is it weird that i find the NC more desirable than the ND?
>>
>>28571647
it's a perfectly acceptable cope when you're poor
>>
>>28571750
Not him but I think I'd rather have any NC over an ND1 to avoid the transmission issues. I still prefer ND2/ND3, however.
>>
>>28571750
>>28571753
I just think the NC is more modifiable. You can really make it your own. The ND has the same problem as most modern cars, they’re too modern to modify in any meaningful way. Your ND will be the same as everyone else’s.
>>
>>28571647
NC doesn't have the chinkshit ricer styling plus it can actually take boost. They designed the ND to appeal to nu-male zoomer trannies like >>28571750 who thinks he's rich because he can afford a Miata lol, that's where we are at now.
>>
>>28571180
Shit. Sorry it's my first mg I made. Will do next time.
>>
>>28571647
Sorta same but not sure if it's cope either. I like the nc2/3 styling. Budget wise, I can either get an nd1 or an nc2 at the same price point. Idk honestly.

About halfway through the swap and no auto parts stores have a SPDT relay so I have to wait for Monday's delivery from amasuck. I hate that I will need to use 3 relays but if I ever want to go back to stock it's just remove and replace.
>>
>>28572066
Anything super different between nc2 and 3? Or is it just the bumpers
>>
>>28572071
Very small differences and yes mostly cosmetic. None are drivetrain related.
>>
>>28572066
I can buy anything up to an ND2 I just think I’d rather have an NC2/3 and customize it more with the end goal of the flyin Miata turbo kit.
>>
>>28572078
I just know the nc1 isn't forged
>>
>>28573430
Yeah that's why nc1s are dirt cheap, they're like 5-8k. The nc2 is much better but that bumps the price up to 10-15k
>>
>>28573435
If you’re lucky. Most of them for sale are by “I KNOW WHAT I GOT” type boomers who want $20k+
>>
>>28573441
Don't say that to me..I still have hope for a 12-13k nc2 next year

unfortunately even after replacing the exhaust gasket which blew out (which i needed to do anyway), the noise persists. this one:
https://i.4cdn.org/wsg/1754241813388620.webm
noise is most prominent when i come off the throttle at well over 30mph - maybe closer to 60.
but while poking around online for theories, i found pic related who said that when you come off the throttle on the NB, the propshaft lowers. is that the case? and if so, what components should i look for when i next jack up the car and look under?
>>
>>28573457
What's noise am I listening for?
>>
>>28573460
the DRRRR after passing over island.
>>
>>28573450
Maybe if it’s got 150,000 plus miles on it and a soft top. If you want a an nc2/nc3 grand touring with the PRHT it’s going to run you a bare minimum of $16k.
>>
>>28573487
I don't care about the phrt, I will spend the money for the hard top later on because of the better silhouette. I'm seeing 12-13k nc2 with 100k rn. 15k for 60k miles

Anon $3k difference is not worth another 75,000 miles on the car. Low mileage Miata’s will have been garage queens that likely never saw snow and salt, maybe not even rain. 100,000 car has been driven through all the Midwest weather and is going to have more rust.
>>
>>28573691
>>28573682
I see your point. Would you suggest flying out to purchase one from a different region in that case? I'd really like to not spend that much. Are they cheaper not in the Midwest?

That's when insurance quotes start getting cheap for men, so not that surprising. Every year now, you'll probably find they'll drop bit by bit.

Flying out costs money, hopefully the seller is near a major airport or you’re going to have to rent a car to get to them. If they are close to the airport you’ll have to pay for an expensive uber. If it’s far enough away to fly then you probably aren’t driving back in a single day so now you’re paying for a hotel for at least one night if not two. Since you won’t be able to inspect the car before spending the cash to fly there I’m assuming you’re going to pay for a pro to do a PPI on the car for you. There’s also potentially lost wages if you have to take time off work. Plus you have to figure that an extra 75,000 miles on the odometer is going to cost you some repairs sooner than later that would be less likely to happen on a lower mileage car. See how buying the “cheaper” car isn’t necessarily all the much cheaper?

Maybe you get lucky and the stars align for you but I’d rather spend a bit more for something that’s been someone’s fair weather weekend car which is relatively close to home. Also, do you have any idea what it costs to replace the soft top? How about buying a hard top shell? Might as well just get a lower mileage PRHT and save yourself a massive amount of headache and surprise expenses. There’s a reason they’re much more desirable.
>>
>>28573707
I appreciate the info, truly. Maybe the headache isn't worth the 3k saved after all,I didn't even think about the renting the car part honestly and was willing to trust the dealer on their inspection but it was a gamble as you said.

