amphibious vehicle edition

let's start the thread with a question: how the fuck do I use Subaru Starlink?
>>
is Subaru dying worldwide? Holy shit, no one talks about it outside their forums.
>>
>>28601414
As a Subaru tragic I can honestly say they currently make nothing that excites me, like not at all. Except maybe their kei van.

Well for starters all of their current cars are dumb SUVs. Not exactly the vehicle type enthusiasts go for.

I love my 20 year old Subaru sedan tho
>>
>>28601414
It's THE brand for fat lesbian and effeminate men. Sadly it's not going anywhere when their ad focus is about your half breed goblina not getting a post term abortion in a wreck.
>>
>>28601487
This shit was in the 90s. Did this really kill the brand?
>>
>>28601499
i saw a fat ugly lesbian on the phone with the hood open on her 2007~ or so outback in a gas station like 2 months ago, the stereotype is still real
>>
>>28601499
No, it gave them a reliable customer base ever since. It was a 10/10 business move and anyone that says otherwise is retarded as hell.
>>
>>28601552
This. But it's dead to us. All we care about is old wrx/stis or maybe the brz if for some reason you want the gay 86

For how long can I drive my subie on a single 255/60R17 on the front, with the rest being 255/55R17? I'll get my original tire in a few hours but before that I'll have to do some shit and drive 15 miles.
>>
>>28601898
Enjoy ruining your differential, retard
>>
>>28601918
It'll be fine if he's just driving softly for 15 miles or so, retard. Consider that their spares aren't full sized even on the ones with 3 lsds.
See, anyone can call anyone a retard.
>>
>>28601414
I see a lot of Crosstreks and Foresters.
>>
>>28601414
>is Subaru dying worldwide?
I hope so. Their entire lineup is drop dead ugly and sucks.

For those who have owned a Subaru in the past, would you get another one? I wanted a WRX for over decade but it wasn't until 2019 that the time was right. That one blew its engine around 5,000 miles despite being stock. The dealer bought it back and gave me a discount on a 2020 but now I had trust issues. I sold it in 2023 after driving it only 10k miles. As is, Subaru is dead to me. 38k starting for a WRX is retarded.
Maybe if I had got an STi instead I'd feel different.

Doing the clutch on my sti
What a fucking nightmare
>>
>>28602270
I've had a non-turbo and an STi a combined 11-12 years. The only issues I've had were from the previous owner of the non-turbo I bought at over 100k miles. I'd get one again if they made them like they did in the '00s, but the newer ones other than the brz don't excite me at all.
>>
>>28601414
I like Subies, but everyone wants hybrids now. Subaru are late to the party. And the Forester redesign is AWFUL.
>>
>>28602270
I have a 2018 outback and it’s been a great car. No issues whatsoever and ridiculously practical and comfortable. Would do it again in a heartbeat. Sad that the outback is officially dead for the 2026 model year.
>>
>>28602251
Owned a 98 RS for a year and that was enough Subaruing for me.
>>
>>28601414
They're gone the gay. Everything is ugly and slow. Excessively underpowered engines so they don't blow up their boxer engines or CVTs. They're riding entirely off their reputation for being good cars for snowy areas and adventure larpers. Wait until normies find out other cars offer AWD...
>>
>>28602502
Other cars are not full time AWD though. Driving 90/10 99% of the time except for when the computer detects a slip and routes more power to the rear for a moment is not real AWD.
>>
>>28601414
>kill the STI
>die
many such cases. never kill your most beloved enthusiast model and never stop competing in GT3 racing and rallying

>would you get another one?
waiting for pic rel to be delivered
>That one blew its engine around 5,000 miles despite being stock
did you have it new? you might be surprised how many people can't drive a turbo manual properly and end up lugging the engine, stressing components to the point where folding a rob is inevitable
>Maybe if I had got an STi instead I'd feel different
EJs are objectively worse than FAs
>>
>>28602583
Why the fuck did they ruin the outback by making it an SUV? They already have the forester which they’ve turned into an explorer knockoff. What’s the point of two compact SUVs? It’s like they’re purposely trying to kill off all of their differentiators; the outback was the last non-luxury wagon you could buy in America.
>>
>>28602611
Yeah I bought both that 2019 and 2020 new. The 2019 had 6 miles on it and the 2020 had 8.
The 2019 had 2 oil changes at the dealer and I always let it warm up and cool down. The problem wasn't maintenance related. The FA20 is an interference engine and somehow the timing chain skipped.

The quality of the EJ really depends on year and the final years were great engines IF properly maintained and you do the correct mods, namely the cylinder 4 cooling mod, AOS and frequent oil changes.

