I'm looking to get my first car; won't use it very often. Mostly a toy but occasionally used on the weekend to do some motorway miles. Thinking of getting a classic because I'm a pretentious cunt and have fallen in love with my classic cycle (which I use on the daily, absolutely do not miss the mod cons of a newer cycle. Worth it for the looks.)

My question is how stupid an idea this is considering I cannot wrench shit; I barely get by on the old cycle. I live seconds away from a very good garage, though.

It's not a *bad* idea, per se, but it depends on what the car is, and how much money you make; your inability to wrench and tinker means even the smallest shit will require trip to the garage, eating into your wallet and reducing the amount of time you're able to drive. No idea what your budget is, but try and get a very nice and well sorted example of whatever it is you want, just so you don't have a "rolling restoration" that will spend most of it's time in the garage, rather than on the road.

You could probably find a well sorted Midget for that kind of money, so at that point it comes down to your income. If you can support the added maintenance costs, then a Midget would be a decent choice for a first classic, though if you're doing motorway miles, you should check what kind of RPM the engine is turning at 70mph. I don't think Midgets ever came with overdrives, so you could be at 4,000+ on the Motorway, which isn't exactly comfortable for you or the car.
>>
>>28585506
>people pour thousands into these things only to sell them on for a fraction of what they spent
I thinks it's a phycological thing. People are willing to spent shit loads on something that's already theirs and they're going to be keeping for a long period of time, but at the same time they're unable warrant spending a decent chunk of change on a car that's arguably past it's sell-by date, and will likely need more money spent regardless of condition.
>>
>>28585525
Never thought of the motorway RPM, I know they're mostly all just 4 speeds so that sounds about right. I'll have a sniff about. Thanks for the tips though

on an unrelated note, the headlight relay harness i got has somewhat shit terminations; in some of the terminals i see one or two strands not actually crimped down, it's rustling my jimmies but not sure if it'll warrant having to remake the entire harness.

My '79 280zx is losing a lot of power in the morning. Vacuum was super low, like in the 9inhg-12inhg range at idle. It gets better with heat but while it's cold part throttle actually gets it to rev higher than full throttle. Started along with a whistling sound that now turned into a hiss, smoke tested the intake side and there were zero vacuum leaks. Since the engine sounds somewhat muffled, I'm going to do an exhaust backpressure test. Hopefully that's it and I don't have to go messing around with rotting wires and connections. Wish me luck, br/o/s.

When I had the fairmonts I googled a 302 swap and the consensus was the 200 crossmember was different and all the rest were the same. Double checked it last year when i bought the sn95. 4.6 cross member is different you can keep the V6 one to do a 302 swap. Go to put the engine in the car, shifters ran into the back of the cutout and the mounts are over an inch in front of the k member. Go double check this, everyone says it fits. Pulled a v8 crossmember already from a fox, googled that, says in 88 they widened the crossmember an inch where the control arms mount, slot the rear flange and it bolts in. I got mine from a 87 MkVII so I'm looking into this, sounds weird, Googled struts, hubs, strut tower braces, the geometry never changed 79-93. Fuck it I have a measuring tape. They're identical. 22.75 in the front, 30 in the back, 15 at the rack. The rear flange is 2" wider on the sn95 no way in hell you're slotting the bolt holes. Trying to get a English speaking phone jockey at bmr or upr to tell me the mount height of their k members and I'll be buying one of them. you couldn't trust a Ford fanboy to tell you how many lug nuts their car has

cordless impact (18v mid torque or more powerful is essential if you deal with rust)
cordless ratchet (this saves you so much goddamn time)
impact extensions
set of impact sockets
general socket and wrench set
pick set
C clamp, or two
hammer(s) and mallet(s)
screwdrivers (and get a long one too, surprisingly useful)
remote spring clamp pliers if you deal with spring clamps on hoses
crowbar/pry bar
a piece (or pieces) of hard wood for hammering on or other uses
>>
>>28590123
thanks a lot
i also forgot to ask, whats a good vacuum to clean a car's interior? either battery powered or able to be powered from the 12V car outlet, but if something is really good i might consider using an extender from my house's outlet
>>
>>28590123
Don't start with electric wrenches. Feel is an extremely important part of mechanical work, and you're going to cross-thread and strip a lot of stuff that you wouldn't using a manual ratchet that you can feel when something isn't right. If you've got large stuff or things that you know will loosen and tighten properly, an impact is ok. I only use impact on large frame mounted type stuff, never on mechanical stuff with the engine or brakes or drive line. Besides, do some physical work so you don't look like a skinny twink or fat hambeast.
>>
>>28590123
Also you need a good quality hydraulic floor jack, 4 jack stands, and a few bottle or scissor jacks.
>>
>>28590167
>I only use impact on large frame mounted type stuff, never on mechanical stuff with the engine or brakes or drive line
impact is fine to remove, unless of course the service manual explicitly states to not use an impact tool.

what I've actually done since getting it is:
clean it, replace the clutch, fix the fucked brakes, put e30 bbs wheels on it, put kw coilovers that make it miserable to drive around town, and let it sit (because it's miserable to drive)

It currently doesn't run because it needs the fuel lines cleaned out.