I still kinda do want the hard top though unless you can also talk me out of it. I believe it's 2800 from Mazda.

Not much to say.
>He loved cars
>He didnt care for his wife or daughter very much
He left in the middle of the night circa ~1950 and went to live in Wales with a new woman which sort of destoyed my great-aunt's life, as it was pretty difficult for a woman to support herself + a child back then. There was the extra complication of her being socially shunned as a divorced woman in the highly-religious English countryside.

In the end she found a job as a calculator for the local RAF base and managed to get her life back on track, but the rest of the family refused to ever talk to Fred again, or even mention him really.

When my dad told me about the car inheritance it was the first time I had heard Fred's name in my entire life.

>>28574429

anyway that's quite a story, i feel sorry for your great-aunt.
it reminds me of a carribean black kid my (long dead) grandparents adopted in the 1960s. i don't know much about it, only that he appears in a few family photographs but in his 20s he disavowed his adopted family (racial difference probably didn't help, but i don't know full story) and tried to find his biological mum back in the caribbean, but she rejected him. he's probably dead now.

>>
Well that was easily the biggest pain in the ass brake job I've ever done.
The pads were pretty much fused to the calipers. I had my gf press the brake pedal to push the pads out but two of them didn't move at all. Had to use my hex impact sockets as punches and hammer the old pads out. And for some reason the pads I got from flying Miata didn't comes with new shims so I had to scrape them with a razor blade and polish then with steel wool. The rotors were practically welded to the hubs with rust, 4.5 lb hammer still needed a hell of a lot of swings. Took almost a full two hours to change the front rotors and pads. The only thing that went smoothly was rattle gunning the lock tited caliper bolts out. Put anti seize on the hubs this time, idk why they don't do that from the factory

>>28575800
Fuckin yikes good job not crashing. You drive yours in the winter too?
I switched the the Wildwoods after a shop quoted me 700 for a brake job, but I didn't change the rotors because they looked fine at 15k ish. I guess they thought no one would drive a Miata in the winter so they didn't use coated rotors. Got some coated Bosch posiquiets, hopefully those handle it a little better
>>
>>28575159
>>28574777
Like I said I didn't end up picking it up because I still want to look at couple other cars. But I'm greatly considering getting one after the test drive. The test drive car was black but I probably would want a different colored one.

Better pedal feel for sure. They're much more rigid and the bp20 pads have a great bite. But how fast you stop is more a matter of tire and width. Stock brakes can still trigger the abs. The wilwoods are also lighter

alright gents, I got a new AFM, and appears to have solved my surging issue.
I went on a 45 minute cruze, no more surging.

It still sometimes dies at idle, and seems to be running a bit rich still.
otherwise no further issues. I am going to install the replacement intake I got that still has that resonator chamber, maybe that will help the stalling and cold idle.

No leaks from that rear main seal, been about 1200 miles on it so far. fingers crossed.
I do have a small oil leak coming from the front, might be the front seal, I did replace it. will need to investigate further

>>28581963
As someone who did exactly that, I would highly recommend that combo, except to only use the 6 speed if you swap the diff too for a 3.9 ratio at least, or go all out and ship a 3.6 from overseas. The 3.6 is what I did and it's absolutely the perfect gearing. The NA8 4.1 will be completely inappropriate with the shorter gearing the 6 speed has. There's a 3.3 gearset available too that fits too but I don't think I'd recommend it unless you make significantly more power than stock, the low speed performance would be unsatisfactory to put it nicely. I drove the 5 speed with the 3.6 (similar gearing to 6 speed+3.3, but a bit taller) for a few days before I could do the rest of the swap and it completely changes the character of the car for the worse.

Putting the powerplant frame back on the diff was the worst part, other than that pretty standard. If they haven't been out before, the axles won't want to budge out of the hubs easily, but there's room to pull them both all the way out of the diff if you disconnect the sway bar links and upper control arms from the knuckles without removing the axles from the hubs. Not a small job for sure, but I had it done in a few hours. Make sure to get an alignment afterwards.

Aren't hardtops ridiculously cheap in Europe compared to the states?

They are cheapest in the UK but after Brexit they are not really an option. In rest of EU I often see them for like 800-1000 but then I'd have to add shipping costs since they don't appear here in Finland often. I guess 1.2K would be more accurate price.

