Took a ride up to the top of pikes peak today. Pretty nice ride, the dumbasses who drive slow as fuck and don’t get the hint to pull over and let the 1/4 mile of cars and motorcycles backed up behind them are annoying though… as is the case with any mountain riding. I’ve gotten into the habit of just passing when I see an opportunity despite the double lines.

Nah, the way the straps sit they’re well clear of the belt and sprocket. Worse case scenario, if one if the straps breaks and somehow gets into the belt it’d pull out of the bag and not cause any issue, the straps loop through a couple of holes in the back of the bag and are not affixed directly to the bag in any way - I imagine for the reason you state.

Only bad thing about the bag is if I have a decent amount of weight in it such that it sags then it’ll actually drag a little bit near full lean, you can see the fraying on the corner.

You can make the argument that just about any dirt bike that's intended for pure offroad use will have slow gearing, and not allow you to go over ~70mph. Which you wouldn't do in dirt anyway, because any knobby worth using would be useless at those speeds and start tracking wherever the fuck it wants.

Average speed of baja 1000 winners is typically under 50mph, with them only opening up in sections of flat, straight areas. Anything technical and they're going just as slow as you'd expect.

I didn’t say it was a good idea. Why is it hard to believe though? It was on sandy valley road west of vegas. Long road through the Mojave, there was a truck going ~50 that I caught up to and was tried of being in the massive dust plume it kicked up. I got over 100 passing it then just maintained 60-70mph until I reached sandy valley. My point is that knobby tires aren’t necessarily squirrelly over some arbitrary speed.

Near the top of pikes peak some people freak out and get really scared of driving on the edge. I was behind an suv today for a little bit who had 1/4th of their vehicle over the double stripes and into the opposing lane the entire time unless someone was coming, I think they were just that scared of being near the edge of the road on the downslope side. Some people also get altitude and/or motion sickness.

I've looked into Royal Enfield because I'm poor, the thing I hate about them is they all have these fucking retro boomer designs, my issue with the Chinese is they mostly make small displacement bikes, at this point China does well at making small 50-250cc motorcycles, I've had a Lifan bike for years now, but they don't make anything more than that. I think even CFMOTO only makes like 450cc at most. I've wanted to upgrade to at least 500cc but I'm poor and have to save up for a Japanese bike because the chinese don't make those bikes and the Indians do, but they're all in old ass designs.

This
>Six gears
>carbed
>lighter
>faster
best I can say for the XT250 is that the gear ratios are way taller. So your 4th and 5ths can hit most of the speed of the 250 but you're still fucked not having a sixth gear. Also EFI is cringe unless you like waiting weeks for parts from Japan to replace it because one of the plastic pieces broke out in the mud (they're almost 90% plastic that bakes in the sun)
>>
Seriously I don't get why people like EFI. It's a shitty solution to government overreach on engines so small that they make a fraction of the pollution that your average Ford F-250 makes. There isn't a premium EFI for bikes, they're made to be the cheapest sensor kit ever and are notoriously dogshit to replace. Plus you can't even tune the fuckers without paying for expensive remap kits, something that should be stock with the bike if bike manufacturers gave a shit about consumers which they don't.

Meanwhile the carb is still among the most reliable piece of any bike. Only failing if it sits in old fuel for 3 years, which guess what EFI does too.

Do you guys still buy motorcycles used? Whenever I try looking for a motorcycle on marketplace it's all fucking scamming shitskins trying to sell stolen bikes with no titles with the very short description written in Spanish, or claiming they're selling brand new bikes for $1,000.

I've had 2 XT250s blow themselves up on me within the first 2 years of standard riding despite perfect maintenance intervals. You should have bought a klx300. XT250s are 80s shitbikes and not in a good way, they don't like revving for any period of time and they're not made for highway use at all.

Is there a place to meet up with riders that isnt' fucking facebook? I got rid of that shit years ago and making a new one is a pain in the ass if Facebook doesn't like you for any reason (your face is too similar to someone else, your IP is dynamic, your phone is used, etc.)
Trying to make a new account just to look up local riding groups has been a fucking nightmare

This is another reason I want to avoid Facebook: There are legit uses but almost all of it are misuse of the system, and none of them ever get banned for it. There was an obvious smash-and-dash deal on marketplace near me with a salvage title and I got suspended for reporting it.