I just don't want to use up my free assistance for the year or whatever just in case I actually break down on the road and need a tow.

Maybe I should have called them from the start. apparently they can send someone out for "minor repairs" and save me a couple bucks because I'm pretty poor and I don't wanna buy an impact wrench yet that costs a third of what the car cost until I sell my blood or something

USAA towing really is badass.
I went to a coworkers dad's place and bought a truck sitting in a field on 4 flat tires that was like 80 miles away.
Told.him id be back the next day.
Put it on my insurance that night.
Got a free tow in the morning.
>>
>>28594105
USAA now only covers up to 50 miles.

I never actually use roadside assistance for breakdowns, only for vehicles I purchase that don't run. They also do not like to tow vehicles to residential addresses.
>>
>>28594147
the only tow they refused was to tow it to a junkyard, every time i towed it, it was to my house. they'll tow over 50 miles but they make you pay the difference, which is pretty cheap.
>>
>>28594147
>>28594154
Ive never paid for a distance over 50 miles.
Although I havent gotten a long distance tow in awhile and I know they've changed a few things. I used to get tows on any vehicle but now it has to be a vehicle on my policy, maybe the distance change was part of that.
>>
>>28594154
It was $3.75/mile extra over 50 per their contractor. The extra fee is dependent upon the contractor, so it varies.

I have gotten tows home through them, but it was like pulling teeth.

It's under $120/year for 4 100-mile tows from Better World Club, which is cheaper than a single 90-mile tow from USAA in case I break down in Dallas or Houston.
>>
>>28594165
does their towing cover duallies? USAA wont insure any of the ones ive owned, recently i was in a parking lot for 6 hours trying not to call a tow
>>
>>28594169
Not if the wrecker driver declines it. I had a wrecker decline my hearse and USAA says they don't cover "Commercial" or "Heavy Duty" vehicles.

Keep in mind, their towing was great until these changes that are all within the last few years.
>>
Better World Club will cover duallies and RVs with their deluxe package.

>>28594177

I want to replace the rear diff in my 1976 Corvette with a more aggressive differential. I have plans to upgrade the engine and make it worthy of the small block title and pull this gay smog era shit off it, but there isn't much point in upgrading the front and keeping the back stock as I will just nuke something back there when I first get it set up. It has the TH350 and I have no desire or plans to switch to a 4speed manual or auto with OD. I am looking at 3.55, 3.70, and 3.90 rear diffs. Anyone have any experience? I posted before but life got in the way. I have used calculators and I find the RPMs, but real world input is appreciated. I mostly want to have that hood up, kicked in the back of your seat, tire melting fun of older cars, but also be able to handle driving on the back country roads here (50-65mph) without being miserable. The 3.90 is tempting for the visceral feel, but the 3.70 would be easier on the highway, but may leave me wanting moar. After this gets beefed up, the next is new cylinder heads, cam, stall converter, possibly stroke it to a 383. I am too beefy to get a 4 speed manual put in, these cars were made for the delicate manlets of 1970.

I had to lookup the 0-60 mph of a 2015 Nissan Altima with the CVT. It’s a bit over 8 seconds.

>that beats my Datsun!
>>
>>28596898
Final drive ratio will depend entirely upon the specs of the engine you choose to build. More specifically the camshaft specs, but that will be related to displacement/heads/etc of the rest of the engine.

Start thinking about the engine more and what you want its characteristics to be and that will lead you to a cam spec that would be appropriate. The cam manufacturer will have a recommendation for RPM at 60mph in Direct for that cam. You will then be able to choose a final drive ratio that complements the engine.
>>
Being given a 71 fiat 124 spider. Sat since the 80s in various garages, doesn’t run and the motor is potentially seized. If I can’t (or don’t want to) get the original motor going, what would be a good swap? Lots of people say honda motors, but I’m not really into those.
>>
>>28596898
3.55s, posi, the torque converter to match your engine/rear end combination, and a nicely warmed over 350 would be tits.
>>
>>28596898
Just my personal opinion, but more aggressive diffs aren't as much fun. I'm already in top gear at 40mph with my 4 speed manual in my 1973 Stingray with an uncucked 383. Even just trying to get to speed on the highway ramp today, I was starting to fishtail in 3rd on slightly-wet roads. You got plenty of juice.