I know any manufacturer can make a lemon but it really hurt me when the car I wanted for so long failed within a year.

I'll say that FA24 > properly modded EJ > FA20 > EJ. Still upset we didn't get the EJ207 in the US
>>
did they ever put the H6 in anything with a manual? I really like the 5th gen outback, but it only came with a CVT when CVTs were all trash
>>
How scared of a '05 Forester with 184k miles should I be? It's such a good deal, but only if the HG doesn't blow anytime soon.
>>
>>28602654
They did put it in at least one generation of Legacy with a 6 speed manual. IIRC what I usually hear is that the top gear or two are longer than in the STI but it is otherwise the same box. That said I don't know what sort of centre diff it had.
>>
i kinda wanna get a cheaper forester (2008ish), but knowing that head gasket failure is guaranteed and there's no permanent fix is a bummer.
>>
>>28602650
So do you know how to drive a turbo AWD Subaru properly without lugging the engine?
>>
>>28602678
Don't buy a used Subaru unless you've accepted you may need to put a new engine in

>>28602766
>no permanent fix is a bummer
Um, you use the thicker steel head gaskets they switched back to using.
>>
>>28602766

Yes. It's not very happy below 2000 RPM and offers little power above 5700rpm.
Accelerating on the highway would mean dropping from 5th or 6th down to 4th even for an extra 5mph. 6th offers no acceleration at all.

One of the roads I would often be on is 60mph up a steep hill. That's right at the top of 3rd's sweet spot and the bottom of 4th's. Depending on traffic I would bounce back and forth between the 2. I'd usually shift around 4200 and keep it just below 3000 in regular driving.

The timing issue happened while I was idle in traffic.

My 2nd WRX never had major issues but on 2 separate occasions it cut all throttle input while I was trying to merge onto the highway. I was watching to boost gauge build like normal then I hear the wastegate (no blow-off valve) and I got no boost and the gas pedal isn't doing anything. After I let off the gas for a few seconds and tried again I had power. That's not something I want to experience for a 3rd time, I was lucky there wasn't any traffic near me when it happened.

I get a feeling so complicated thinking back on my time with my Subi
>>
>>28602270
I recently just did that. Had a 2005 outback xt. Sold it because they're loaded with footguns. Bought a 2008 outback xt because there is slightly less footguns and it was a killer deal. There isn't anything in the current lineup I'd buy despite having more reliable engines now. I think Subaru peaked in 2005-09 when there were turbo manual offerings in basically everything while still being sub 4000 pound cars.
>>28602583
This looks like a chinese car lmao
>>28602587
I never knew if I liked the facelift of this better or not. They are heavier than pre facelift, but can handle hail damage better.
>>28602678
>>28602766
I probably wouldn't buy an NA from that generation: too many unknowns (did the owner replace the HG, did they replace them with correct HG, etc). The turbos aren't much better: the 2005-06 (?) I think still had cats in the up pipes that blew up engines. The rest still had oiling issues due to subaru's 200 IQ move of putting screens in all banjo bolts and brazing oil pickups

>>
I have a 2007 Outback that idles low and sometimes stalls. What are the potential causes of this? Context: the guy I bought it from had the entire engine replaced 40k miles ago.
>>
I have a 2019 wrx and it's ok. I got it for $25k used with very low miles and the STI for similar mileage just didn't seem worth an extra $10-15k. Plus I've gotten enough speeding tickets to know I don't need it to be any faster than it already is.
I'm not a fucking automotive engineer like everyone else with a wrx apparently, so if the engine starts having major issues without me beating the fuck out of it I'll just trade it in for something else.
Would I get another one? probably. The VB is growing on me and if they do another gas engine generation with an STI I'd have to think long and hard about getting the very likely final edition of this car.

I have an 03 forester and love it and the insane amount of rust it has on my basically non existent control arms. 184k and still runs like a raped ape, pic related was in Bama last winter, only wish it had a 6th gear cause 65mph at 3k isn't fun
>>
>>28602654
I don't think they ever did in the USA. Which is why you have to deal with CELs or go standalone for the swap.
>>
>>28610899
For the EZ engines*, you can manual swap an EG33 with no CEL.
>>
>>28602270
I own two bugeyes and decided to get a VB WRX since they offered me 0% APR on the loan. At first I hated it but it's slowly winning me over after I removed all the soft ass mounts on the driveline. Currently motors are very easy to source and cheap (2k or less if you buy an ascent motor) and there's an open source tuning project that supports the tactrix cable so I don't have to give the Cobb jews any money for wanting an intake on my car.