I think it'll be easier to drop the entire rear subframe.
You can clean everything up too, and paint it needed.

Also gl finding a 4.3
I ended up with a 4.1. Honestly could not tell the difference
>>
>>28573457
I still can't locate the source of the noise. And I've noticed a front wing has zero stone chip paint on the underside, leading to chip and rust damage and a small hole. So I need to take the panel off and either repair it or replace it.
>>

Every 5 speed US market NB has a 4.3. I have a 4.3 open that needs a home if anyone wants it.
>>
>>28584972
Pretty sure all na6 had 4.3 and all other 1.8 had 4.1 except autos which has a 4.3 open and a few special edition models that had a 4.3 lsd

Is this excess play on the propshaft? (2002 NB)
From the propshafter section in my Haynes manual:
>any movement at all in the joint is a sign of considerable wear
I haven't done any other testing other than in the webm.
>>
>>28587012
That's normal, what you don't want is movement between the driveshaft and the yoke coming out of the transmission. What your video shows is just turning the output shaft back and forth a little.
>>
>>28587022
That would be if it can be pushed up too easily?

Oh fuck, right, sorry. Thought you were the same guy asking what wrong. I'm a tit.

>>28587200
From your video, it looks like you have play in the output shaft itself, rather than the UJ. If that shaft is tight with whatever that shaft is going into, then the prop side of things is fine, but If you can feel the shaft moving independently of whatever it's going into (as if the splines on the shaft are worn and not tight), you have a problem. Linear movement of the whole prop is fine, as it's designed to move back and forth a little on the yoke, but lateral (twisting) play is not fine. There shouldn't be any play from the prop input / output shafts, at least not to that degree.

ND bros, how long did you make it before your AC needed a recharge?
I don't have one of the older models affected by the weak pipe fitting, but 4.5 years in and it's getting weak as hell, especially if I'm parked. Getting a recharge and the smairbag recall sorted out next week

Finally found the stupid front end clicking. When I rebuilt the front suspension the passenger strut lower bolt was tightened to mid spec but I used anti-sieze on every bolt. The bolt backed off just enough for the strut to get a bit of room to make a click noise when going over speed bumps and road imperfections. Damn, that was two months searching for it and I thought it would have been my FM adjustable end links. It was nice and cool outside so I went for an evening drive and fuck me are everyone's headlights on high or what

Whoever installed the top didn't pinch that listing (the fabric bit that's hanging) back into the metal retainer on the soft top frame bow well enough. Make sure the two pieces of the listing with velcro are straight with each other. Gently (with your fingers only) pry the retainer just a smidge more open all the way along its length, insert the flat plastic end of the listing into the metal retainer, and smush the retainer back down all down its length (again, with your fingers only, no tools).

The latches have a little bit of adjustment in them. There's also a little bit of side to side adjustment in the driver's side striker (the metal bit on the windshield frame the latch engages with) if necessary. Also, look at the latches on the top where they poke into the cupped part of the striker, there should be a little plastic cap on the soft top side. They crumble to dust over the years and fall off, and someone may have adjusted the top tighter to compensate.

How did you make sure the alignment was correct? My Haynes manual says the distance from PPF to frame rails should be 60mm to 72mm.
I won't be removing the PPF (I can see its out in your photo) but will it just be a case of loosening (not removing) the bolts and then adjusting the alignment before tightening the bolts? Or will they need to come out entirely?
>>
>>28590610
Also: what torque setting for the bolts if you remember?
>>
File: ppf_1.jpg (45 KB, 858x480)

>>28590688
Get a straight edge (a ruler, something skinny and flat like a serpentine belt tension tool, etc) and hold it flat to the frame rail with a jack, and one end of the straight edge going underneath the transmission where the PPF bolts to it. Loosen the three PPF bolts (but don't remove them. two big long ones, and one small one under the shifter). With another jack, raise or lower the transmission until the distance between the PPF and your straight edge is 60-72 mm and tighten the bolts down. Pic related has the torque specs.

Shin-etsu silicone grease for the weatherstripping. You might want to look into what's called "flocking" for your dashboard, you basically glue on a flat black suede powder that makes it non-reflective. Popular for rally cars.

rust.
get right down on the floor and look at those rear sills. if they no longer exist, either be good at welding or run away. not only that - it's also a sign of how well looked after they were by the current/previous owner. a lot of sellers probably have no idea how rusty the rear sills actually are.
for an example, a photo from an NB for sale i looked at two years ago - it sold quickly but i wouldn't have made an offer on it anyway. the rear sills weren't gone, but there was enough rust to suggest it was clean through and a welding job would be likely.
the NB i eventually bought had cooling issues (95% fixed now, i'm just wondering why the fan never comes on) but the rear sills were intact and the underside had plenty of treatment done by a previous owner.