It may be hard to believe but I've found great success with Craigslist recently even if the selection is limited and the site is nearly dead.

NTA but Yahama had this problem notoriously a little while ago
https://www.topspeed.com/motorcycles/motorcycle-news/yamaha-issues-recall-of-xt250-over-multitude-of-problems/
IDK if it affects the wr250r but it was enough for them to recall the xt250.
>According to Yamaha, the problems with the XT250 were discovered when some bikes experienced a rash of problems when they run in the top revs for prolonged periods of time. Among the most important issues include unforeseen heat that could melt the bike’s air induction hose. In the event this happens, the bike’s fuel injection sub-wiring harness could become exposed to exhaust gases and the harness wires’ plastic insulation could melt after that. Once melted, there’s an increased possibility of a short circuit, which could then stall the engine and cause a crash.

The folly of putting plastic shit on or near exhaust gas temperatures.
>>
I got my first service done at an official Yamaha dealership for my R9, and now neutral feels different, as if the gears were dragging against the oil. Am I imagining things or did the dealership just not change the oil?
>>
>>28598137
Did they replace or service the clutchpack at all? If so it has to break in.

look at the oil and see if it's a clear to amber color, if it's black take it back.
>>
>>28598143
Not that they mentioned, the 1000km service should only be an oil change.
I'll check the oil, sadly the r9 only has a dipstick and no window.

Two completely different engines. The component mentioned is a smog/emissions cheat that cleans up unburnt fuel in the exhaust by pumping fresh air into the exhaust side of the engine to hopefully burn it off while it's still hot. If they routed the rubber hose poorly, it would make sense that it melts and then starts spitting out exhaust instead of getting force fed air. This whole system can be deleted from the bike.
>>
>>28598161
Thats the smog pump, right?

Holy shit, how do I stop it from happening to me? I'm one of the other XTfags in this thread and my Bike is probably much newer, but what exactly needs to happen to improve the life of this engine?
Or is it just a ticking time bomb that's based on how hard I ride it and I should ride it until it dies?
>>
>>28598234
Just ride it until it dies and get something else. Preferably a crf300l or klx300. They're kind of time bombs due to how they're built. Even with rod knock though, despite how fast it progressed, that could could have spit out another 25k miles with rod knock for all I know. I know of a chevy vortec engine )way different I know) going 80k miles more after developing rod knock. Ran like shit but ran. On an old work Chevy express that they didn't want to fix and just wanted to replace entirely.

I rode that second xt250 light 90% of the time, was very critical about the break in period and maintenance, and it was a newer 2022 model. After a couple trips to the next town over (about 70 miles) holding it at 60-65mph, it decided it didn't like holding those speeds, despite the bike seeming to handle the revs very well.

It's a tractor, for around town and VERY light offroading. I'll never buy another xt250 again. Meanwhile there's people doing numerous saddle sore 1,000 mile runs in under 24 hours on crf300l rallys (keeping near max rpm the whole way), and klx300s are built by design to sit at high rpms for long periods, to the point you could pin the throttle offroad and keep it there.

Xt250s should be kept under 60mph unless you're avoiding an accident and should be babied, nothing else makes sense to me for them, they're touted for their reliability by yamaha fans but they're truly pieces of shit.

Duke 390 - too gaudy, plus Chinese
Svart401 - too tall, plus Chinese
Triumph 400 - I don't like these for no reason
Cb/r 300r, z400, mt03 - I don't want one because everyone has one. I know one of these is the best option but I won't buy.

GRR is probably your best bet, if you want it for offroad, pick the Himmy but PLEASE change those shitty tires unless you want to break a leg when that fat hog of a bike falls over you, and before buying any bike, specially a RE, get enduro boots, its cheaper than paying hospital bills.