Conversely, I had an aggressive diff on my tracker, but that was so I could put huge tires on it after I lifted it.
>>
>>28593596
just. JUST.
my new cordless impact didn't budge the lug nut a single bit. So now I have to destroy the nut to get it off, or have it towed to get ripped off by a tire shop for a car I bought to wrench on myself, but whatever, I guess.

If the tire shop will get rid of those JUNK security nuts and replace them with regular lug nuts for less than it'll cost for me to buy a lug nut removal kit, I'll just do that, but I might still be able to fix this myself.

>>
>>28597148
A 1.8 BP engine from a miata seems like the obvious option, though I think a V6 would be a better idea; a Dino V6 would be incredible as it'd be a period correct choice that was actually used by Fiat at the time, but I dread to think what that cost. The GM V6 is probably the best choice for burgers, and maybe the Jag/Ford V6 if euro?
>>
>>28597906
I’ve heard some people say a gm v6 like 3800, which would be pretty cool. If I could get one of the supercharged ones that would be cool. Part of me kind of thinks putting in a tdi would be sick as fuck.

I'm now having similar problems with my 500. Honestly, I've had cement mixers and lawn mowers with smoother and easier running engines. As >>28598857 said, check timing first as it's quite simple to do. I'm not sure if this carries over to your 600 engine, but another thing to check is (assuming you car has one) the carb spacer. The 500's and 126's have a plastic spacer between the carb and the head, and over time they become brittle and split when people reassemble them. If your engine has that spacer, check that it's not sucking in air from anywhere, be it from the gaskets or from damage.

Crossmember about to go in for the last time. 302 looks like it sits super far forwards in the engine bay, you can touch the bell housing bolts without all the crap in the way.

>>28597689
Yeah, the more I am looking at it the more it seems like the 3.90 would not be very fun outside of town. The 3.70 is becoming more and more appealing, but the 3.55 is also still in the picture. I really need to find a local car show or meet up to see if I can pick any of the boomer's brains
>>
>>28599433
>any experience with the 3.55 anon?
negative, but I have a set of 3.73s in my project (full disclosure it isn't on the road yet so take what I say with a grain of salt). The calculators say it's going to be screaming at 70mph with a three speed auto no OD. A friend of mine has his rear end set up with 3.80s, but he also has a T5. He says it's ALMOST too much.
>>
>>28599441
with my 727, 3.23 gearing is already kinda high, 70 mph will see almost 3000 rpm
>>
>>28599474
Yeah, the calculators put me a little over 3200. also 727
>>
>>28599433
3.5 is a compromise between 3.7 (which is a compromise from 4.10) and 3.3 (which is a compromise from 2.7) it's the ultimate meh gearing that doesn't do anything really well, but does everything ok. 3.5 owners have commitment issues.

oh i thought you had a gm box in that corvette, interesting choice. i know a few of the mopar c body owners use 2.94 gearing for comfier highway cruising. but rpm calculator shows that with the 727, at 70 mph it's only 2500 rpm, thought it'd be lower than that
>>
>>28597702
I didn't even end up needing this, the tire shop near me said they'd charge me $20 so I just used one of my free tows for the year from the auto club and had them take out ALL the security nuts. I had them replaced with regular nuts as a cautionary measure in case I get another flat, and I had the worn out spare tire replaced.

Honestly, I could have done it myself, and in general I would prefer to do stuff myself, but with my limited budget and tools it made sense this time to pay someone to do it. Drove the car for the first time in a few weeks, finally.

Long-term, front spindle swap and dual chamber master/disc brake upgrade and corresponding rear end so that the wheels still match. Other than that, fixing the AC, hearer core, rebuilding all the window motors, new headliner, fix some seat damage, light window tint, and a better stereo.

>>
>>28604877
master you can at least get it off rockauto or somewhere cheaper. can use the 1-1/8 bore units that were on the 67 year models.
i'm gonna use the wilwood 260-10922 in my setup because that already has 3/8-24 inverted flares, no tube nut adapters needed.
although if you don't want to use a prop valve, look at reducing the rear wheel cylinder bores. i know the A and B bodies it was common to downsize from the stock 15/16 cylinders to 13/16. I think the imperials have much larger bores though but in any case, if you find your rears locking up too soon on a skid pan, might be worth looking into going down a size or two.
>>
>>28604895
I'd rather just skip straight to the proportioning valve; a "one and done" approach.