400 grit is pretty standard. Go back and wet(!) sand it with more 400 until it's evenly cloudy move up to 800, then 1500, a liquid plastic polish, and finally seal it with clear. While you're wet sanding, make sure it stays soaked the whole time and rinse often. I use a spray bottle.

That's it I'm going crazy with rust prevention this year.

6 cans of cosmoline rp342, an undercarriage pressure washer foam cannon dealio, and 2 bottles of ammo boost anti salt.
Gonna do like 75% boost w/ 25% soap and blaster the under carriage. Then rinse it reaaaaally good, getting in all of the frame holes and such to get as much shit out as I can. Let it dry in the garage for a good 24 hours. Hit every orifice with the IFC, then tape plastic bags over the brakes and blast every thing else with the cosmoline

I'd never take this approach to rustproofing. My 2002 NB has rubberised underseal which has been on there for years, I don't know how long. By the time I bought the car it had peeled off in places so I had to remove some of it to gain access to where rust patches had formed - sand it off and put something else in.
There's always a big debate about which product to use but imo just inspect it every summer and apply new stuff. Most of the mystery aged rubberised underseal has worked fine (ofteh then I peel some of it off to inspect an area, the metal underneath is completely flawless), the only problem with ANY method of rustproofing is mindset.

I'm not a fan of the rubber coating either, I like seeing rust so I can deal with it.
Cosmoline is good because it's just a wax coating to keep surfaces dry.
Pic rel is what they say the internal frame cost does. It's for inside of body panels that you can't see or do anything about. And they claim the ifc plus is rated for 1k hours of salt spray. So you clean the rails as best you can, let it dry, spray it inside and let it do its thing against any rust that's already there. Then either do a cavity wax coating over that or just reapply that every so often as it breaks down from road salt.

Seems like the best option for areas you can't actively monitor or do anything about

Woke up and saw this shit on my 97. The lower drain holes and interior drain behind the back seats are totally clean

How could this have happened? Thinking to sand it down and seal for now, but i'd like to clean out any shit in the rocker panels too.

Maybe people just don't spec it out in their builds. I know the dealer I went through only went for safe colors like black, gray and sand.
One exception is the 30th anniversary they had in the lot.

You can buy replacement rockers and quarters but you're opening a can of worms, and if you don't have a welder there's not much you can do. Especially if it's your daily and you want time to do it right

I'm gonna keep it NA. I'll prob do the roadster sport header and mid pipe plus a fab9 versa tune first. Then get a new intake
>>
>>28603394
Why not run ITB's instead, then? Most ITB setups run *somewhere* around that price mark, and they're leagues better in value for money than some -1kg weight saving carbon airbox.
>>

Well, this is assuming you plan on buying that carbon intake at all. Reading back, I'm assuming you might be looking at something more reasonable?

Well intake is mostly because it's pretty and for the sound. The header and mid pipe is for the actual gains, and that's only like 1300

In other news, I got my AC recharged today and shocker, the AC still sucks ass. I guess it was only down 20% or so. I knew it was gonna be something else when they told me that
Pulled some of the dash apart, the blend door actuator is running smoothly, I can see the radiator fan kick on from the engine bay, but I can't tell if it goes into high when the AC is cranked.
Picrel is my condenser, it doesn't look great, but I feel like that can't be my only problem.
Maybe the fan control module (150$), maybe the expansion valve(50$ but $$$labor), maybe the ac pressure sensor (95$)
Not sure what the move is, don't wanna start playing guess and check

What did you use to clean your condenser? Did you flush it from the back? Toying with the idea of dropping my radiator so I can flush the condenser from behind but idk. If I'm doing that much maybe I get the csf single pass radiator---might have more airflow that can reach the condenser. I held a tissue up to my condenser and it barely stuck to it at idle with the AC cranked

my Miata makes a horrible belt squealing noise but only at start up.
new alternator, new water pump, new ps pump, new belts.
i think its the alternator belt, i loosened/tightened the ps belt and it made no difference.
previous owner used the 1.6 alternator mount, when i replaced the water pump, i switched to the 1.8.
it looks very flimsy and flexes. is that normal? its only attached with one bolt to the water pump.
>>
>>28603945
Alternator belt is super finicky about tension. You need to have it set just right. Get a Krikit gauge and check tension again.