I was having problems with my bike stalling when coming to an abrupt stop even with the clutch pulled in. Naturally I pulled the carb to clean out the pilot jet. All the jets were pretty clean, but I noticed some weird jetting. The pilot/slow jet was the stock 65S (most everybody switches it out to a 68S or larger depending on elevation after uncorking the bike), but the main jet was a 185. That's way bigger than people usually go with the main. So I was both running lean at idle and rich under throttle. I should have checked that out sooner. Now I'm waiting for some jets and other assorted parts to see if I can get it set up right. Including another CDI that raises the rev limiter ~1100 rpm and has a more aggressive timing curve.

Motorcycles are a luxury item in America. As this country slowly devolves into a subscription based "you'll own nothing and be happy" technocratic hell hole, I wonder if motorcycles will become more popular. Cars are unbelievably expensive now and leases are more popular than ever.

Then the closest thing would be a RE Hunter for you, those are pretty decent for beginners, the only problem is that they are somewhat heavy.

Otherwise, look into the Vitpilen instead of the Svartpilen, the Vit one is more street oriented, the Svart is more of a scrambler that can take up non paved roads, yet both are great for a starting bike.
Also a dual sport can do fine on the highway, it just depends of the model, a lot of people say this since they had a CRF 300 Rally and that one is indeed undercut for doing a lot of miles, but something like a KTM 390 Enduro R would probably do well, and then there's ADV bikes which do fine for both, they can suck if your offroad is on the high difficulty, like hill climbs with rocks and no paths whatsoever.
>>
>>28598541
Triumph 400s are decent option too. I don't like Hunter, IDK if you guys get Classic 350, that is the one that I'd get.
>>
>>28598487
Motorcycle companies refuse to offer nonluxury/toy bikes at reasonable prices. The low cc market has been left to die. Honda doesn't even advertise the metropolitan. The actual licensing process for bigger bikes is archaic though with many cities not even offering consistent msf courses. And nobody is going to consider it when they have to travel out of their way(on a bus or an uber) to an msf course that costs $500 when there's not even a solid entry level

Deep down they are pretty much the same, its just the looks of the bike that change, the Hunter one indeed has a much more comfy seat, something your backpack will thank you for it if ya got one.

Triumph 400s are a bit like KTM/HQV, so its similar to either picking a Vitpilen, a Svartpilen or a 390 Adventure X these days. Probably the bigger advantage of Triumphs would be the rider position being a bit better vs the KTM ones, though if you want a more sporty position, Dukes are great for that without over going full sportbike position.

Best thing is that you go see them in person and take a seat on them, then decide.

I don't see bikes becoming the standard transportation like they are in developing countries. I think Americans will just go further into debt to finance their cuckovers and truggs. Why not? High speed limits make low CC bikes less viable. Much of the country doesn't have the weather to ride all year. The average vehicle is much bigger in the US, which along with higher speed limits, makes 2-wheeled transportation extremely scary to most.
>>
>>28598741

>>

NTA but I wanna chime in that the gear driven cams have been known to even exceed 300k miles. MILES.

There was a forum post of an RC51 rider that bought fresh off the lot in 2000' and racked up 332k miles before said bike got hit by a red light runner. It was dyno'd every 100k and never skipped a beat (with proper maintenance as with any bike)

The 5th gen vfr rocks those same gear driven cams, just with two extra clyinders a singled sided swingarm with 120-130hp to the rear wheel (varies if you got a CAT or a free flowing non-crossing exhaust and having the most comfortable yet fun riding position known to man.

>whats happen
Well amidst installing the tail tidying, seems the two main bolts with cutouts for the locking mechanism somehow got bent to fuck
Couldnt reseat them, the wire would not function the mechanism
I basically pry at it for 2 hours to get enough leverage; luckily the seat rebent because its mostly abs plastic and is malleable
So eventually i can either reorder a new housing or modify it to not be gay, for now its very not gay and much easier to remove
Idk something mustve happened during the power commander incident i guess
But we achiwved what we came out to do so thats all that matterdaddies

I wonder how bad it's gonna look on the inside... at least rebuilding a motorcycle carb is fun and easy.

That’s because the v engine configuration is indisputably the best one there is
45 or 90 ideally, and the vstrom is 90
