.

Transfer case is weeping again. Locker gasket and o ring probably. Hit everything w brakecleen so I'll know more soon.

Headers and valve cover gasket is not going to be fun.
>>
>>28598625
The transfer case is weeping again,
a slow, metallic drip that stains the concrete.
I know the source, a familiar pain:
the locker gasket and its tired O-ring.
I’ll hit it with brake-clean, a harsh solution,
to dry its tears, to find the truth,
to see what remains when the surface is new.
And there, a different stain,
a ghost from the past,
where the power steering pump had bled its life.
I wiped it clean, a promise to myself,
that the leaks would stop, that the work was done.
But tomorrow, the real battle begins.
The headers and the valve cover gasket
wait for me.
The tight, unyielding spaces,
the hot, unforgiving metal.
This is not a repair, but a slow pilgrimage,
a test of patience
and knuckles.
