Downgrade to an A6, downgrade to an older gen, downgrade to either I4 1.9TDI or I5 2.5TDI. Upgrade to a wagon. *siiiiip* Yeah that's a peak Audi.
>>
If you were rich enough to afford money pit, such as 20yo S8 or W12, you wouldn't ask. Go with 4.2 MPI, you won't miss much, except for service costs (which will be big anyway).
>>
>>28598136
Those old TDIs have like 1 million kms by now.

>>28598180
I’m optimistic. I think people are overreacting the problems with these A8s.
>>
>>28598005
Pre-FSI V8 if I were to actually buy one, because those are relatively trouble-free timing belt-driven engines.
V10 and W12 have a much higher cool factor, but when something goes wrong they're way harder to fix.
>>
>>28598207
Another 1mil ain't going to be shit to them
>>
>>28598211
The V10’s sound is out of this world. I’ve heard from a friend that it physically makes your penis bigger overtime.
>>
Has anyone here owned v10 s6? I really want one but idk if my wallet would agree with the purchase
>>
>>28598220
Yeah the split-pin V10 is one of the best sounding engines Audi's ever made, it's right up there with the rally Quattros and well above the R8. Problem is it's an Audi FSI V engine, so it's got that insane timing and accessory drive on the back of the block, the AC compressor is driven by a jackshaft off the oil pump, the tensioners will crap out on you, the intake gets clogged with carbon buildup, and there's that fun high pressure fuel system to deal with.
Not to mention, the 40V is no slouch in the sound department either:

V8 is the superior choice. A perfect balance of power and practicality. Anything with more than 8 cylinders gets too complex, too many moving parts to break. Too much fuel consumption. If you need more power and your solution is to go beyond 8 cylinders, then you are bad at engineering.

What is wrong with Germany?

W8
>>
>>28598426
I like that but that model is basically non-existent anymore.
>>
>>28598005
the pre direct injection w12 is actually a pretty reliable lump if serviced regularly. 420hp phaetons are the best.
>>28598426
the w8 is also cool, to bad it hardley makes any power because its forced to use the audi a4 v6 intake system. there were passat r43 prototypes with twin throttle bodies that made around 375-400 hp, same as a e39 m5. speaking of which there is one surviving e39 m5 with a w10 engine that never made it into production
>>
>>28599661
would the V8 be a total money pit?
>>
>>28599663
the port injected engines themselves are usually not the problem. getting the engine out to work on other things is what makes ownership of these cars difficult. lamba sensors are an engine out job for example

>>28599665
>lamba sensors are an engine out job for example
oh shit

also 20 year old air suspension car will 100% fail

$1500-$2500+tip per corner

>>28599706
That's pocket change for americans
>>
>>28598426
I do admire VWs bloody mindedness to never make a RWD car, to the point of developing a completly new engine layout just so they can continue shoving front diffs into all their cars.
>>
>>28599914
rwd VWs are called porsches

V10 or nothing. There is zero reason to put up with Audi bullshit for anything less than the musical sounds of a V10. You want luxury? There are luxury cars that aren't such a pain in the dick. You want fast? There are fast cars that aren't such utter bastards. There is no reason to put up with an Audi that doesn't have a V10, because you can't afford anything good with a V10 and V10 Audis are the cheapest available.
>>
>>28599706
Just did the air suspension on mine. Bilstein makes the OE air struts. Audi wants ~$1,700 for each front unit. Billstein sells them for $1,000. You can go Arnott or Chinese for $700 or less. I went with Bilstein, OE without the brand tax. The job itself is super easy, takes maybe an hour per side if you’re going slow.l and need to double check everything

>set suspension to service setting
>pop hood
>jack car up
>remove wheel
>disconnect sensors, air suspension plug, and air hose
>unbolt suspension level sensor from lower control arm
>support steering knuckle with spare jack or caliper hangers
>unbolt upper control arms from knuckle
>unbolt seay bar from strut mount
>unbolt strut from top of strut tower
>use special spreader tool (cheap socket wrench oval thingy) on strut mount and remove air strut
>installation is reverse of removal

Just make sure to use fresh hardware, correct torque, and only torque down the sway bar and control arm joints with the wheel hub at the correct reference level (measure distance from top of wheel arch to center of wheel hub before hand). You can use a jack under the lower front control arm to get the hub at the correct reference height before you torque everything down if you don’t have a 4-post lift.

Dealership will want to charge $500+ per side for labor. So $4500 for a mechanic or dealer, or $2000 if you do it on a Saturday morning.

The older timing belt 4.2 is still retarded with VW's favorite "secondary timing chain driving the other cam" instead of just having the timing belt drive everything
>>
>>28598005
4.2TDI, petrol engines are made from aluminium
>>
>>28601744
>secondary timing chain driving the other cam
>It's okay when the japs do this
And don't you start about MUH NIPPON STEEL when the 4afe clankers with their secondary timing chains looser than my ex gfs pussy twist the camshaft sprockets off or the suzuki vitara shitheaps send their secondary chain through the block because fuck me I guess.
>>
>>28601775
Don't put words in my mouth faggot, it's retarded when goyota does it too
>>

At least you can actually get to these with the engine in the car when the tensioners inevitably die.

S85s sound better though
>>
i6 or nothing
>>
>>28602729
No they don't. The E60/63 is the worst sounding V10 car ever made. They are just pure rasp with very little howl.
>>
>>28603194
This is the worst post on /o/ right now. S85 sounds like an actual F1 car, especially near redline. Audi V10 sounds good, but way too deep. Only car that sound better than the E60/63 are the LFA and Carrera GT. Compare here.

You can absolutely get that V10 howl out of the Audi block. The stock exhaust is just lacking.

I found this on Marketplace for $2000 dollarydoos. Really rare car here in Australia but it's the 3.7 V8 not the 4.2 and slushbox instead of manual. Also doesn't run.

I have a really weak spot for old luxury cars but I've never owned an Audi. Please, talk me out of ever buying one.
>>
>>28603451
These are cool. Incredible rustproofing, smooth comfy V8, doesn't have the slushbox flaw of the D2 A8s, electronics aren't stupid complicated yet.
Early 4.2 should be externally identical, should you ever want to swap one in.

Good fucking luck finding parts for it though.
