What do you think about drive by wire?
>>
No thanks, I'll keep my cable.
>b-b-b-but it simplifies the idle valve!
If I ever go standalone ECU I will build myself a choke cable to manually bump my cable throttle wheel open for cold starts.

I'm a wrenchlet looking for a used medium expense car and every modern auto transmission car I've tried has this and it sucks. I'm not used to it which makes it feel even worse

Why can't we at least get a resistive spring to make it feel a little better.
It sucks. Everything sucks.

Are you retarded? It's night and day in difference. With a cable your foot opens the throttle right then and there and with drive by wire you foot input is merely a suggestion to the ECU. You have to put the ECU into sport or sharp mode, if it even allows for that, just to have normal throttle operation. The default state is to ignore driver input and gradually open the throttle to sluggishly take off from a stop for muh empeegees.
>>
>>28599754
when you make a car this electrified, you might as well make it work like a diesel-electric locomotive and decouple the entire engine from the wheels, using electric motors instead, with the engine acting as a generator
>>
>>28599990

Funniest part is when you jump from a laggy drive by wire to cable throttle body you have to reel back in your aggressive throttle inputs.
>>
>>28599754
Just like wireless mice, the technology has evolved enough to be superior if done right but most manufacturers are too cheap to put in the work.

It's fine if done right, but I very much prefer the pedal feel of a cable throttle. I find many DBW pedal setups way too light and "floaty", *especially* when it comes to the brake pedal. When I occasionally have to move someone's new car, I will always end up nearly planting myself through the windshield when trying to come to a gentle stop.

brake pedals are like clutches, they bite different in every car, also most DBW is only for the throttle, you are the retard here
>>
>>28599812
my 05 Civic has a cable which makes the response really sharp, giving the relatively weak engine some pep. My 08 Rabbit has a dbw which makes the relatively strong engine feel lazy.
>>
>>28599754
I'll DBW swap and NA ITB build my 2JZ. With a Link ECU and fully programmable pedal map, I can make it feel however I want, and be as direct as I want. Gives me idle-up and cruise-control for free.

>they bite different in every car
Most mechanically linked boosted brakes feel quite similar, with a few exceptions, but the difference in brake by wire to mechanical is comically noticeable. It's easy to get used to once you're aware of it, but there's very little progression to a brake by wire system when compared to a mechanical setup, and the pedal doesn't stiffen up like a mechanical setup, so you're expecting some sort of feedback that just never comes. Not until the car lurches to a stop, anyway.

>also most DBW is only for the throttle
Unless they're hybrid or electric, as with the modern cars I've had the displeasure of moving or driving.
>>
>>28600217
I had the opposite. My cable operated cars were somewhat lazy, where as my DBW car was violently sharp. It's all down to mapping.

>>
>>28599812
I can feel the half second of lag in my kia.
My Miata, Fit, and mrs all respond instantly.
>>
>>28599990
For factory ECUs maybe. With a Haltech you can make it behave like a cable/carbie throttle. The throttle lag is purely there as an emissions reduction mesure fromt the OEMs. Not all drive by wires need to be like that.
>>28599760
pants on head retarded. I went from twin carbies+manual choke to standalone ECU and EFI, wouldn't go back. Wish I had drive by wire too.
>>
>>28601482
miatas and fits have had electronic throttles since the 00's
>>
>>28601488
Specifically what is retarded about it niggerboy?
>>
>>28600217
Funnily if you'd stayed with Honda and picked up an 08 Civic, those actually have a pretty great DBW system
>>
>>28599754
>throttle by wire
fine, i dont care, cant tell the difference
>drive by wire
heeeelllll nah nigga

anything that can be controlled electronically can be disabled or manipulated. i do not want that thanks.

Has to be bait.
>>
>>28599754
In stock form, in a lot of cars, fucking awful.
Yes, it simplifies the idle circuitry. Yes, it smooths your inputs for better empeegees. It also means you need to fucking floor the damn thing if you want it to actually give you some semblance of power, and makes blipping the throttle on downshifts needlessly difficult.

THERES NEVER BEEN ANY TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION THAT SUCKS, NUH UH NEVER EVA.

>What do you think about drive by wire?
I understand why they did it, and the advantages, it offers, but I still regret it
>>
>>28599760
why would you need to? fuel priming, crank fueling, and timing can accomplish the same thing for cold starts. IAC tables take over when up to certain temp.
>>
>>28601494
Firstly we don't talk about the NC.
Secondly it's an NA
Thirdly Fits didn't even exist before 00 and mine is a cable. You probably have a turd gen or are thinking of them.
>>
It kinda sucks. My previous cars (years ago) were all normal and I miss the progressive pedal action where the solenoid or whatever opens a little bit more when you push the pedal more.
With my newish drive by wire car - a little throttle pedal gooses is too hard, and then 20-30% of the way in the solenoid is fully open and there's no difference between half pedal down and pedal fully down - wasting the pedal and hurting my feet
you really notice it if you have to drive extra slow behind someone who is going below the speed limit - hurts the fuck out of my feet
>>
>>28601870
You need to bump up the idle on cold starts brother, everyone knows this

Exactly
All these computerlets don't understand the beauty of these.
>>
>>28599754
My favorite part about driving newer cars is how blippi g the throttle does fuckall and the newer the car the fuckall-ier it does, the average 2025 car won't even respond at all with a fast blip
>>
Nothing wrong with TBW, it's just most cars have terrible implementations on purpose for emissions reasons.
Just look at motorcycles, most new sport bikes have TBW and also have phenomenal throttle response
>>
>>28602924
Most posters here are retarded and don't know anything about cars. They will seriously tell you some 80s shit box has better throttle response than a modern sports car because cables
>>
>>28602248
Tech bros yet again reinventing the simplest of machines. Why do you need anything more than press pedal pull wire open valve?

Holy shit the absolute cope. You own appliances, not cars.
>>
everything digital has lag vs analog. I have some tuning done to my car that has dbw throttle. Its alot better than factory but still doesnt respond as well as cable would. there are time when im at like 3/4 throttle, let off to shift and the revs climb 500 rpm.
>>
>>28599754
Linear throttle is pretty nice