Well cleaning the condenser with apc and a gentle hose didn't do anything

>is it weird that i find the NC more desirable than the ND?
I saw the ND and found out about Miatas, I really loved it. I bought an NC because it was basically 1/4 the price. But since owning it there are several people who have told me they prefer it to the ND in looks. I still don't agree, but the NC has grown on me. The NC does have a few advantages actually, much roomier interior with four cupholders (real ones), a glovebox, and hydraulic power steering that's superior to even the ND3. NC's also have basically no flaws. Every single year is dead reliable. You can swap in a 2.5 liter engine easily, and there are great turbo options. NC has a lot to love and it's a dramatic improvement on NA/NB in terms of engine and chassis.
>>
>>28607088
I bought one without knowing because my dad said he would teach me, but I ended up learning from YouTube. at least he drove it home for me when I bought it.

>>
>>28608067
I bought in 2018 back when ND's were still a big premium over NC. If I were buying today I'd probably buy an ND. The price delta is not huge especially if you're ok with ND1.

No, I just don't like how I feel disconnected with the ND. Granted I drove a ND1, but I think it's the throttle by wire. Not sure how to explain it but it feels like it makes adjustments to my input instead of doing what I tell it.

>im bored of having a convertible after 5 years. Just more things that can fail, more sun exposure (bad), and more noise (need earplugs for anything over 50mph)
I get that, I think about a coupe sometimes too, but then I have nice summer days where I put the top up for the highway trip out to the hills nearby, then drop it and cruise through the forested mountain roads, I can hear the birds in the canopy above, it's fucking great. It's really something else. If it gets too hot or cold I can put the windows up and use heater/AC, if I go on a highway I can put the top up real quick. It's really the best of all worlds. An ND RF is actually 1 decibel quieter than the GR86 on the highway, by the way, per Car and Driver testing.
>>
>>28610097
>need earplugs over 50mph

I have seen this statement in a few places but it surprises me, it really doesnt match my experience with my NA - I find its very quiet at 50 with the top down - even at 70 I can have an easy conversation with a passenger, albeit raising my voice a little of course. when you say its noisy, is it the road noise of the car itself, or the other traffic which causes the noise?

I did put fresh tyres on immediately after buying it, and I live in a posh rural part of bongland so there are high-quality roads and not much HGV traffic, so maybe these factors are what makes the difference in my case?
>>
>>28610202
Same, I usually have top down no earplugs at like 70-80mph, above that it's doable but a little uncomfortable. Also you can put the side windows up, helps a lot. I use earplugs on my motorcycle all the time though.
>>
>>28610202
The wind noise, how loud i have to turn the speakers up to hear music over it, etc.
The thing about hearing damage is it's a cumulative thing. Even if it's only a little uncomfortable, the damage stacks up over the years. I shoot a lot of guns too so I always have foamies in my car (I double up with muffs at the range)

I need to repaint my rocker guards on my NA.

What do people use? There seems to be no consensus.

The rocker paint seems to be the only thing preventing rocker rust, so I'm guessing something chip and rust resistant, but there's a texture from factory right?
>>
>>28602605
the journey begins

it looks like my shitty mexican paint job chipping has caused this bubble of rust, and it may yet be saved if this giant wall of text from boomer dot net is correct

I will take an endoscope and try to look inside the rocker for funsies

Yeah same here. It must be their 2nd car, and their dad has a roof. I don't get any real wind noise besides what I am expecting 50mph wind to sound like. Bro probably needs a louder exhaust to take his attention away. My quarter window vents do a fuckton to divert buffeting windshield though.

did you drive an ND RF or something? the road noise is terrible in that with the top down, but it's hardly noticeable in the ST with the windows up.

did they test it with the top up or down?
>>

>I have a miata but I'm tempted to buy a 2nd.
Would you be doing different things with the cars, or would they both have the same use case? If you have one, say, as a dedicated track car and the other as a daily, then fair enough, but having two cars sharing the exact same role just seems pointless to me.
>>
>>28613971
Up obviously.
>>
>>28610202
I have an RF, like >>28613971 guessed, so for me it's the wind noise. It's a noisy fucking thing with the top down on the highway, but it's really nice around town on a cool summer night. That's why I'm going through the effort to fab (other guy bending, me welding) a roll bar that allows the RF top to function unlike the hard dog that turns it into a coupe
